Carlos Gimenez Has Been a Horrible Miami-Dade Mayor

Luther Campbell, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke assesses his old campaign foe's sorry job performance.

During almost ten months in office, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez has done a good job of dressing up his achievements. He's made people believe he is following through on campaign promises. But Gimenez hasn't done anything to prove he's a reformer. In fact, it's business as usual at County Hall.

The former fire chief has become a full-blown politician. He's interested only in raising money for re-election, protecting bureaucrats who make more than $100,000 a year, and getting rid of low-salary, rank-and-file employees who can least afford to lose their jobs.

He's a BS artist, and everybody who voted for him fell for his act. On the campaign trail, Gimenez boasted he would reduce the number of county departments from 60 to 25 and get rid of some of the bureaucratic dead wood. It seemed he followed through. But what he hasn't explained publicly, at least so far, is that when he cut the number of departments, he didn't get rid of any directors who earn six-figure salaries. He just shuffled job titles.

Sure, he cut his own salary in half, but then he awarded five new deputy mayors with annual salaries of more than $200,000. Meanwhile, he's done a great job of threatening to lay off cops and has forced the police department to operate on a shoestring budget. That will make it tougher to catch dangerous criminals such as the thugs who shot up a funeral home near North Miami on March 31, killing two people and injuring 14.

Gimenez has also been wishy-washy about allowing development closer to the Everglades. He squashed Florida International University's proposal to move the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo to a site past the Urban Development Boundary, but he didn't do anything to stop the County Commission from approving Homestead-Miami Speedway's expansion into sensitive wetlands. He was also silent when commissioners approved a rock-mining operation on agricultural land that's within 100 feet of Everglades National Park.

I guess Gimenez has been busy collecting $1.6 million in contributions for his re-election campaign and pandering to Cuban-American voters about Miami Marlins skipper Ozzie Guillen. He hasn't had time to actually lead.

When a political figure favors money over the people it's left to the people to stand up and call for a change.

Is it just me, or have you noticed that, whenever and wherever there is cuban or a cuban decendent involved in the politycal arena, public organization (i.e. police dept), citiy management, etc, at least in south florida, there is always problems, some level of corruption, double standards, or something ....is it an inherited behavior ? a cuban lifestyle thing ? or what ?

Listen Luke, I'm just getting over the asshole you supported in the last election. How about you stay out of this one. Maybe MD mayor race is just not your thing! Do yourself a favor and just stay off of the subject.

"That will make it tougher to catch dangerous criminals such as the thugs who shot up a funeral home near North Miami on March 31, killing two people and injuring 14." Enough of these and the problem solves itself. Obviously the drive by was directed at those that did someone else wrong. Was it a pre-emptive or retaliatory strike. Does it really matter ? If you aren't involved in their problems, just stay away from these people and the funeral home or their church. Just that simple, thugs don't go after law abiding citizens in this manner, there is  more to that story than what anyone got as a story and reason.

Gimenez is so proud of whacking benefits for his senior staff that he can hardly contain his glee. I am sure his money-bundlers are waiting and watching for these career administrators to exit the building, so they can install dupes and morons who will do their bidding.

Gimenez is jeopardizing our county as he chokes the life out of our metropolitan government. The reorganization has only delayed the decision-making at County Hall.  It now takes more people to sign off on routine matters and causes the wheels of government to grind slower. He is only stacking the bureaucratic boxes.  Who thinks Osterholdt is capable of doing the work of eight directors, while he sleeps through meetings and brags about doing nothing but "managing his inbox" until the election is over?

For people that want to see this metropolitan government sink into the swamp and disappear, Gimenez is your man. Others who want to see their children have a future in this community and enjoy the amenities, you better start searching for another candidate who has a vision, not just a desperate focus on being elected.

why does it matter that he's not a liberal?  What ruinous liberal agenda did this county's last liberal mayor unleash upon us?

Yea he is bad but he could easily be much worse.  He could be even more of a Tax and Spend Liberal who would give away the money from the productive to special interest groups and strangle us with even more regulation and crony socialism.

If you were mayor it would be county subsidized steroids for everyone and free gym memberships.  Food stamps would only be good for egg whites, chicken, sweet potatoes, brown rice, and protein shakes.

I have never done steroids in my life. I overcame being hospitalized for 9 weeks due to a hit and run accident naturally. Looking at most Americans, it would probably make sense to subsidize gym memberships at $30.00 a month per person as opposed to paying billions for diabetes and other ailments due to people being fat. On the other hand, that would require effort from people. Judging by your remark, you probably have never seen the inside of a gym. Post a picture.
