Isiah Thomas has been fired from his job as head basketball coach at Florida International University, according to a statement released by the school. The former NBA star and New York Knicks coach brought big hopes with him to the campus but failed to deliver.

Here's the school's complete statement:
FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia announced today that Isiah Thomas has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the FIU men's basketball program.

"We want to thank Isiah Thomas for his three years here at FIU," Garcia said. "However, we have decided to take the program in a different direction."

A national search for the Panthers' next head basketball coach will begin immediately.
Worth noting: New Times was never quite impressed with FIU's hiring. On his initial hiring we declared him the "Worst Coach/GM/Human Being in NBA History" right there in the headline.

A 2010 feature story recapped his struggles to reshape the team in his first season.

Thomas' reign at FIU was woefully unimpressive. He went 26-65 in his three seasons, and never won more than 11 games in a single season. This season the team posted an 8-21 record, and finished last in the Sun Belt Conference's East division. The program actually declined during Thomas' tenure. They went 13-20 under then-coach Sergio Rouco in the year before Thomas took to the reigns.

The headline reads "Isiah Fired By FIU" It should read, "Isiah Fired Because He Can't Coach"

So how much more is this going to raise tuition?

You know .... new coaches are expensive, and they need a contract so when they stink at the job, you can pay them millions.

I guess college is more about smoking pot, and running around a $300,000,000 building - verses actually learning useful skills and intelligence.

Whatever, you people deserve your fate, and your four year degree is "social justice."

Isiah was  the best shooting guard I ever saw play the game in his Detroit Pistons career.  It disappoints me to see him struggle in his post playing ball career. He was a great guy here in Michigan.

Just because the man is black does not mean he will make a good basketball coach.. Great another brother on EBT debit card

What took them so long?

NO, you got that wrong. He was hired because he was black. He and Majic Johnson are both lousy coaches.

Basketball, even in college, is a Business. No matter how much we loved Isiah in Michigan he has had a hard time getting started in his post playing career. I wish we could make him some kind of a coach or scout in Detroit Pistons team scheme so he could get his feet on the ground and get started again in his post play career somehow.

No one wants to come to Detroit. It is a warzone. The dems here did a fantastic job of running it into the ground.
