Marco Rubio Hates Disco Music, Says Civil Rights Movement Was Part of "A Scary Time"

Marco Rubio has some interesting taste in music. He loves Nicki Minaj, but apparently hates disco. He attacked the dance genre at a Lincoln Day Dinner in Pinellas, Florida, over the weekend and hurled an insult to the Bee Gees in a bizarre, fear-mongering speech filled with spooky stories, bad jokes, and a bit of weird phrasing about the civil rights movement.

Rubio was running down all the things Americans have ever had to fear decade by decade, because that's what we really want out of politicians isn't it? Someone who reminds us what we should be afraid of.

According to Rubio, the civil rights movement was one of the scary threats that "challenged us" in the '60s. We're pretty sure he didn't mean it to come off that way, but, yeah, listing "civil rights" in a speech of "scary" things is a bit troubling.

Then came the '70s.

"The 70's were a very frighting time ...most troubling of all we had to overcome disco, and bell bottoms, and the Bee Gees," Rubio said.

Apparently attacking the Bee Gees was a line too far for someone in the audience who bellowed, "Woah, don't go there."

"All right, I went to far. I apologize," said Rubio.

Obviously, attacking straight white rich men at a Republican function crosses the line.

Jumping on the hate of disco music, a backlash historically informed by racism and homophobia, that's OK, though. Just don't attack the white guys who made a hell of a lot of money off it.

In closing, we leave you with the gayest, blackest disco song of all time: Sylvester's "You Make me Feel." If you don't dance, well, you probably voted for Rubio.

The growth of Stewart Airport creates new jobs for area residents, brings new business and new travelers to the region, and brings new convenient travel options to those of us living in the Hudson Valley.

The Bees Gees are in the Song Writers Hall of Fame and Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame sold 100 million CDS its easy to target them but considering one is dead, the other is fight colon and liver cancer its rather tasteless and shows Marc Rubio isn't terribly smart there are more Bee Gees fans than Nicki Manaj fans.  Time for him to go back to local politics just not Miami that where Barry Gibb lives.

Well considering Barry gibb lives in north Miami and is a functioning member of society it's more than insulting disco its insulting a person who lives in the community. And for a politician rather poor choice of topics

I'm a liberal who loves civil rights and hates Rubio, but that doesn't mean that disco didn't suck.  You don't have to be a racist or a homophobe to  hate the BeeGees, you had to have ears.

it time to recall this clown

Before the March 2000 session, Rubio was hardly the scorching conservative who would later woo Tea Partiers nationwide. He said he'd focus on supporting early education and community policing. And he wasn't particularly passionate about cutting spending. In his first three years, he supported adding a $4 surcharge to cruise tickets to fund a Marlins stadium and a $1.2 million earmark to build new bike paths in his district

the disco comment is ridiculous by Rubio.  he knows nothing of it not cause he hasn't heard it but because he too young to have gone to clubs in that time and enjoyed the experience. when before or since have nightclubs been so much fun ?  never !!  folks loved to dance to it and there were/ are some very good disco songs.  he is a clown politician - another in Miami's long line of them.  my experience has been that most folks who don't like disco just can't dance and because they can't they hate it.  i said most not all - OK haters ?
