Forget Lennox in Belfast: 83 "Suspected" Pit Bulls Have Been Euthanized In Miami This Year

Animal lovers across the globe united in outrage over the plight of Lennox, a dog euthanized in Belfast, Ireland, on Wednesday. Lennox was killed by authorities for being a dangerous "pit bull-type," despite his owners' pleas that he had never attacked anybody, and wasn't even a pit bull mix.

There's nothing wrong with a righteous cause célèbre, but it should be noted that there are plenty of Lennoxes in our very backyard -- hundreds of them. According to statistics obtained by Riptide, in 2012 Miami-Dade Animal Services has confiscated 181 dogs because they were suspected pit bulls, and euthanized 83 of them.

That's more than a dozen dogs killed a month since January. Pit bulls -- or any dogs suspected of being them, since there's no way to scientifically determine their breed -- have been banned in this county for more than two decades.

"Sometimes one incident gets worldwide attention," says activist Dahlia Canes, who's led a years-long quest to overturn the ban, of Lennox. "It positive for us because it's brought attention to the horrors of breed specific legislation."

The ban on pit bulls in Miami-Dade County, instituted in response to a 1989 dog attack, has been debunked as misguided, imprecise and expensive. The state of Florida has prohibited breed-specific laws, but Miami-Dade's ban is a grandfathered-in barnacle.

In February, a bill that would have overturned the ban-- and had the vocal support of newly-signed Miami Marlins pitcher, and pit bull owner, Mark Buerhle-- was thwarted by Miami-Dade commissioners who wanted the issue put on a local ballot instead.

Animal lovers across the globe were helpless to save Lennox. But Miami-Dade County voters will have their chance to overturn our local ban-- and save thousands of dogs in the process-- in just over a month. The vote takes place on August 14.

"This is such a simple situation that should have been fixed a while back," says Canes. "It's euthanizing dogs based solely on what they look like. It's canine genocide."

What a truly ugly Headline. What in hells name were you thinking.. I am a friend of the Barnes family and also admin on The Lennox Campaign & this has to rank up there with the most insensitive articles I have come across. Those of us who worked our collective asses off emailing media, government and anyone else we could think of also did the same for all dogs seized. 99% of us are Bull Breed owners. Your article is pathetic sensationalism and wont work. Lennox Legacy will carry on and make BSL & Dangerous Dogs Act a thing of past in UK

Did you people even read the article? Or just completely misread the headline as an insult and started typing fucking essays. It's a figure of speech, maybe it sounds bad, but lets focus the hate on the people killing the dogs not someone bringing it to the public eye.

They have been given a bad wrap! Any dog that is taught to be aggressive is aggressive! No dog is truly safe if taught to be mean. Why do people keep insisting that Pitbulls are all aggressive? They are not aggressive by any means. Lift the ban Dade County! Let our loved ones live free in peace and stop the senseless killing of loving dogs!!!!!

The article itself is true, however it is quite offensive to all of the people who tried for 2 long years to save this magnificent animal.  He was truly a family member and pet of a little girl.  To ask us to totally disregard Lennox' death is equal to telling us to forget we have lost a loved one.  We are ALL on the same side here, so let's act like it.  You owe the "Lennox family" an apology.

I agree somewot with wot ye have said, and I plus many others feel he had been euthanized way before he was supposely put to sleep this past Tuesday, the latest photos of Lennox shows he had sore/wounds on both of his sides, his tail was 1/2 the length it should have been he was skinny, that dog was brutalized and I think they abuse him purposely to make him aggressive on purpose,Lightfoot committed perjury in court when she said she was terrified of him but the video they tried to keep hidden from the public says differently, they used Lennox as an example because they were pissed off that Bruce and Patrick were not put down.

Ms. Diaz, you should keep your trap shut regarding things you obviously know nothing about....such as Pit Bulls.  If you cannot keep yourself better informed and better educated (that goes for your grammar and spelling too) on issues, crawl back in that hole you came from.  We have enough idiots and ignorance (notice spelling) to go around without the likes of you.  I think we should make it legal to euthanize STUPID PEOPLE.  Well, does that work for you Ms. Diaz?

No dog should ever be judged by his look - people must change their point of view. No dog is born bad - it is always the other end of the rope!!!! BSL has to end - keep on fighting for that!

Folks, please advertise this upcoming vote on the "I Am Lennox" facebook page.  Lennox' death can be a catalyst for revoking BSL around the world. Starting with Dade county!

Your headline could be a little softer on the hearts that have been broken over Lennox, however, I do agree the way the public has not idolized Lennox is too much. UK's Dangerous Dog Act has been in effected for over 21 years. There were other cases of 'Pit Bull' dogs needing this much attention. Example - Bruce. He was a dog like Lennox, taking away from his family. There were petitions and postings of him. Then everything stopped. What was his outcome, was he saved by an alien abduction? Had the public reacted to Bruce and the many others that followed, Lennox could have had a better chance of survival. Instead his popularity spread like wild fire in the 4 months prior. That is when the majority of his fan club developed. Fighting BSL is neither a here or there fight. We have to support each other in the battle to overcome draconian laws. If improvements can be made here in the states/cities, then other countries could use them as examples to follow and the same goes in reverse. If other countries are publishing reports of negativity, our government officials are going to use them against us.

Catchy title! The way pitties are perceived is heartbreaking to me! Many shelters do not even try to adopt out pit bulls that come in — they are just euthanized! But please do not "forget Lennox"! He has become the poster boy to end breed specific legislation (BSL) which will help pitties everywhere!

No, I will not forget Lennox and no one should.  This was an international effort and really did not make ANY news until he was put down. Yes, I'm aware of what's going on in our own country, and I am have NEVER believed it was a solution.  Petitions are flowing in from people and cities all over the country because of Lennox.  I have been signing petitions before I even new about Lennox, so Lennox just put a face on what's wrong with BSL.  I just think the wording "Forget Lennox" is not appropriate for the battle we are all trying to fight.

It's not 100%, but there is a scientific way to determine a dog's breed/mix.  It's called DNA testing - my vet does it, and there are kits you can buy to do it yourself. That said, I agree with Dogeatdog - don't blame the dog, blame the people that raised them that way.
