Alleged Gang War Has Liberty City Under Deadly Siege

crimescene.jpg
This afternoon, Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones and Miami New Times columnist Luther Campbell are meeting with Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa to ask him what he is doing to address a violent gang war that has enveloped Liberty City over the past three months. "We're going to ask him what the hell is going on," Campbell says. "The violence has gotten out of control."

Police spokesman Napier Velazquez confirmed the sit-down.

On Monday night, Miami Police were searching for an SUV involved in a fatal shooting of a person in the 1000 block of NW 55th Street, not too far from Spence-Jones's home. She could not be reached for comment. Miami police have also not released the victim's name. Then, at 3:30 a.m. today, unknown suspects in a silver Toyota RAV4 rolled up on two men and shot them adjacent to a home at 132 NE 64th St., where Miami-Dade detectives were serving a warrant in an unrelated case. The cops fired at the SUV, but it sped away.

In the June 6 edition of the Miami Times, Miami police homicide detective Sgt. Ervens Ford told the black-owned newspaper that Liberty City could be in for "one of the bloodiest summers on record." In the article, Ford said a string of undocumented murders at the Liberty Square projects, the 753-unit public housing apartment complex commonly known as Pork & Beans, are the result of "feuds between young men who associate themselves with gangs." Ford did not disclose the names of the gangs, but he claimed there is an all-out campaign to force young men in Liberty City to join one side or the other. "The potential for significant and constant bloodshed is sure to rise," Ford told the Miami Times.

Unfortunately, the turf war has claimed several innocent bystanders. On May 31, 28-year-old Jerod Givens was shot multiple times. According to Ford's account in the Miami Times, Givens was not a gang member. He in fact had a criminal record, including a string of felony arrests between 2003 and 2006 for resisting arrest with violence, armed robbery, and intent to sell cocaine. But Ford told the Miami Times that Givens had turned his life around. The victim had recently landed a job at Marlins Park, and he would walk his boys to school from their Liberty Square apartment every school day.

A month later, on June 27, another shooting, at 6900 NW 15th Ave., claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy and Greyston Garcia, a Miami man who had beaten a murder charge under Florida's controversial self-defense law. Garcia had taken a job as a cashier at an all-night convenience store in Liberty City. While on his way back to the store after getting change at a nearby gas station, Garcia was hit by an errant bullet from a firefight.

Campbell tells Riptide that a volunteer coach with the Liberty City Optimist Club was also caught in a hail of bullets meant for someone else. He declined to name the victim. "The shooters killed the guy they were aiming for, but the coach got caught in the line of fire," Campbell says. "He's lucky to be alive."

Where is Jesse Jackson where is Al sharpton ! Nobody cares about blacks killing each other its in their nature its normal  ! This happens everyday in every black ghetto in america or any place close  to a MLK street. But when a white man kills a black thug in self defense everybody is ready to march and protest.    Black people are so fucking ignorant it just makes me laugh.Al sharpton pimps you niggers with your ignorance you are all his bitches...HAHAHA

Wow, you people think that everyone in the ghetto wants to be there. They don't. They don't have the money or the means to live anywhere else. For every one idiot with a gun in the hood, go 5 innocent people trying to scratch out a living as best they can. There for but the grace of this universe go all of us. But of course, why do I even bother anymore, when the revolution comes, and it will, most of the dumb and angry will die simply because they have prejudged the very brothers that can help them fight the real enemy. Our problem with race is so narrow minded, when we are all of the human one.

Most of the problems in Liberty City over the past 5-6 years are due to Spence-Jones being a stupid and corrupt commissioner.   Smart people would be demanding that the Police hunt down and take the criminals off the street.  Since Spence is a dummy she doesn't want any blacks arrested...

Why dont they ask the former Gang personnel why  they were transferred and the  Gang Unit  cut in half.  I will tell you why, The current Chief said that the City doesnt have a gang problem and caved in to Spence Jones pressure to dismantle these types of tactical units.

Who gives a shite, if the cops go in and start busting some heads then these two are going to turn around and claim police brutality, you just can't win with some people.  Change needs to come from within this community, until they decide that they are tire of living like animals nothing is going to change.

Ex-TRU officer
Ex-TRU officer

you are 100000% correct. I was one of those officers removed from the downsized tactical units. even with the city screwing us with our pay I was happy to come to work every day. Why, because I was doing exactly what I became a cop for...to find and arrest the armed robbers, the murders.....the real criminals. and when I wasn't "hunting" them down our unit was stopping countless crimes from being commited. what do I do now? I sit in my uniform in a marked car and wait for the next report call to answer, nothing more nothing less. I write reports and only respond to crimes AFTER they are commited. the mayor, the commisioners and the chief Orosa have broken this department. removing me from the tactical unit was the straw that broke the camel's back and I refuse to do anything more than what I am required to do. I literally risked my life every day and was happy to do it, for what? so I could be told "you did a great job, but sorry your going back to patrol" I don't think Chief Exposito did everything right but he sure as hell had the right ideas and was working to make the department and the city a great place. It's a shame what the corrupt politics did to Miami and the citizens who have to work and live there.

To Luke: Instead of writing your usual bullshit articles, you should be out there preaching to the black community to take a stand against violence. They were all quick to go out and make noise when Trayvon was shot, but not one fuck is given about day to day murders and violence. Don't blame Orosa. Stopping violence starts with getting the community involved in policing themselves.

your right i see them sitting on the same corner for hours. the only action i saw this week was a metro dade cop jump out on a guy in a car. al the while the city of miami cops were just sitting around. "Let them hunt" for sure makes it more intresting around the hood.

Here here that's the truth . Now because it happens next to the commissioners house she really cares . The police can't do anything execpt get there after the fact and hope and no one else gets killed. This is nothing new for that community unfortunately . The real problem lies in that people don't talk "snitch" on the killers but thencome on tv crying when it's one of there own . It's time for this community to come together and denounce this activity already

Gotta love liberty city. They screamed when exposito used force to quell the violence and now they want to blame oroso for not doing enough. Campbell and spence-jones are using the media to deflect the blame that rest clearly on their and the residents shoulders. Don't snitch! Assholes.
