Norman Braman Is A Phony

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke goes after the County Commission's biggest enemy.

Car magnate, activist, and billionaire Norman Braman has everyone fooled. He's not really interested in reforming Miami-Dade County government. This is all part of a grand scheme to build his brand by promoting his name as a concerned civic leader. He's a phony. But what do you expect from a car salesman? They'll say anything to get you to buy a car off the lot.

It's a helluva marketing scheme. He is getting free advertising in the Miami Herald and on local TV stations. Every other day, there's a new Braman headline. He's just keeping his name out there to sell more Bentleys, Cadillacs, and BMWs. Heck, he recently opened a Kia dealership, so he needs more middle-class customers.

Everybody praised him for suing the Marlins and Miami-Dade County to stop the baseball stadium, but when he was owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, Braman wanted the city of Brotherly Love to give him free land so he could build a stadium for his football team. He's a hypocrite.

His campaign is for his own self-interest. The proof is in the crackpots and nobodies he's supporting against the African-American county commissioners in the August 14 primary. Braman is not interested in recruiting the best candidates. If that were the case, he would have found some of the brightest young minds to run for office. He couldn't get his reform package that included eliminating three of the black county commission seats, so now he wants to control the commissioners instead.

He's backing Alison Austin, the chief executive of TACOLCY, a nonprofit Liberty City group, to face off against Audrey Edmonson. Austin is a nice lady, but she couldn't even beat Rev. Richard Dunn II for Miami commissioner. Almost no one in Liberty City knows her.

In South Miami-Dade, Braman is supporting a Tea Party radical, Dade County Farm Bureau president Alice Peña, against Dennis Moss. This lady is far to the right; she wants county government to get rid of the department that handles environmental protection. Braman is also backing former Miami Gardens mayor Shirley Gibson, who won the endorsement of anti-gay group the Christian Family Coalition, versus Barbara Jordan.

Braman is taking a page out of mega-lobbyist Ronald Book's playbook. He wants to control the black commissioners and at the same time get people to say, "I like what Braman is doing in politics -- let me go buy a new car from him."

But his plan will backfire in the black community. African-American voters are not stupid. They won't vote for Braman's puppets. And they certainly won't buy a car from one of his dealerships.

You will find Norman Braman at the center of the group called No Casinos whose mission is to squelch any competition for the tourist and gambling dollars currently monopolized by the No Casinos group:  Disney, Micky Arison, the Seminoles and the racetrack owners.  They have employed underhanded tactics including paying off the Dade Heritage Trust to create a phony petition to preserve the old Miami Herald building in order to prevent the development of a world class casino on the site.  Braman is a bully in the guise of a civic minded leader.

We simply need brand new faces on the Metro Commission. That includes the mayor. Unfortunately, we are stuck with half of the commissioners due to the staggered two year voting cycle.

We have two county swimming pools under construction for over  4 years.

We have crumbling sewer lines and the mayor and commission again, raid the Water & Sewer money for 25 million and call it a loan.

Millions of partially treated sewage water is dumped into the ocean daily.

The 25 million dollar raid to pay over 3,000 county staffers over $100,000 plus annually is enough reason to seek new faces. We may get something worse, but it is worth the effort.

I'll be around. Where there's a rich white guy in need of another tax break, I'll be there. Wherever there's a brain dead woman in need of expensive life support her husband doesn't want, I'll be there. Wherever there's a country that needs invading for reasons that don't quite pan out, I'll be there.

Well said, Luther.  Candidates are signing a Braman pledge to qualify for this car salesman's pocket change.  Why should the minority community accept anyone who is willing to sign a pledge to a Republican billionaire?  All the Republicans like to sign pledges to Grover Norquist, and then they fail to do what is required of them as representatives of the people - because Grover would be mad.  Now we have Braman playing the same game.  He wants all these commissioners to call and see if it is OK to impose taxes to pay for services.  Why should this old white billionaire get to dictate what our commissioners do?  This is insane.

Luke, I think you're an idiot, but I was totally in agreement with this article until you went full Luke-tard and went on your racial tirade.

it is mind boggling to me how much of an IDIOT you are. kirkslade has it right.. you want to play into stereotypes being true regarding what can you expect from a car salesman? how about we ask what should we expect from someone like YOU--- precisely just the articles you write.

What do you expect from a car salesman? What should I expect from a rapper? African Americans are not stupid? Highest drop out rate. Highest teen pregnancy. Highest homicide rate. Highest unemployment rate. In addition, these people voted for you, a rapper with no political experience. Sounds kind of stupid to me.

Luke, I met Alice Pena yesterday for the first time at Pastor Robinson's chuch in West Perrine. This a black church sir and the blacks have been neglected, abandoned and discarded. Pastor Robinson shared with a group of us how Dennis Moss has done NOTHING to help the community. Why would Pastor Robinson lie? Moss erected a statue of himself in the area and built a community pool (that took 4 years to build, at a cost of over $4 Million)....this has not helped black men and women get jobs, nor did it provide education/job training opportunities. We need REAL people. I don't know Ms. Pena from Adam, but its clear to everyone who lives in the West Perrine community that Moss doesn't care about anything other than his pocketbook. And Ms. Pena seemed intelligent and in tune with the needs of the community. In addition she espouses traditional values...Moss has been in office for nearly 20 YEARS.....do you agree with that???

@FernStyle Ask Moss why the Goulds Park swimming pool is in the 4th year of construction and watch him dance around that issue.

And there is another such pool in the other end of the county, under construction.
