Bicyclist Hit on Rickenbacker Causeway in Critical Condition

cyclsisthitloc.jpg
A cyclist was hit on the Rickenbacker Causeway and remains in the hospital in critical condition. The incident occurred yesterday near the Rusty Pelican restaurant.

The Miami Herald reports that a BMW hit the cyclist, but Local 10 has pictures of a dark-green Jeep SUV with a dented windshield that was involved in the crash. The incident was not a hit-and-run.

Police have not released the male victim's identity.

The man suffered a head injury and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

No charges have yet been filed.

The accident is just the latest involving a cyclist and a car to occur on the causeway that connects Key Biscayne to mainland Miami.

In February, 36-year-old Aaron Cohen ;died after being the victim of a hit-and-run. Police arrested the driver, Michele Traverso

In December 2010, cyclist Christophe LeCanne was killed after he was hit by a car driven by aspiring singer Carlos Bertonatti. The driver was drunk at the time and drove off after hitting the cyclist.

Lets see Mary......How much money is generated in the parking meters in Miami? That alone could feed everyone in Africa twice.

There needs to be an advocacy nonprofit group with strong lobbying power......and dollars.

There is not a safe route to get from the beach to the mainland. There is not a safe place to ride ANYWHERE in Dade or Broward. I'd love to see a bike lane that is separated from the traffic on ALL the causeways. Who we call to lobby this? Huh? Who? Tell me now and I will start calling!

Time to change it to the Bikerkiller causeway.

if you're to bike ride on any causeWay, except Venetian, is wise to stay on the walkway behind the concrete wall, given the licensed idiots that bolt inbound to the Village. To me, still, there's no safer bike path that Ingraham Highway into Old Cutler Road... have you seen those sidewalks?!?! very ample (but of course, that Gables and they always have their shit together!). Wanna have more safety for cyclists? Wait until a commisioner's relative gets creamed either on Brickell Avenue or said causeway: IT'LL BE DEATH PENALTY, FOR THOSE WHO ATTEMPT ON THE LIVES OF CYCLISTS!!!

To ride your bike on a road anywhere in this country is hazardous when it comes to drivers lack of attention on the road, whether texting or on their cell. Its surprising this does not occur more often

What should be a recreational paradise has the vocabularies of an interstate highway. A shame because it's even nice to drive over at a reasonable speed. But with asshats speeding at 65mph (25mph over the lmit) routinely it makes it a stressful, dangerous trip by car or bike.

You can tell from the pictures of the jeep involved in the accident it was pretty bad. I hope the guy pulls through.

The city has been very irresponsible about making the area more bike friendly. I hope that more of the legal community - fellow lawyers in particular - are more vocal about getting bicycle lanes and improvements to our roads - a top priority.

Too bad. That's a great area for bikers but with two bikers dead from recent accidents, one a hit and run, you won't find me biking on the Rickenbacker Causeway.

William: We'll update when we have more facts. Right now the big issue is that the Rickenbacker continues to have these kind of accidents and the city isn't doing much to remedy.

This explains nothing! How did it happen, who's at fault? How about post when you have more facts!

Thanks for continuing to report on the Rickenbacker crashes. Anxious to know how the rider is doing and what happened.
