IKEA Is Coming to Miami-Dade: Let the Swedish Takeover Commence

No longer will Miamians have to drive to the far western reaches of Broward County to get our fix of cheap Swedish-designed furniture. IKEA is finally coming to Miami-Dade, with plans for a store in Sweetwater, next door to the Dolphin Mall, to open as early as fall 2014.

The Miami Herald says construction on the 417,000-square-foot store could begin as soon as next spring if the plans are approved. The store would be about 40 percent larger than the store in Sunrise, but would sit on a smaller plot of land. So the actual store will be built atop a two-story parking garage. The City of Sweetwater is on board with the idea, and earlier this year rezoned the property.

The construction will bring about 500 new jobs, and the store will employ about 400 when it opens.

IKEA's new location marks the second wave in the long-awaited arrival of affordable Swedish design to the Magic City. Swedish clothing retailer H&M will finally enter the Miami market with two stores, one on Lincoln Road and another in Aventura Mall, expected to open in the coming months. The retailer already has a small pop-up location just north of Lincoln Road while it awaits the renovation of its permanent home in the Lincoln Theatre.

Soon we'll all be listening to music by ABBA and Robyn, and watching Ingmar Bergman films. We're already reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The takeover of Miami-Dade is imminent, and this one-eighth Swede could not be more pleased.
