Chad Johnson's Dismissal Shows The Dolphins Are Football's Most Hypocritical Team

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke criticizes Joe Philbin for letting go of Chad Johnson.

The Miami Dolphins are the most hypocritical football organization to ever be featured on national television. Cutting Chad Johnson, one of the top wide receivers in the NFL, was completely unfair. Before his wife Evelyn Losada accused him of headbutting her, Johnson was one of the few players in the league to never get arrested -- in his entire pro career.

Yes, he's a clown who loves to mug for the cameras, but every NFL team has a jokester. How the heck can head coach Joe Philbin tell Johnson he doesn't fit into the Dolphins program when he condones veterans hazing rookies by shaving their hair to look like penises?

Besides, the Dolphins have a history of keeping players who get in trouble off the football field. In 2010, the team didn't cut; then-defensive linemen Tony McDaniel and Phillip Merling, both of whom had been arrested for domestic battery against their significant others during training camp. Around the same time, running back Ronnie Brown and corner back Will Allen were popped for driving with a DUI.

These incidents all occurred the same year the Dolphins traded for Brandon Marshall, a talented wide receiver who already had four arrests under his belt when he came to Miami; including one for domestic violence. In April 2011, Marshall was involved in another domestic dispute in which his wife stabbed him. He stayed on the Dolphins roster.

The truth is that anyone watching the first two episodes of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins could tell Philbin didn't like Johnson and wanted any reason to let him go. The Dolphins head coach thinks he is still in Wisconsin, where he can act like he's Andy Griffith. But gosh darn it, this is Miami, the flashiest city in America. We love superstars with big personalities. Just look at the Miami Heat.

Philbin should have shown Johnson a little more loyalty, at least for the fan's and players sake. From the time they are playing in the National Youth Football League, players are taught that they play a team sport and that you ride or die with your brothers. But the Dolphins sent a message that we are not our brother's keeper. When it came time for Philbin to support Johnson and show Chad the Dolphins were behind him, the head coach turned on him.

Even some players are openly questioning Philbin's decision. On Sid Rosenberg's show last week, linebacker Karlos Dansby said he hated that the Dolphins didn't stand behind Johnson. If it turns out that Johnson is guilty of headbutting his wife, then he deserves to be punished by the legal system. However, he's innocent until proven guilty.

But since we live in an age where every jerk hosting sports talk shows on television and radio get to act as judge, jury and executioner. That is un-American.

At the end of the day, the Dolphins did something wrong. The franchise's treatment of Chad shows why no signature free agents want to play for Miami. In getting rid of the clown, the Dolphins proved themselves to be a joke. The only way Stephen Ross is going to turn this thing around is by hiring Dan Marino as president of football operations.

He is the only one who can restore credibility to the Dolphins.

The key word is "was" one of the only to not be arrested...whether its right or wrong, it is negative publicity & drama the team chooses to not want to be linked to. I'm sure there are plenty of eager, talented young men who would avoid violence & arrest without any great effort on their part. If I could choose between a model player or a trouble player...the choice would be a no brainer.

What a disgusting rationale for keeping a domestic abuser "because that has been the norm in the past" Are you serious or are you really this thoughtless about a very egregious act? Just because bad behavior has been accepted and tolerated in the past is no justification for expecting wrong doing to be the norm. Firing him is NOT hypocritical-it is being responsible. Its time that these athletes (and all offenders) be held accountable. I stick behind his decision to fire Mr. Johnson. The Coach does not need to "like" him, he just needs to lead with integrity. Let this be a shining example to other Coaches and players-behave or deal with the consequences like the rest of us!

Somebody tell @unclelukereal1 that nobody gives a damn what he thinks about Joe Philbin & the Dolphins. He's as relevant as Vanilla Ice.

Former season ticket holder for 40 years....Was hopeful for Fisher....no hope for Philbin / Ireland.... No Passion..... Why did they even take a chance on Chad? Not the way to build a "team". I would love to interview HR experts on the way he cut Johnson.... very wish-washy. My final comment....DICK Haircut? Can't imagine Shula putting up with the level of immaturity and No Class.... These guys represent each other....each others families....the owners...and the community. No coach with passion would put up with this BS. Philbin doesn't have a clue!

@unclelukereal1 @chochocinco is a clown. Its time for our organization be respected throughout the league and he wasn't a player to help

@BenVolinPBP well at least he didn't call philbin a racist like he did with oleary last year.

Chad wasn't cut solely because of the domestic incident.  He was cut because at this point in his career he is a marginal player.  Marginal players can't afford screwups.  That's just how it is.  Additionally Philbin already had to talk to Chad about his behavior.  He put him on notice that his leash was short.

Hello again, I rec'd a few replies about my posting. Come on guys. Its never ok to be in the company of a lady and she is bleeding from a wound. Its like having the smoking gun in your hands and a body at your feet. Most not all guys do the abusing when it comes to domestic fighting. A man would walk away and never hit a woman no matter what. Just because she has a temper with other women does not mean she hit the guy. Yeah she is loud and rude but it does not justify being hit by a NFL player. Its like having a boxer hit his wife......come on here guys. He was wrong...All guys who mis-treat their women are wrong. If you don't want her move on...Don't marry her...Why do you guys take up for a clown like this. He catches a few passes and i mean a few now and you guys put him on a pedestal...No way..It is sad who we admire and I hope this will open some eyes. Guys love your women and treat them right. Let them know how special they are. If you touch them, let it be to massage them and hold them and comfort them..Not abuse them...thanks and have a great day...K.D in Pasadena.

This reminds me of a famous movie quote from the Nick Nolte movie North Dallas Forty. "Team! this isn't a team. You guys (team owners) are the team, we're just the equipment!" The Dolphins are a classless organization with no loyalty to their players ala Dante Culpepper, Larry Johnson and Jason Taylor even. Member Bill Parcels anyone? They need new management and preferably it's someone who knows a thing or two about football. But until then SUCK IT Dolphin fans!!! Ha! Go Giants!!!

Hello Uncle Luke: You are so so so so off base with your comments. But this is America and anyone who has access to a computer can voice their opinion. This Clown if for the circus not the NFL. You go back to who Miami had and they are trying to change their image now. This is a new coach and he should not have to deal with this stuff. And  you have to balls to say not guilty till proven in court. Man are you crazy. If that was your mom, sister, aunt, daughter or lady friend and she went to the hospital for a head cut would you be saying the same thing. I don't think so. For to long we give these players a free ride and its time to stop and make them accountable. Enough is enough. He got what he deserves and this should be a lesson for everyone. Its a gift that you are selected into the NFL. They get paid a ton of money as all entertainers do. Be humble and thankful and do something positive with it. Chad   is a Jerk and makes men who look like him bad. How can a guy get married and still want to fool around with other women. He did his wife wrong and he should have never got married to her. He asked her to marry him not the other way around. Now he is a sad sad guy with only himself to blame. I don't feel sorry for him. I feel sorry for her and Im glad the coach got rid of him and Im glad all of the people saw it on Hard Knocks. He needs to get on his knees and ask the man above for forgiveness and then apologize again from the heart and do something positive with his life....Thanks for letting me give my 2 cents here. K.D from Pasadena, Ca.

Since when the hell is Johnson one of the top WRs in the NFL?

The hazing of rookies have been going on in the NFL for years. Luke makes it seem like the Phins are the only team to allow it. And those arrest didn't happen under Philbin. New regime. As for no "signature free agents" want to play in Miami. Um..wasn't Dansby the best FA LB when he was a free agent? Um, who did he sign with? Oh yeah that's right. Better question is if this had happened to Brian Hartline and not Chad would Luke be getting his panties in a bunch?

It is NOT a good idea to fire an employee because he gets into an argument with his wife, and she gets a cut on her face. There is no reliable way to know if Chad is guilty of anything, regardless of how the case is decided in court, because Chad's version of what happened is different from Evelyn's, and the judge was not with them at the time.

There is so much talk of freedom in America, but in practical terms, most people have to live tightly constricted lives, subject to the relentless rules (and whims) of employers, legislators, family members and the like.

Only haters can't see that this was a rush to judgement. A guy who one week was the best WR on the team is released not because of this arrest but because he didn't fit. A guy who's never been in trouble with the law is guilty because he is rich? That's not how its done in America.

Pretty funny, comparing the joke of hazing rookies by shaving their heads vs head butting your wife over potential issues of infidelity. Yes, I can see where the spouse abuse is the bigger joke, perhaps even comparably as harmless as shaving another's head ?

Interesting. Just before I saw a clip on NFL network of Johnson getting cut, I saw a commercial featuring the President and some NFL ( and other sport ) stars, talking about how domestic violence against women is not to be tolerated.

Does ' Uncle Luke ' condone turning a blind eye to battery ?

Philbin and co. were not here for all the other offenses you have listed, thus your hypothesis is incongruent with reality.

tremaynewilliams61

Well..the Dolphins loss the philosophy and perspective, when they refused to resign Marino. They haven't done anything right since that time.lol..The curse has been in place since that day. Flashback to now. A football team with receiver based offense, now no leader with playoff experience and a rookie QB. No front office help. I agree with Luke the coach didn't want him and that off the field incident was minor compared to others. This is South Florida and football fan here expected the Dolphins to win, it is well overdue. The Coach has a hard task ahead and having his picks of shade already is a slap in the face too us Diehard fans who expect him to put his personal feelings aside and put and keep the players on the team that can get the wins that count. These guys are human, they arent emotion empty, things happen. Chad Johnson didnt do anything that anyone can prove. Judgment came too soon. This is really Life. Sad that ppl here judge and hold ppl to a standard that many dont live by themselves. Philbin has an agenda and Chad was not in it. period. Let see how he handles the next player makes the next human mistake and then we will see how you ppl with that same attitude make excuses for him.
