Joaquin Amador Serrapio Jr., the 20-year-old local musician who fantasized on social media about killing Barack Obama, will avoid jail time after his threats caught the attention of the Secret Service. Instead, Serrapio will face home confinement, probation, and community service. He'll also be forced to speak to high school and college students to warn them not to post stupid things online, which seems apt.

Back in February, when Obama visited the University of Miami, Serrapio posted online about his plans to kill the president.

"Who wants to help me assassinate Obummer while hes at UM this week?" he wrote on Facebook, two days before the POTUS appearance.

"If anyones going to UM to see obama today, get ur phones out an record. Cause at any moment im gonna put a bullet through his head and u don't wanna miss that! Youtube!" he wrote the morning of the speech.

Serrapio's Twitter was also filled with several racist remarks and another threat toward the Prez.

The Secret Service got wind and searched his South Miami home. They only found airsoft guns, but did find text messages on his phone that also contained threats to Obama's life.

Serrapio, a musician who goes under the name Jay Valor, and fronted a local bar band, the Jay Valor Band, pleaded guilty in May. He was sentenced today.

He now faces four months home confinement, three years probation, and 250 hours of community service. He'll also lecture students on the dangers of posting online. He could have faced up to five years in prison.

Serrapio's attorney tells NBC Miami that the posting were meant as a joke, and only wanted to get a rise out of Obama supporters.

Serrapio has since penned an apology to the president and the Secret Service.

People in this thread are not understanding what a slippery slope this is. Once these tactics become normalized, they can be used for political ends, like in other countries where people don't have rights. This is essentially what happened to someone I know who went up to protest the NATO Summit in Chicago. Undercover informants tipped off the police to raid the apartment he was staying at, and now he's facing 11 charges of felony terrorism. The problem is that, he didn't actually do anything. This is the first time they're trying to use anti-terror laws in Chicago and surprise surprise, few people are speaking out about it. http://bit.ly/MyC3HC

Ok, I am going to be the person to defend him. This guy has the balls to do it! If you dont agree with someones way of doing things, you shouldnt be prosecuted for it! This law came into effect in the last 10 years and in my honest opinion is total BS! The president is elected by the people and is not a king or a damn demigod! He has to be put in his place and if he has to place fear into people so he can retain his position then guess what, he is an epic fail! Plain and simple!

It's one thing to make an off handed comment. It's another to directly threaten someone's life, state a date time and location of said threat occurring. Freedom of Speech is meant for voicing your opinion and ideals not threatening the life of other citizens, especially not an elected official who you know.... Has an entire security detail specifically dedicated to investigating violent threats against said elected official.

I'm glad they are cracking down on this stuff.  I am so tired of the threats and insults hurled at this President.  He is a fine and decent man, looking out for the middle class as best he can while the 'baggers in the House play games and have fake votes rather than trying to fix the economy.  I hope this guy enjoys his four months stuck at home.  And three years probation - that's gotta suck if you tend to be a barfly.  Enjoy!
