Dolphins Apparently Didn't Realize Fans Can't Kick 60-Yard Field Goals

Usually halftime contests involving fans at sporting games are silly affairs, but the contest slated to go down at the Miami Dolphins' home opener this weekend seems ridiculously tough. The team will give three fans a chance to win $10,000 if they can kick a 60-yard field goal. Think about that. A 60-yard field goal. Some professional kickers can't even make that reliably.

Update: The Dolphins have lessened the distance.

The idea for the contest at least comes from a good place. The team has been hosting a series of free melanoma screenings, after CFO Mark Brockelman's wife died from the serious form of skin cancer in 2010. The 'Fins picked three fans who attended a screening they had in June to participate in the contest.

Those fans can win $10,000 ... if they kick a field goal from the fifty yard line.

Yes, the contest is particularly relevant to the Dolphins, considering long-distance field goals are about the only way this team scores anymore, but, uh, yeah we doubt a bunch of amateurs will be able to make the distance. At that distance, some NFL kickers couldn't even put it between the goal posts 100 percent of the time, even without a defense on the field. Hell, the longest field goal Dan Carpenter has ever kicked in a game was 60 yards. That's a team record. Seriously.

So basically, the team is asking their fans to play better than their players. Why not reward fans who can run a four minute mile during halftime with $10k and a contract? It might be an improvement over their actual players anyway.

Update: According to Pro Football Talk, the team realized that, whoops, an average fan has no hope of kicking a 60-yard field goal. So they've moved the distance to a 40-yard field goal.

@akosnitzky Seriously? Lol that's hysterical. Glad they moved it to the 40. Still no chance, though.
