Not Just Midtown: Walmart Has Plans to Expand All Over Miami-Dade

Plans to erect a giant Walmart smack dab in the middle of the Wynwood/Midtown area have garnered headlines, but that's just the tip of the iceberg for Walmart's plans for Miami-Dade. The controversial big-box chain is looking to add six more stores in Miami-Dade in the next two years.

Walmart has never quite taken hold in Miami-Dade as it has much of the rest of the South. The chain only operates 11 stores in the county today. To put that in prospective, neighboring Collier County, which has only 12 percent of our population, now has six Walmart stores. As the Miami Herald points out, South Florida is the only market in the Southeast where Walmart's grocery share is third, with about 11.6 percent of the market.

In other words, Walmart realizes there's still room for growth in the county.

Plans to plop down a store in the rapidly gentrifying Midtown area have garnered nothing short of controversy. It might be Walmart's closest store to the urban center of a major American metro area in the entire country.

According to the Herald, Walmart also has plans for six other new stores in the county:

  • A neighborhood market in Hialeah opening within a month.
  • A neighborhood market in Homestead planned for summer 2013.
  • A Supercenter in Goulds planned for fall 2013.
  • A Supercenter in Homestead planned for early 2014.
  • A Supercenter in Miami at Flagler St. & NW 92nd Ave. in the Fountainbleau area planned for 2014
  • A neighborhood market in the Flagami area planned for 2014.

Walmart is also expanding in Broward and Palm Beach counties as well. According to the Herald, that's about a $380 million investment in South Florida planned over the next two years.

dear geoff there are over 150 million americans unemployed out of 300 , they wouldnt dare to report that fucking fact about corporate companys wanting to monopolize the hell of of any bussiness out there. for example if a local stores does well they will either buy it or opressed them with political influence of saying how much money the state will make without mentioning not one fucking dime would be actually for the local customers ...you dumbass lol

Yes, we must stop Wal-Mart from coming in to Midtown and gobbling up all the small businesses in the area, such as Target, Ross, Marshalls, Sports Authority, and Petsmart. A Wal-Mart would completely ruin the character that Midtown derives from such local, small businesses.

How are they legally able to do all of this without getting in trouble? Isnt illegal to create a monopoly? Because technically that's what their doing. Ijs.....

It's been said that 50% of those who work at Walmart are eligible for food stamps. Is this really a positive local business we as Miami tax payers should be supporting?????!!!! foolish! Those with the power to decide should set the tone for what comes into our community.

Target is always empty because they're expensive!

Aj as much as I agree with you on some points I have to say as a Little Havana resident for a long time... that shopping center on 37ave and 7th street NW across the street from City Casino SUCKS! K-mart SUCKS. Winn-Dixie SUCKS. And to top it off all those mom n pop stores SUCK as well... They need to bring a Walmart super center and a Lowes Home Improvement there. Period.

That area has to continue growth with local small business...Midtown's style and culture seems to be thriving with the local small business model. The small business culture is what gives the area it's charm...more personalized, friendly business where the owner's know thier customers and clients. No Walmart please!!!

in Little Havana?!?! What did I say about Cuban owned businesses? If they open a WalMart, let's say on that lot on 22nd and 1st SW, Sedano's-Tropical Supermarket-restaurants, just to name a few from 27th to 4th avenue in Brickell will go out of business or struggle.

not only in every corner, but in every estrategic corner, namely in Miami I've seen 2 gas stations being bulldozed to welcome a CHASE (Flagler & Douglas and 27th & 8th).

see where most Dade WalMarts are located, except Doral and Hialeah Gardens... AS FAR AS POSSIBLE FROM MAIN BUSINESS ARTERIES, WHERE THEY CAN'T HAMPER CUBAN OR JEWISH OWNED BUSINESSES. Case in point?! Golden Glades. As far away from Aventura/NMB but slightly close to Carol City/Norland which is to say, both cities are sandwiched between this WalMart and the one on 27th and Dan Marino Blvd. Talk about freedom of choice. The one on Kendall Drive is 2 feet fromn the Urban Development Line, and so on and so forth.

For you folks down there ,get a group together and go fight it. They dont hire enough to make a difference or pay enough. If you notice where they have their employees doin other jobs outside there departments giving the employee extra work so they dont have to hire soeone else. Plus all the cash register lines and only 2 or 3 of them open. Dont think its gonna help Miami-dade.

not only a small busniess killer, but also a huge provider of outsourced jobs in foreign countries with less than humane working conditions. and they keep on growing and growing at the expense of the poor. look at the forbes richest list and check how many of them have the last name walden. its disgusting.

besides, the planners have to asses the area because a Supercenter bordering Wynwood/Liberty City/Little Haiti will be shoplifted ever nanosecond (YES, I SAY THE THINGS NONE OF YOU DARE TO!!).

is not an "ego issue", is just that WalMart will gobble every mom-&-pop stores in a 12 mile radius. Every PUBLIX or WinnDixie in the area will succumb to such an atrocity... Why don't they open near Gables or Aventura?! I wonder who politicians avoid to piss-off.

If they try to open something in Coconut Grove, I'm going to get a little stabby.  Literally.  I hear Wal-Mart has a great outdoor hunting knife section!
