Cubans Are Now Liberals. Good-bye Marco Rubio.

Now we know why Mitt Romney released a last minute campaign ad in South Florida trying to link Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro to Barack Obama. It was a desperation.

Romney knew he had to to stave off the biggest surprise of the presidential election in Florida: Nearly half of Miami-Dade's Cuban American voters decided to stick with the President.

The Massachusetts governor must have known that an October 28 poll in the Miami Herald was way off. It showed 76 percent of Cuban Americans in Miami-Dade were going to cast ballots for Romney.

The election proved that Cuban American politicians need to start changing their tune if they want to stay in power. Considering the following:

On election day, Obama won the Cuban-American vote 53 percent to 47 percent over Romney, according to an exit poll by Bendixen & Amandi International. Exit polls by Fox News and The Pew Hispanic Center showed the president winning 49 percent of the overall Cuban vote to Romney's 47 percent. According to Fox, the Tea Party's number one source of information, Obama gained 13 percent more Cuban Americans than in 2008.

Just as interesting are the liberal Cuban Americans who won Tuesday. Democratic candidate Joe Garcia pounded incumbent Congresman David Rivera by 11 points. Sure Rivera lost voters because he's under two federal investigations, but his opponent favors allowing Cuban Americans to travel to their homeland and easing other restrictions against Castro. Garcia also registered more new voters than Rivera before the election.

Jose Javier Rodriguez, another Democratic Cuban American who favors Obama's moderate Cuba policy, killed Republican hardliner Alex Diaz de la Portilla 54 percent to 46 percent.

And Juan Carlos Zapata, a former state legislator, became the first non-Cuban Hispanic since Maurice Ferre to be elected to the County Commission.

The Tea Party faithful, like ABC/Newsweek pundit George Will, are quickly anointing Sen. Marco Rubio as the G.O.P's Great Brown Hope. His name is at the top of the Republican nominee list for 2016. But Rubio better watch out if he keeps messing with Cuban-Americans' desire to visit and help their relatives in Cuba. He's also opposed to the DREAM Act, which would allow hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants to stay in the country.

We all know Rubio can't relate to the 70 percent of Hispanics who voted to re-elect Obama. He's just like recently ousted Congressman Allen West, an African-American in Tea Party clothing. Rubio represents the dying Cuban American hardliners who are trying to push the same right wing agenda Romney was campaigning on.

If Marco keeps that crap up, he won't get re-elected in 2014.

Remember we are 25 years seperated from Cubans blowing up those that disagreed with the old gaurd of reactionaries that still controll Cuban media. The real change will come in another ten to fifteen years when they die off. Cubans support public schools, public health, equal access, freeer travel, all liberal ideals. The old gaurd grew up in a country where the government was corrupt, before and after the revolution, so their distrust of government is understandable. Their children and grandchildren must learn to speak up and drown out the old voices of the reactionaries.

Cubans, like myself, voted for Obama because we support his policies of allowing unrestricted travel and remittances to our families. The GOPs days are numbered. This community, like all others, is moving further and further away from the warmongering policies of the GOP, and thank goodness for it.

I am an "old school" 58 year old Cuban-born American citizen who arrived in this NYC in 1957 at 3 years of age. Honestly, I am sick and tired of my esteemed fellow Cuban-American brothers' and sisters' myopic, head-in-the-sand, led by the nose attitude, when it comes to this topic. For years I observed my Dad vote staunchly Republican and cheer every ridiculously ineffectual hard-line Cuban policy either promised or (worse) actually enacted by these people. And I have observed with equal horror and embarrassment past Democratic administrations curry favor with our local hardliners by pandering to our basest instincts and values on this topic.  The Cuban Embargo began with the passage of the "Cuban Democracy Act" of 1963. Can't anyone read?? After 50 years we see no signs of "democracy" in Cuba. Indeed, what we have seen is the passing the torch from one tyrant to his, arguably, worse brother. I can accept the continuation of the embargo only if we admit that its purpose is not to effectuate regime change in Cuba, but rather, to simply serve as an otherwise useless emotional balm for our collective disappointment at the hijacking of our revolution by the modern-day caudillo Castros. Otherwise, under any other rubric, the embargo has failed miserably. As an American, I view this issue simply as "what is in the best interests of America?" That is it. All the other emotional stuff is of no moment to America's ruling class. To think otherwise is part of my community's ongoing political immaturity. We have relations with  totalitarian regimes throughout the world.  We have even sent our soldiers to die on behalf of such regimes (think Vietnam and Kuwait). My God, even Nixon toasted with Chairman Mao (who makes Fidel look like a choir boy by comparison). Our biggest trading partner is a country that FORCES its citizens to undergo abortions! We need to engage in a rapprochement with Cuba, and I am not interested in any quid pro quo from the tyrants there. Like Nike says; Just do it. It's past time and the same old same old has proven beyond doubt not to bear fruit. Oh, and the reason my Dad and his cohorts voted Republican goes back to the 1961 Bay of Pigs where Kennedy (a Democrat) refused to order air support for the invading brigade. Jesus! I have a question: how come Castro didn't need any air cover when he was fighting to overthrow the Batista dictatorship? (while, incidentally, under attack by U.S. supplied fighter planes). Really, enough already. And if one more politician (of either party) comes to Miami and extols tough-on-Cuba policies.....if I have to wait another 50 years through this embargo bs, I'll be dead. Republican (and to be fair, past Democratic) hard-line policies are an anachronism and should be discarded to the dustbin of history. Progressive voters are on the right side of history - as usual.

Four years ago the US was losing 159,000 jobs per month. In fact December of 2008 the US actually lost 524,000 jobs for the month. Now we are creating an average 120,000 jobs per month. For October it is 171,000 jobs created. The unemployment rate has gone down under this administration, to 7.8%. Not ideal, but we are moving in the right direction. You don’t have to take it from me. We have the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You can Google them and go to their website. The Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing Business Survey Committee reports that manufacturing is growing at the highest level since 2007. Again don’t take it from me. Google them for their website. Please do not let others trick you into believing things are worse. We are getting better, America. Let’s stay the course and vote for Obama.

You can check this data at the Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS) site. Or just do a search for jobs report December 2008. Do the same for September 2012 and you’ll find that 120,000 jobs were created.

Keep it up Luke. Most of the comments are from angry Romney voters. Come on commentors keep spewing those nicely written, thought-provoking comments / sarcasm. I get a kick out of your Miami-Dade educated asses that graduated 6-8 years after high school. The overachievers of Miami I bow to you all. Let's go out and buy more Heat Jerseys and say racists shit about blacks behind closed doors. Is that what you mean about personal things behind closed doors mastrorpb? Racists and Bigots is the values that are being taught in Miami. I'm glad I escaped Shit City.

we shuold be teaching decent values to our children . If people with alternitive life styles want to be who they are, do it in private the way I show my affection to my spouse. I don't condem the way people choose to live their lives ,These are personal things that should be done with some discretion.  and by the way , I enlisted in the air force to protect your right to to shot your liberal mouth off

I'm laughing at all you ignorants that throw childish insults at republicans or democrats. Grow up. Face it, they're both the same crap. Neither is better than the other. Democrats aren't progressive and Republicans aren't fiscally conservative.

Also, Luke, you should be ashamed for writing such a crappy article. Actually, a lot of your articles have been shit. You were cool in 2 live crew but now you're just another black guy saying the same thing every other black person says. Whats the point in reading your stuff?

I heard this the day of the elections.

If the Bay of Pigs invasion had been successful and castro overthrown, the same idiots would have re-elected him 20 years later. Face it, socialism is for the poor and uneducated. You can claim that it's worked in scandinavian countries, but where else has it worked? Socialism in eastern europe failed. Socialism in latin america failed. Socialism in North America will fail.

Not all cubans vote republican the same way that not all african americans vote democrat. I'm sick to freakin death of all these dividing lines. To the person who said all cubans are communist: you're a f-kin moron. To the person who loves luke's commentary: that's your prerogative but he's largely incorrect. when are we all going to start acting like we're in this together? because guess what? WE ARE!!! and btw, I say this as a proud Puerto Rican, Gay, Liberal Democrat. We need to start acting together. ain't no one here better than me and i'm not better than anyone. We all have good points we all have flaws. GET THE F-K OVER YOURSELVES

all the cubans that voted for obama should go back to cuba if they want that kind of government. Many of the cubans came to this country to escape that type of oppression . that is what is going to happen when the government controls all aspects of you life. If you want free medical and education , cuba is the land of that type of opportunity.  adios amigos!

Republicans are all hypocrites and I am glad we the people have finally shown that we have had enough. The overwhelming growing income gap between the rich and the rest of the people needs to be fixed and if taking from government will force equality from the rich, then more power to us. One thing is for sure, fascism will no longer be tolerated by Americans and our voices have and will continue to be heard...

I still believed that Romney was the better man to be president. Too bad the receivers had more power on election day.

@lizbethagee33 Unemployment rate is actually a lot more; everyone knows the scam they are playing with the numbers. The rate is actually a lot more when you figure the people no longer looking for work and have given up. As far as your 120,000 per month is pathetic at best. In order to sustain a healhty economy you need at least 320,000 jobs created per month so we are in deep shttt. Obama has failed and will keep failing. Twenty one new taxes for Obama Care has already forced many businesses to call it quits and go elsewhere. 32 million on Foodstamps and 47 million on welfare and thousands scheduled to lose their jobs. You call this success? I hate to see what you call a failure!

@mastrorpb You see what I mean about you all being hypocrites. You should be stating the oppression your party seemingly wants to impose on women, gays and everyone that isn't white. Further I don't see any republican complaining about the banks getting a handout while the people got f----ed.

your problem is that you want what I worked my a$% off for . when my grandparents came from Italy they had assimilate jmmediately in order to survive and they were happy to become productive citizens. there was no food stamps or welfare , they learned the language, found work and morphed into the american society.   as far as gays, minorities and women being oppressed,  thats the typical talking point that the libs use to poison minds like yours. I personally do not want to pay for someone elses free lunch or medical or education.  I;m 75 yrs. young and I got out of bed at 4:00 a m every morning and went to work in N Y in all kinds of weather . I supported my family in the style of the american culture, I payed for their education and retired to a decent lifestyle because I earned it.  Get off your a%$ and do what I did . you wil have many more opportunities than I did ..........
