Florida Is Set to Issue Its One Millionth Concealed Carry Permit Next Week

Florida is on pace to become the first state to issue its one millionth active concealed carry permit sometime next week, as more than 167,000 permits are issued each year. Florida has already issued more concealed carry permits than any other state, and is set to become the first to break the one million mark.

To put that in perspective, that means nearly 5.24 percent of Floridians have a concealed carry permit.

Florida also recognizes permits from all other states, so the total number of people in the state with concealed carry permits may actually be higher.

Applications for permits have been booming in recent years. According to USA Today, just ten years ago only 28,000 people a year applied for the license. In 2010 that number hit the 167,000 mark.

"Floridians who are obtaining these licenses are obtaining them for the right reason and are using them in an appropriate way," Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam told Reuters. He added that just 0.3 percent of the 2.3 million total concealed carry permits issued since 1987 have been revoked.

Despite increasingly harsher federal legislation requiring background checks, Florida has some of the most lax gun laws in the country.

Some speculate that the increase in gun sales in the past four years is connected the fear that president Barack Obama may place tougher federal laws on gun ownership. The administration offered no such proposals during its first time, but the President's Press Secretary noted today in the wake of the tragedy in Connecticut that a ban on assault weapons is still "on the table."

So, the question is..  Has crime gone up or down with the increase in CCW?  I would suspect it's gone done otherwise it would have been mentioned in the article.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that if the teachers had a little handgun, they would have been able to stop the gunman with the M4 and glock. Just like in Aurora earlier this year, all the pro gun people shouting "well if someone had a gun, they could have killed the lunatic!" SURE, with all the tear gas, and the shock. Also, the other stupid as hell argument, that "cars and knives" can kill people, is so goddamn stupid. I would love to see you try to kill 30 people with a Honda Civic. Dumbasses.

I hope your not caught in that predicament without a gun wishing you had one. God bless all those innocent lives that are lost to these cowards. I guess Florida is in the right direction because thankfully massacres like this haven't happened here yet.

@ Antonio are you really that fucking stupid to think that a knife has an equal capability of killing as a gun does?

Another brilliant comment. Guns aren't the only things that kill people so don't work on taking away guns

@ Manuel it's reality my friend and life is going to get crazier, you can't assume people have the right mind to do the right thing. You need to be prepared for things like this. If someone with a gun was in the right place and at the right time like today and in Aurora movie theater or in the mall, a gun with a brave person could have saved these innocent people and children. I have one and I'll be prepared for any crazy ass people intending to harm me, my family or any innocent by stander!!!

@jeremie and adri, yeah let's throw more guns at the gun problem. Genius. "If a teacher had a gun..." The most ridiculous thing I've ever heard literally. If my kid went to a school where guns were allowed to be held by teachers I would remove them before you could take your next breath. Jesus Christ people

Putting more guns on the streets is only going to create more violence. Guns aren't innocuous objects. They serve one purpose, and that is to kill. Adding more guns to a situation like this would only work to further confuse and escalate the situation. What we need to do is get rid of casual access to guns. Of the high profile shootings in the last year, guns were either bought out-right or were stolen from private citizens who knew the suspects. Stricter gun access would have easily prevented these people from acquiring these weapons. A killing spree with a knife, for example, would have been much easier to quell with much less life lost.

Florida residents are protecting themselves from tragedies like the one in Connecticut! Its imperative for people to protect themselves n their families. Everyone should carry n do it legally. If someone or a teacher had a gun in this school, this tragedy could have been stopped with less lives lost. How many more schools are going to have massacres???? Teachers need to carry guns and protect our children at all times!!!!!

How the fuck does this relate to today's tragedy you fuck wades? It's even in bad taste to try and make a political argument (pro or con) hours after one of our worst tragedies. I typically like your magazine. But you are definitely in bad taste today!
