Carlos Bertonatti Set to Plead Guilty to Key Biscayne Hit-and-Run

Categories: Crime
It's taken three full years, but Carlos Bertonatti is finally set to admit in court that he killed cyclist Christophe LeCanne in a drunken, early-morning hit-and-run on the Rickenbacker Causeway. Bertonatti told a Miami-Dade judge today that he'll plead guilty next Tuesday.

The aspiring singer-songwriter sped away from the January 2010 crash with LeCanne's bike wedged under his bumper and led police on a brief chase across the island. His blood alcohol content was later tested at .122, well over the limit.

LeCanne's death spurred outrage in Miami's cycling community. A 44-year-old father and avid cyclist, LeCanne was biking the popular link between Miami and Key Biscayne just after 8 a.m. on a Sunday when Bertonatti's silver Volkswagen slammed into him.

Bertonatti, who had more than 40 previous traffic violations on his record, led police on a short chase before surrendering.

He's been on house arrest for nearly two years since the crime because a series of delays have prevented a trial date from being set. Now Bertonatti will face between 11-and-a-half and 35 years in prison for the crime, the Miami Herald reports.

Judge Bronwyn Miller will sentence him next Tuesday, when LeCanne's relatives will travel to the courthouse from France.

This little faggot is gonna get his butt hole widened a few inches when his cell mate Ben Dover greets him in prison.

No one over the age of 12 should ride a bicycle, especially not a grown man. These a**holes with their Spandex and goofy helmets block the traffic of real adults going somewhere in their cars. They are a**holes because they have the "right of way" and again, the adults have to drive 10 MPH behind these self important nitwits.

I don't see half the uproar against this guy as it is for Karlie. This is worst to me as this guy had 40 yes 40 previous traffic violations. Karlie doesn't have any. I am not defending Karlie but fair is fair. Media had gone like dogs over Karlie, mocking her with he Tweet name. ENOUGH. She still is a human being and there is no need from supposed professional journalist to keep on with the princess bull shit. Put it rest Media, have some dignity and respect. Her name is Karlie Tomica. The girl has enough on her plate, don't be such asses. Why don't you get as hard on this boy??? They both had made a terrible mistake that would hunted them for the rest of their life. This guy for being a man is way worst than Karlie. Anyway, may God bless them both and their families but in special the families of the deceased.

Unfortunately the whole clan wasn't deported back to Venezuela before this happened, from the article links, the whole family just moves on from scam to scam, trouble just seems to be attracted to them. And it's not just a case of bad luck.

So... is this a prelude to him being found "not guilty" - is his team of lawyers going to use the Jedi Mind Trick? I might be confused, but something smells fishy here.

wow...2 yrs! I feel sorry for this guy. Just threw his life away. and if he has an conscience, this incident will never leave him as it shouldn't. Hopefully, he'll become a safety advocate or a force for something else positive some day. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE GUYS...!

@leoleoleo STFU you cocksucker nitwit. The guy was in a bike lane, the drunk prick that hit him had over forty citations. He & the fucking judges should go to prison. Another reason why I left that nigger, cuban shit hole called S.Florida.

@leoleoleo Except he was in a bike lane, not blocking any traffic, and this guy was drunk and speeding.

Should people also be forbidden to walk? I mean, all those crosswalks slow you down, too. Let's ban busses, cabs and mail trucks, too - people need to either buy a car or die at home, and everyone just needs to figure out email, already.

Or maybe expecting everyone to conform to YOUR personal preference in transportation is also self-important? Hmmmmm...

@Wenceslao Fernandez Jr ....yeah, you can dream on that.......the guy has 40 traffic tickets, sped away with the bike stuck in his car, had the police to chase him......it seems the guy is pretty much a done deal......It won't be two years although, more likely 20 to 30......We shall see if he becomes and advocated.....he should had. Maybe Karlie would had think twice if he had been an advocated but he never did.
