Fugitive Evades Miami-Dade Police by Stabbing Officer With Eyeglasses in a Texas Walmart Parking Lot

Miami-Dade police were charged with extraditing Alberto Morales to Las Vegas, but the convict managed to escape by stabbing a detective with his eyeglasses in a Walmart parking lot in Grapevine, Texas.

The detective, Jaime Pardinas, is still in serious but stable condition. Morales, however, remains at large.

Pardinas, a 28-year veteran of the force, is part of the MDPD's extradition team and, along with his partner, was transporting Morales to Las Vegas, where he was due to be appear in court on sexual battery charges. Morales was captured and being held in Miami on assault, kidnapping, burglary, and sexual assault charges.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the officers were transferring Morales by plane. The trip included making a connecting flight at a Houston airport. However, during the initial plane ride, Morales became agitated.

"He began bumping his head against a passenger's seat," said MDPD Director J.D. Patterson, who described his behavior as including "crazy, unusual things that disrupted a lot of the flight."

The officers were informed that Morales would not be allowed on the flight to Las Vegas, so the pair decided to rent a car and meet another Miami-Dade officer at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

However, they made a pit stop at a Walmart in Grapevine.

Morales was shackled in the back seat but somehow broke off the earpiece of his own glasses and reached around to stab Pardinas multiple times. The officer suffered multiple wounds to his chest and back. He's in stable condition, and his family is traveling to Texas.

Morales is still on the run, and MDPD is assisting local officers in Texas with the manhunt.
