Perry Hotel to Lay Off 138 Workers as It Undergoes Renovations; STK to Lay Off 80
Unfortunately, that means 138 hotel employees will soon be out jobs. 84 other jobs from connected companies will also be lost.
According to the South Florida Business Journal, the hotel's management firm, Hospitality Property Management II, filed a notice with the state today declaring the impending mass layoff.
On February 12, STK Miami Service LLC also filed a WARN notice with the state that it was slated to lay off 80 workers. Two other smaller WARN notices were also filed by companies connected to the hotel. Those notices affect four employees in total. Update: Just to be clear STK is not closing. The workers being laid off provide room service and other related services to the hotel.
All in all, that's a loss of 222 positions.
The layoffs are all slated to take effect April 15, which should give us a clue as to when the hotel is slated to officially close.
It's the biggest mass layoff to hit Miami-Dade this year, and the largest in the county since the University of Miami's medical school laid off 800 last summer.
The good news, numbers-wise, is that many of those jobs will be regained when the resort eventually reopens.
