Florida Group Predicts "Surge of Boy-on-Boy Sexual Conduct" If Gays Join Boy Scouts

John Stemberger is perhaps Florida's best-known homophobe. He was deeply involved in Florida's effort to ban gay marriage and runs the Florida Family Policy Council, a group that opposes just about any bit of legal protection for the LGBT community. Now he's decided to start a separate group solely to keep openly gay members out of Boy Scouts and in typical Stemberger fashion is using fear-mongering rhetoric straight out of the 1950s.

Stemberger is now founder and president of On My Honor, a group that aims to "keep sex and politics out of Boy Scouts." The website includes an eight-point list of the impact they believe openly gay members would have on scouting.

The group predicts a "mass exodus" of members if the BSA were to allow gay scouts and leaders, "Just as Canadian scouts saw a 50 percent drop over five years as a result of this same policy change in 1998."

What the group fails to mention is that in 1998, Scouts Canada enacted a number of reforms, including allowing girls to join. It also fails to point out that since 1999, the Boy Scouts of America's own membership has declined by about one-third and that, obviously, opinions have changed quite a bit since 1998.

The list also predicts "a surge of boy-on-boy sexual conduct" and "Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops marching in gay-pride parades with salacious conduct and partial nudity." And for some reason, worries about "URL website links from individual pack, troop, and council websites to other websites with inappropriate sexual and political content."

The threat of URL website links? Seems like they're grasping at straws here.

Most of the rhetoric isn't backed up or explained.

"What kind of a message are we sending to our young people if the very leaders who are teaching Boy Scouts to be brave, cannot even find the courage to stand firm and avoid caving to peer pressure from Hollywood and political activists?" Stemberger, who himself is a professional political activist, says in a news release.

It's not as if the BSA isn't one great big "milkshake club" as it is...

Hate to break it to them but there have always been gays in the Boy Scouts. I was a Girl Scout, but it was not an issue there. Just like there were always gays in the military, in schools, at the post office, at the restaurant you eat at, where you get your hair cut, walking past you on the street, sitting next to you on the bus. You get my point. We are here, and you haven't caught "the gay" yet, right?

my troop was about as homophobic as you could get wearing nut-huggers....

Provided the behavior consensual and safe, there's nothing wrong with sexual relationships between young people of any orientation.  Full or partial nudity are utterly harmless.  "Salacious conduct" once included women exposing their ankles in public.  And "inappropriate" behavior is an extraordinarily subjective judgment of little use in policy debates.

It's hilarious that these people think that all the straight boys are going to turn gay if there happens to be a gay around. Is sex with women really that bad that they would think this?

Being proud of your sexual orientation does not make you promiscuous, the thought is despicable

I wonder if administrators at Penn State feel that such diversity is a positive in the wake of the Sandusky scandal ?

@elliot, no it's not always what happens. Yes there might be consensual sex occasionally. But why is it an automatic occurrence? From what I've been reading recently there's more reason to think "straight" men are the ones with the open zipper problem

I'm just waiting to hear the breaking news alert in a few months about how this whackjob is either a child molester or has had a boyfriend on the low for a couple of years.

That happens anyway you idiots and what is the big deal when it does happen, as long as it is consensual.

Seriously, giving them the spotlight isn't going to help the cause.

What a moron, why do you even give idiots like these the time of the day by blogging about them?

People who accuse or hate others of being gay are often covering up their own latent homosexuality

Do you have something to hide?

@jgcamp99 The abuse of power has no relation to diversity per se.  Should we reevaluate our acceptance of heterosexuality based on the current USC rape scandals?

@jgcamp99 Please tell me you're not comparing homosexuality and sexual predators.

If you're not, sorry, but I still don't understand your comment.

If you are, you're a fucking moron.

And since the Boy Scouts is exclusively male membership, the potential for homosexual pedophile increases as gay males are allowed access. I mean, employment screening is not a perfect process should a pedophile gain the trust of the organization and be employed. But like Sandusky, any molestation that would happen would be male on male and by definition once again be homosexual pedophile rape.

@disiliquent @jgcamp99 As I understand the differences between USC & PSU, alleged charges never stuck at USC, were never tried in a courtroom, some even subsequently dropped by the accusers. There's a difference between accusations (Colorado football & Duke University LaCrosse team as well) and being convicted of those charges ? To me, it's not as simple as identifying abuse of power as the sole motivation, human beings are far more complex to limit it to that single motivation.

@Bebep @jgcamp99 I may be thinking outside of the box on this one, but if one agrees that Sandusky is guilty of being a sexual predator based on the findings and court & jury's decisions & convictions. And that he showed an exclusive preference for same gender molestations for an extended period and for the duration that Sandusky did with the number of male victims identified, when 2nd Mile offered an equal opportunity exposure to both genders. The very fact that a lack of a single female victim being identified, by the very definition of homosexuality, Sandusky is gay male pedophile. And that would make you the moron/village idiot for not being able to connect those dots. Sorry the definitions and reality of that situation doesn't support what you want it to be. I call it the way it is, not leave it short for the agenda du jour. I hope you can understand my comment at this point, because if you don't, I can't help you comprehend the complexities involved in the Sandusky scandal at PSU.

@Bebep @Jimbo99 @jgcamp99

search the term "boy scouts" here at new times and read this article:

Maybe someday you'll realize that it's a little bigger problem than you want to admit to.

@Jimbo99  @jgcamp99 Claiming to be thinking outside the box is a great way to mask being completely wrong.

I'm glad you can write coherently and use big words, congrats.

This still doesn't change the fact that you're a fucking moron for insinuating that because someone is gay the chances of pedophilia being committed would go up just because it's an all male institution.

The facts and reality of the situation actually support what it is, not what YOU want it to be.
