Cuba Using Beyonce to Distract From Dissident Yoani Sanchez's World Tour

Beyoncé and Jay-Z seem to be having a lot of fun in Cuba this week. Strolling through the streets of Havana with big smiles, apparently without a worry in their heads that their mere presence would be seized upon by the communist Cuban propaganda machine.

Right on cue, the top Cuban diplomat in Washington is somewhat comically complaining that the American media is spending too much time covering the world tour of Cuban dissident Yoani Sanchez and not enough time talking about Beyoncé.

"Too much attention has been devoted to this lady, taking a lot of attention from the most important... news that has been happening these days in regards to Cuba," diplomat Jose Cabanas said yesterday, according to Reuters. "Including the presence of Beyoncé, the singer, who is today in Havana, enjoying a lot of attention from the public, but it's not covered by the media -- incredible."

"This lady" that Cabanas is referring to is Sanchez. The blogger, who has become the premier cyber-age critique of the Castro regime, is on an 80-day tour of the world. Her tour included a stop in Miami at the Freedom Tower this past Monday.

Sanchez's international tour de Castro criticism has doubtlessly left the Cuban government uneasy, but as a representative for a country ever critical of America, Cabanas is perhaps overestimating the state of our media and the interests of our people. Cabanas is basically damning the American media for supposedly paying too much attention to an important political story and not enough to rich, beautiful celebrities having fun. Most other critiques of American media would posit the exact opposite.

The visit of one of America's most famous couples has garnered countless headlines since the news broke yesterday afternoon (it was the top story on El Nuevo Herald's website), and we'd wager in that short time more Americans now know that Beyoncé is in Havana than even know who Yoani Sanchez is.

Though the dates of the Knowles-Carter trip to Havana might have been chosen to celebrate the couple's fifth wedding anniversary, politically it couldn't have been more poorly timed. But maybe in an odd way, it could draw more attention to Sanchez's message. Hell, anytime you can fit someone into a headline with Beyoncé, it's guaranteed to garner more attention. Unfortunately for Beyoncé, this time it won't make her look too good.

Oh please. 60 years of embargo have had no effect whatsoever. Has there ever been a more epic American foreign policy failure than the Cuba embargo? It wet foot dry foot immigration policy

Interesting how people so concerned with freedom of Cubans in Cuba would prevent American citizens from travelling freely.

@tony interesting point my friend, I wouldn't doubt it. Castro is a son of a bitch to let dissidence as a shill play. But who knows, she speaks from the heart I believe. And a hero to us all.

Stop Talking about Yoani Sanchez? Ha. The Cuban Government wants you to talk about her. She is a plant to fool the gullible media into believing that they accept the opposition. The real Opposition in Cuba are either rotting away in the depths of prison or dead.

I mean, it seems that they'll stop at nothing to get the nedia's attention, for good or ill!! These ppl can vacation ANYWHERE in the world & they choose Cuba. It's like they want to go "ig'nant" (to quote Kanye). lol Ridiculous ~ I.ve lost what little shred of respect I might have had for them.

Who the hell cares about their trip to Cuba.... It is not news worthy! Now Yoani Sanchez's trip around the world is news worthy because she is speaking about awareness about her country and speaking out against a communist regime. I don't care about rich people parading around for their wedding anniversary! If they were helping rebuild a school or help out the poor then it may be a different story. This Cuban Diplomat is an idiot for suggesting such a thing.

@dantevida the owners of a Canadian company I contract with just got back from a vacation in Cuba. I had commented how I wouldn't be able to go and one replied with "you live in America, the land of the free, unless you want to marry your boyfriend [I am gay] or visit Cuba." I didn't have a comeback because it's true. It is sad how far ahead of us our neighbors to the north are.

@FabulousKeeps Elizabeth Alvarez

Maybe they just wanted to go to Cuba since it is a beautiful country?

All of their vacations become news somewhere. It's part of being a celebrity.

@Tony CastaneiraCAN YOU PROVIDE PROOF DEAR? OTHERWISE YOU ARE COMMITTING DEFAMATION/LIBEL!

DEFAMATION—also called calumny, vilification, traducement, slander (for transitory statements), and libel (for written, broadcast, or otherwise published words)—is the communication of a statement that makes a claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government, religion, or nation a negative or inferior image. This can be also any disparaging statement made by one person about another, which is communicated or published, whether true or false, depending on legal state. In Common Law it is usually a requirement that this claim be false and that the publication is communicated to someone other than the person defamed (the claimant).[1]   INNUENDO: is an insinuation or intimation about a person or thing, especially of a disparaging or a derogatory nature. It can also be a remark or question, typically disparaging (also called insinuation), that works obliquely by allusion. In the latter sense, the intention is often to insult or accuse someone in such a way that one's words, taken literally, are innocent.
