Woman Finds $36,000 in Miami Beach, Reports It to Police

What would you do if you found a bagful of $36,000 in sweet green cash sitting alone in Miami Beach? Would you swipe it? Would you immediately treat yourself to a shopping spree on Lincoln Road? Would you turn it in but keep a few thousand as a finder's fee?

If those ideas sound good to you, well, sorry, you're morally inferior to Rachel Castillo.

Castillo works as a drink server at the Miami Beach Golf Course. January 20, customers alerted her to an unattended bag. She opened it to discover $36,000 in cash. That's close to what she makes in a year. But she also found the ID of a 76-year-old man.

According to WSVN, Castillo contacted Miami Beach police immediately to report the found cash. Police located the man, who resides in an assisted-living facility and might have a medical condition. They're still working on returning the money to him.

Though Castillo could have doubled her income by discreetly pocketing the cash, she doesn't regret doing the right thing.

"I'm a Christian, and the Bible says, 'Do not steal, do not lie,' you know, all these things, and if you do what's right, if you live the right way, you'll be taken care of. I believe I'll be taken care of... if you do what's right," she told WSVN.

I would of held on to it and waited to see if someone would come looking for it or something if not after about a week then i would keep it...cause you know if someone miss placed it they would be around looking and asking or even go to the news maybe if it was not drug money...other than that if you gave to police and no one came forward for it then they would just keep it...so yea i would if no one came forward about it.....GOD works in mysterious ways could of been made to happen that way

She found the money back in JANUARY!  The bag had the guy's ID in it, and "They're still working on returning the money to him."  Yeah, you can be sure they're working real hard on this case!  Sounds like it's gone cold.  If this woman wanted to do the right thing, she should have NEVER called the police!  When I find a wallet, credit card or whatever, I NEVER trust the item to a third party.

It's only right to turn the money in.....but the cheap-o's should have given her a few hundred bucks for her time and effort. I hope that old coot and his relatives loose that money again....and this time loose it for a few months before it's returned.

Its probably drug money. Or traceable. That amount of cash isn't accidentally dropped without noticing.

She probably thought it was too good to be true. She most likely thought it was a setup. Who's finds 36Gs??? Plus the fact that they alerted her to the bag had her thinking twice

It's CASH! If you turn it in, how the hell will they know who the rightful owner is anyway!? Should have kept it!

What if god wanted her to have that money. What if the old man was gonna use that money for bad things?

you must not need 36,000 if you leave it laying around. I hope she never says God doesn't answer prayers......

she was alerted it was there by golfers and it had an ID inside, of course she returned it. now, if it had been laying somewhere and only I found it and there was no ID or clue who it belonged to then yeah maybe I may keep it :)

In this case there were witnesses so I'd probably pocket some and return the rest.

First of all, if you find that much money on a beach it has to be contained in something. Does the outside of this container say "Here's $36,000"? How do you know how much it is? You have to count it. Do you do that in a public place like the beach? I would not! Would you susoect that it's a drug payment of some kind? I would. Do you think the person that is supposed to get this payment might be armed and watching you ? I would run to get out of view and watch for a very long time. Then, probably call the police on my cell phone if nobody came. After all, people who know you will think somethings different and want to know if you spend more than what they think you can afford. Your own friends might report you to the authorities or worse yet the owner of the money could be searching for you!

Um, it's not stealing if somebody left it there.

@TitoCaneca If it has some sort of paper work or ID to the casing/bag carrying the money. Yes it would be considered stealing, since it was never returned or reported.
