Kaitlyn Hunt, Florida High Schooler, Arrested and Expelled for Having a Teenage Girlfriend

freekate.jpg
It was modern-day puppy love until police got involved.

Kaitlyn Hunt, an 18-year-old senior at Sebastian River High School in Indian River County, had been dating a 15-year-old girl through most of the school year, but when she turned 18 the other girl's parents called police and had Hunt charged with sex crimes.

Hunt's mother believes the other parents' disapproval with her daughter's sexuality might be to blame.

Hunt's mother had known and approved of the relationship for a while. Hunt had previously dated boys, so Hunt's mother was originally caught off guard, but wasn't upset when her daughter began dating another girl.

Mom was, however, surprised when police arrested her daughter and charged her with "lewd and lascivious battery." See, now that Hunt was 18, any physical relationship with the girl was illegal. Hunt and her family were originally told the arrest would not affect Hunt's schooling. But the girlfriend's parents then petitioned the school board to remove Hunt from the school (she is attending an alternative high school and will still graduate, however).

Hunt's mother then decided to take her case to Facebook:

On Saturday February 16th our families world was shattered and our daughters nightmare begun. The police came to our home and arrested my daughter, put her in hand cuffs and we had no idea why. They refused to tell us anything at first because she had turned 18. Kate was ripped out of our arms, terrified, crying hysterically. My younger daughter was there at the time, my husband and myself, we were mortified. They finally told us she was being arrested on "probable cause". I asked them probable cause of what, they said sexual battery on a person 12-16 years old. My heart dropped, I knew then that it had to have been her girlfriend's parents. These people never came to us as parents, never tried to speak to us, didn't try to get the school involved to speak to us and tell us they had a problem with the girls dating, not one single word. Instead, they set out their vengeance and had my child arrested on FELONY charges. The nightmare continued. Kate was bailed out and sat in front of a Judge. He told her she could continue going to school, but was to have no contact with her girlfriend. I went to the school and spoke to them, let them know what was going on, I wanted to make sure there was no issues or problems. It is Kate's senior year, she only had a few months until graduation and we wanted her to finish. The school was very supportive, they all know and loved Kate. They told us that the other girls parents had already come in and wanted Kate to be expelled, they told them no, they wouldn't do that. The parents didn't like that, so that petitioned the court and asked the judge to remove Kate from school, even though the Judge already ruled Kate could continue school. We sat in front of the Judge again, and the judge ruled yet again that Kate could continue going to school, he didn't feel like Kate was any threat at all. Those parents wouldn't give up. They were out to destroy my daughter, they feel like my daughter "made" their daughter gay. They are bigoted, religious zeolites that see being gay as a sin and wrong, and they blame my daughter. Of course I see it 100% different. I don't see or label these girls as gay. They are teenagers in high school experimenting with their sexuality, all teens do it in one form or another. They are teens, its healthy and normal. And even if their daughter is gay, who cares, she is still their daughter. But, the fight continued. the parents fought dirty, we pushed back and tried everything we could. I went to the school board with not one but two orders from Indian River County Judges saying Kate could continue going to school, but the school board sided with the parents, and expelled my daughter. Kate was forced to go to the alternative school.

Hunt now faces felony charges as an adult, though the State Attorney's Office has offered a plea deal that would punish her with two years of house arrest followed by a year of probation.

However, in addition to the Facebook group , a Change.org petition is now urging the State Attorney's Office to halt prosecution.

I am very concerned due to the fact if this was a young man he would be branded for life. Why, if this young lady is a girl should she be treated any different than a young man. Funny thing is when it is a young man sometimes the girl lies about there age. and that does not matter to the court. Her parents should be ashammed of themselves for knowing and allowing this. This is not about being homosexual. It is about why should one sex be prosecuted but not the other. It was not the parents of the young girl that can prosecute the 18 year old it is up to the local government. Seriously, what is wrong with people nowadays. That the are so ignorant to allow this from there children. Why was this mother so ignorant to let her. Daughter continue such a relationship that would brand her daughter for life. Maybe ,the mother should be the one in truly not the daughter. Shme on he....

All kids DO NOT experiment that way and every parent should not be for what they were doing. If the younger girl's parents did not approve of it then they have that right. The same rules apply. I have seen this happen to many males in the neighborhood and if they want equality it has to be in all things. Whether good or bad.

We can say all we want about if it was a guy with a younger girl, but we all know this had nothing to do with an 18 year old girl with a 15 year old girl, this had to do with it being two girls and homophobia. I also want to say if it was an 18 year old boy and 15 year old boy, the comments would be a little different too.

Stay out of people's lives??? LOL What does that mean. Were they both grown? Coming up I have seen this happen to many males when they are dealing with Younger women. Equality right? When you want something you take the good with the bad.

Hey, the law is the same for dykes and fairies as it is for everyone else. If you do the underage child, you deserve to go to prison. The difference in maturity from age 15 to 18 is like a million years.

Doesn't Florida have a 4 years law? Many states have this in place to protect students like this. We shouldn't be persecuting high schoolers for dating.

how do they intend to prove it? I somehow doubt that the 15 year old is going to testify against her girlfriend.

She's on the hook, not because she's a deviant, but because she was woefully ignorant (or dismissive) of the law.

This is silly stuff. Using a technically to arrest this girl is not right and may cause the 15-years-old girl to hate her mother for the rest of her life. People need to understand that humans are sexual beings and very complex specimens. The news is flowing. http://t.co/nFk8F3BhLA

This is the most messed up story I ever heard. The girlfriends parents need to be sued for pain and suffering. They deliberately ruined this girl's life for no reason. Not cool

The action take by the parents of the 15 yr old girl is simply wrong. The 18 yr should be adjudicated and while some of make a valid point that this happens to heterosexual couples in the same situations it doesn't justify her arrest or prosecution. Unjust treatment does not become just when it inflicted upon different sexualities or ethnicities.

People shouldnt be dating til 18 anyways. Ever heard of 16 and pregnant? I guess you have to obey the rules whether you're gay or not. I think charges like this are fair 15 is too young whethet you're straight or not.

The same thing happened in Miami about 8 years ago. Some people should not be able to have children. Ignorant, closed minded fools actually believe that they are Christians. What part of Christ's message of love and acceptance did you miss?

This exact thing happened to a friend of my daughter. Marked her friends record forever! Stupid, shallow parents.

Equal Rights = Equal Responsibilities Under the Law. You can't have it both ways. Males are prosecuted for this all the time. Welcome to EQUALITY...

The law should be applied equally. She could get a job with the IRS, then the law would be irrelevant.

@Pebbles333 I'm more than willing to bet that isn't her actual facebook page. Her true page is probably private thanks to all the crazy media attention this is no doubt getting her, and if the school "knows and loves her", it sounds like she's a pretty good kid. Most likely that "facebook page" is one created by someone who wants to further add to the malicious smear campaign her girlfriend's parents started.

@CheckpointCharlie73 How many straight 18 year olds  been arrested  at Sebastian River HS in the last 10 years for the same charge??

hs2938
hs2938

@animefashiondes Most states do but Florida does not.   I checked with three high schools in my area, two with over a 1,000 students to see if anyone had ever been arrested for having sex with a minor while both were in school  Bottom line none.

@Michael Loree Reportedly, she was interviewed by police for hours -- her own admissions will box in any testimony she gives.

I assume you waited until you were 18 to have any form of an emotional or sexual relationship, correct?

@proptart333 Don't bring Christ into this, this behavior was scarcely thought about at the time. You obviously must not have a young teen daughter, do you?

@ThomasT By the way, this isn't a "gay" issue.....although the article and the girl's parents are characterizing it as such. We don't know the motivations of the other girl's parents....perhaps they would have done this to a male too.

ThomasT

@ThomasT

@ivxx Yeah, where were the FEMALES to defend the MALES who have been prosecuted for this FOR DECADES AND DECADES???? Where were they??? I guess the law is ONLY unjust when it affects them!!! Females have used this law to torture and punish males now they don't like it when the tables are turned on them, eh? Like I said......WELCOME TO EQUALITY (both for females and gays)....

ivxx
ivxx

@ThomasT Yes males are hit with this all the time.. but this case shouldn't used as a way to rub "equality" in the face of women. We should realize that statutory rape legislation is way too broad and has resulted in males who are not sex offenders to be treated as such..

Pebbles333
Pebbles333

I bet you are correct. But, I think it is not fair that she should be treated any different than a male. Her mother knew. Why did she not protect her daughter. That is just wrong.

@Pebbles333 Protect her from what? Can it even be proven they had sex? Charges can only really stand when there has been sexual contact, but I doubt the girls do anything in front of either set of parents. Her girlfriend's parents seem very manipulative, they didn't even give warning that they didn't approve. If I was upset with who my daughter was dating, I sure as hell would be very vocal with her and her partner, as well as the other parents. Did any f that happen?
