Kiera Wilmot's Failed Science Experiment Brings Out the Racism

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. Today, Luke wants to see justice for Kiera Wilmot.

In Bartow, Florida, public school and law enforcement officials are committing a horrible injustice against an exceptionally gifted African-American teenager. By all accounts, 16-year-old Kiera Wilmot is a model honors student. She has good grades and has a perfect behavior record. She's not a kid who skips classes, fights her classmates and teachers, or pulls fire alarms for kicks.

The morning of April 22, before her first class, Kiera's scientific curiosity got the best of her when she mixed drain cleaner and aluminum foil inside a plastic bottle near a gazebo on the east side of Bartow High School. The reaction created a small explosion that popped the top off and produced some smoke. No one was hurt, and no damage was caused.

Yet assistant school principal Dan Durham, Polk County Schools police officer Gregory Rhoden, and Polk County assistant state attorney Tammy Glotfelty treated Wilmot like a suicide bomber. The poor girl was shackled in front of her peers and hauled off to the juvenile detention center on criminal charges of possession/discharge of a weapon on school grounds and discharging a destructive device. She's been expelled and will be tried as an adult. This is all because she conducted a science project that is no different from making liquid erupt from the top of a model volcano.

Even if Wilmot beats the charges, she now has a record that will wreck her future. She'll have to get a diploma through an expulsion program. No Ivy League school will give her chance. Thanks to Polk County Public Schools and the justice system, Wilmot will be lumped in with real criminals for the rest of her life.

Wilmot's ordeal has rallied thousands of supporters on internet sites like Reddit and from science teachers around the country. However, her story still hasn't garnered mainstream media attention or the outrage generated by George Zimmerman's killing of unarmed Miami Gardens teen Trayvon Martin last year.

Black, white, Hispanic, Asian, and every ethic group in the United States should be circling the wagons for Wilmot. Her plight should remind us that we have a long way to go before children of all races are treated fairly and equally.

I think sod companies in Minot Nd would still give her a chance. Its a bit ridiculous that children are so strongly prosecuted.

Start protesting at the houses of these school officials! Do everything you can within the law to make their lives miserable.

Luke I bet you the people who did that to her were democrats you SAMBO keep supporting the Democratic Party, and that what will happen to you, you forgot about the people in Win-Wood and all of the other areas. Everything is Black Racism to you. Meanwhile the democrats keep putting our people in chains by giving them handouts and stuff like that. All the hood rats that would kill you or me without thinking about it are riding with cars with 22-inch rims, slinging, getting food stamps, and tearing down our communities and you do nothing. Keep liking the master’s boots. SAMBO Don’t worry we going to protest every event that you are at SAMBO.

Re: "No Ivy League school will give her chance" -- I predict that within the next five years, at least one such school will change its policy so that a criminal record will not be an insurmountable barrier to admittance. Also, that the rest will follow suit within the next ten.

Not that I have any evidence that this will happen; I just want something to be optimistic about.

Teachers and Administrators sometimes have really twisted reactions.

They had this girl SWAT teamed for what is essentially the Mentos experiment.

When an 18 year old graduate shot his 15 year old girlfriend at their High School, the first thing a nearby teacher did was console the poor weeping murderer!

School employees do not seem to have the mental or emotional capacity to deal with real life situations.

Here is the TRUTH per law enforcement:
===
Bartow police Officer Greg Rhoden stated in his report she mixed toilet bowl cleaner and aluminum foil in an empty 8 ounce water bottle.

"It just blew the top off the bottle," he said Monday. "It didn't fracture the bottle, but the gas that built up inside it pushed the plastic out so it looks deformed."
=== (per a Lakeland Ledger article).

This was NOT a bomb!

I guess if you drop a water-balloon "bomb" from the top of an Empire State Building, you might hurt someone. But it is not a bomb.

And I guess if you held the 8 ounce plastic bottle in your hands close to your face, some of the cleaner could splash into your eye. So could running with an open container of toilet cleaner on school grounds, risking a splash.

Pretending that Kiera exploded a bomb is an insult to all those people killed and maimed in Boston and other tragedies.

From the article in the Miami Newtimes, "On 7 a.m. on Monday, the 16 year-old mixed some common household chemicals in a small 8 oz water bottle on the grounds of Bartow High School in Bartow, Florida. The reaction caused a small explosion that caused the top to pop up and produced some smoke. No one was hurt and no damage was caused" No evidence that this was a bomb or her intention was to bomb anything. Get a grip is right.

i remember being in elementary school, we put vinegar in a bottle, dropped a napkin full of baking soda and corked it. Then we would watch the cork pop off and try and record the height... i guess me and the rest of the 3rd graders and teachers were guilty of discharging a bomb on school grounds as well...

And I'll say this, we all make mistakes, granted, but in this day and age when someone makes a bomb and brings it to school, you'd better do something about it. It's a good thing no one got hurt.

Assuming this all true, it's pretty fucked up and should be brought to people's attention.

@rozumbrada This is the disease of laws gone wild. Did you know the Feds consider classic consumer fireworks like M-80s or Cherry Bombs to be Explosives just like if someone illegally possessed a stick of dynamite! The power hungry to power mad bureaucrats make normal, law abiding citizens criminals by simply changing the "rules" or their interpretation of the law. Increasingly schools have become the cops, using the police like their personal brute squad.

@drakemallard So a principal is an (alleged) criminal and tries to narc out the kid who exposed her PUBLIC arrest photo. Luckily the cops would have nothing to do with it.
