Miami Named One of America's "Least Fit" Cities

Categories: Survey Says

For all the emphasis Miami places on looks, apparently as a city we aren't spending nearly enough time in the gym. According to the annual American Fitness Index, Miami ranks in the bottom ten of major American cities when it comes to keeping that booty in shape.

The AFI, compiled by the American College of Sports medicine, takes into account "health behaviors including smoking, exercise, obesity rates, chronic health problems and access to health care" according to USA Today. Factors like "availability of parks, recreational facilities, walking trails and farmers' markets" are also considered.

Out of the top 50 metro areas, the Miami area (which includes Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach) came in a disappointing 42nd. Oklahoma City came in 50th, while Minneapolis-St.Paul took the top spots.

The report could only find three good things to say about Miami: there's not a lot of people with asthma here, we have a high number of swimming pools per capita and a lot of rec centers. Just about everything else could use improvement. We have higher rates of diabetes, coronary heart disease, angina and mental health problems than other cities. The report also suggests we could use more urban park land, farmer's markets, dog parks, tennis courts and even golf courses.

The report found that 24.4 percent of residents in the Miami metro area are obese compared to a target goal of 21.3 percent. Just 49.2 percent of us are considered to be in excellent or very good health. They found that 15.1 percent of South Floridians smoke, and only 73.5 percent have health insurance.

Counting in the hundreds of thousands of old retired people kinda skews those numbers don't you think?

Look at all the fat latins and the stinking illegals. Food stamps keep them fat and healthy.

It's the grossly overrated weather and the absence of walkable urban neighborhoods. Miami is SO damn hot, humid and rainy for so much of the year that people actually spend far LESS time outside than they do up north. And, yes, I've lived in both. Combine the shitty, oppressive weather with the urban sprawl of South Florida and our addiction to cars and you have a ton of locals with big guts and wide berth asses.

This report isn't surprising in the least. Want to see a city with fit people? Go to San Francisco or Boston or a dozen others with cooler temperatures and more walkable streets. Not Miami.

Contrasting it to last decade when it was healthier. Miami used to have it's share of fitness nuts, they all moved when the economy tanked. They were probably a big reason the economy tanked too ? Now a days, riding a bike is the equivalent to the death penalty in Miami-Dade. Cars run people over and those are folks that stay on the sidewalks.

They have to take into account that Miami is a melting pot of cultures where being skinny is comparative to being sickly. I've had many of my friend's Cuban mother's comment on the fact that I don't eat more than one serving of their food. To them being portly is a sign of health. So this comes to no surprise to me since most of our population is hispanic.

One factor used for this index, but not mentioned is commute time, the longer the average commute per Miami resident the less time they have to exercise or eat healthy, some people might spend 1.5 hours in their car per day commuting, by the time they get home they are too tired to workout or cook a good meal
