UM Student Dino Ghilotti Killed In Early-Morning Wreck Day After Graduating

Categories: News

On Friday, Dino Ghilotti's friends and family gathered in Coral Gables to watch him walk the stage at the University of Miami's graduation. Today, they'll gather again at a Coral Gables church to mourn at his funeral ceremony.

Ghilotti was killed early Sunday morning in a two-car accident a few blocks from campus.

Update: Police have identified the driver of Ghilotti's car as Allison Meyer and the other driver as Rosalia Prado.

Coral Gables police are still investigating the accident, Officer Dean Wellinghoff, a department spokesman, tells Riptide.

So far, they've released only spare details about the crash. Ghilotti was the passenger in a car driven by another UM student at 4:37 a.m. on Sunday when they collided with another car at Bird Road and San Amaro Drive.

Ghilotti was killed and both drivers were injured in the wreck, Wellinghoff says.

Ghilotti, who earned a business degree at UM, was the scion of a prominent construction family from San Rafael, California that has handled scores of multimillion dollar projects in the area, including a $20 million renovation of George Lucas' Big Rock Ranch.

"He was going to go to work at Ghilotti Construction Company in Santa Rosa," Larry Kamer, a spokesman for the Ghilotti family, tells the Marin Independent Journal. "The family is dealing with a devastating situation right now."

Wellinghoff says police may release more information about the crash later this morning; Riptide will update this post when they do.

Ghilotti's funeral is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. today at the St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Miami Herald reports, with a reception to follow at the UM Newman Alumni Center.

Update: Coral Gables PD has released a bit more information about the crash, including the identities of Meyer and Prado, the two drivers in the accident. Meyer was driving a 2008 BMW X3, which collided with Prado's 2006 BMW 521i. The police are still investigating and say that "no findings regarding the cause of this crash have been made" yet.

I don't get how small personal debates can be drawn from the death of someone but being someone who has no idea who this kid is and still being offended at this disrespect, I'm sure resonates with anyone reading this.

--I'm sorry for your sons passing this is truly terrible. My prayers are with you.

Donnie Donnie, it is possible that one day you may need someone to rescue you and it could very well be a "stupid Cuban", as you refer to them. There are a lot of Cuban doctors, Cuban fireman and Cuban policeman that may come to your aide one day without asking you for your ethnicity, religious beliefs, or your skin color. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS STUPID.

We have no more stupid people in this country. Everybody has a "learning disorder". Or he's "minimally exceptional".

“Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?”

Awful story. Poor kid was a passenger too. Driving or riding in a car in Miami should come with a surgeon general's warning.

@China Gonzalez So this is how you deal with that situation? Calling a dead man stupid? Well the only one looking stupid here is you...

@JustSad  Follow conversations before commenting. The dead man featured in this article was NOT called stupid. It was a reply to Donnie Donnie's comment below. Condolences to the family and friends.. he's truly described as having been a great guy.
