Fox News on Trayvon Martin: "You Could Probably Kill Somebody With Skittles"

With George Zimmerman's trial starting in Central Florida this week for the murder of Miami-area teen Trayvon Martin, the controversial case has rocketed back to the headlines. Fox News, however, appears to have taken a novel approach to its coverage of the tragedy, and recently invited a guest on who claims, "You could probably kill somebody with Skittles."

Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman, grew suspicious of Martin as he was walking through the Stanford, Florida neighborhood where his father's girlfriend lived. Zimmerman followed Martin and eventually got into a confrontation with the teen. The exact details of what happened next are still under debate, but Zimmerman ended up fatally shooting Martin. Martin was carrying only a bag of Skittles candy and a can of Arizona iced tea.

Yesterday morning, Fox News invited on Doug Burns, a former federal prosecutor, to discuss the case. He had a bizarre take on events.

From Mediate:

"I know everybody keeps sarcastically saying about the Skittles," Burns said, perhaps mocking those who use Skittles as a symbol of Martin's innocence. "You could probably kill somebody with a Skittle," he joked. Taking his idea one step further, Burns said, "The thing is, yeah, you're spinning a lot of hypotheticals, and you could break a bottle of iced tea, right, with the jagged edge, and you could kill somebody with it."

Of course, the thing is Martin had an aluminum can of Arizona iced tea.

So that shoots down that argument.

The fact that someone can be so cynical and crack jokes on national television about the death of a 17-year-old boy is something we cannot explain. Dude, when even the Fox News anchor is arguing with your point of view, maybe it's time to shut it.

Why wasn't Zimmerman's DNA found on the tea container? That would have been my weapon of choice if some nut was stalking me

Cocksuckers Times trying to draw attention away from the fact that some thug messed with the wrong guy and got what he deserved. Zimmerman should be applauded for looking out for and protecting his neighborhood, not have to endure this BS trial, when he had every right to defend himself.

"these assholes, they always get away.

The dispatcher asked Zimmerman if he was following him. When Zimmerman answered, "yeah," the dispatcher said, "We don't need you to do that." Zimmerman responded, "Okay

“According to a records search on George, he was previously arrested for domestic violence, resisting an officer without violence and most shockingly, resisting an officer with violence — a felony charge that surely could have landed him in prison.

So how was someone with a violent past including that of battery against an officer able to carry a 9 mm handgun

Logic dictates that the person WITHOUT the gun is more likely the one who would be calling for help” Why would the armed person be screaming and yelling "I'm begging you"? Sounds more like something an unarmed person would do when a gun is pointed at them!!

Zimmerman says Martin had been on top of him, slamming his head against the ground and smothering his mouth and nose with his hand and arm when he grabbed his gun from a holster on his waist before Martin could get it. He shot the teenager once in the chest.Trayvon Martin's DNA Not Found On George Zimmerman's Gun George Zimmerman's was the only DNA that could be identified on the grip of the gun used to fatally shoot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

“George Zimmerman Deserves Jail Time For Lying About His Finances

jailhouse tapes of Zimmerman talking to his wife, Shelly, about the amount in his online defense fund. Ever since the judge ordered Zimmerman back to jail, donations to Zimmerman’s online defense fund have begun to significantly increase from the original $1,000 a day the fund was receiving.”

The only question I have is will there be riots and looting if GZ is found not guilty.

-be sure not to be in the getto if that happens.

I'm still trying to understand how someone can self-appoint themselves as neighborhood watchman...

I don't understand WHY Trayvon came BACK when at one point he had significant distance between himself and Zimmerman so WHY DIDN'T TRAYVON JUST KEEP RUNNING AWAY ?

CERTAINLY Zimmerman was in no shape to run after and catch Trayvon ....... so why did Trayvon COME BACK TO THE SCENE ?

IF Trayvon doesn't come back THEN the event doesn't escalate AND he doesn't get shot

QED: Trayvon came back when he should have just kept running away = period

Everyone seems to forget that Trayvon made the first move in the Attack. It should be a lesson to everyone. That being the "tough guy" isn;t always the upper advantage. I see that you really do not care about his past but you will delve into zimmermans past. Delve into the past of both.

Quick question... If you just glance at someone do you instantly get a transcript of their criminal history? (Protip: Unless you're wearing Google glass the Answer is No). Regardless of Trayvons past Zimmerman had no reason to make the assumptions he did, and because of Zimmerman's following actions Trayvon is now dead. Period.

Skittles a weapon, wow that is reaching....

I could care less about his or Zimmerman's actions from the past. What is relevant is the actions that occurred that specific night. That is what should be judged in court.

Please stop this fake portrayal of the boy. He was on the wrong track.

-there were zero marks on TM,  why would someone not getting hurt yell for help?

not to mention the eye witnesses, saying the guy with the red shirt was yelling.

@drakemallard the DV was before he was married.  what 4 years earlier?

he had a CW permit... you don't get 1 with a DV conviction.

@Cary Gonzalez   he was not, that was the media. (again).

he was a crime watch leader or captain.    crime watch is supported by Local PD's

and the reason for the crime watch was....  some  black youth's kept breaking into houses.

ps: we all know that it was actually a watermelon drink, and skittles.  -for 10,000 dollars, what are those 2 ingredients used to make?   (+  Robitussin RM)

@Felix Cheshire Thompson

Don't we all wish things were so simple, but of course they're not. Nothing is.

Of course, you simplified things only to fit your own opinion.

I can do the same.

1- If Trayvon had stayed in school he would be alive. Period.

2- If Trayvon had called the police he would be alive. Period.

3- If Trayvon had walked home he would be alive. Period.

4- If Trayvon's parents had done their job he would be alive. Period.

5- If Trayvon had kept his hands to himself he would be alive. Period.

See? It's so easy to simplify things.

But then again, things are never black or white. (No pun intended)

There's plenty of shades of gray in  between.
