Happy Hurricane Season! Florida Might Get Hit By a Named Storm This Week

Categories: Category 5

This morning's radar: Hi there, hurricane season.
It's the first Monday of hurricane season, which means all across the Sunshine State thousands are heading into work with the vague feeling they've forgotten something important (PSSST! Hurricane supplies, people. Specifically: vodka and board games.).

Well, here's a kick in the ass to get that kit together: Storms brewing in the Gulf of Mexico this morning might just coalesce into the season's first named storm headed right for Florida.

A broad patch of thunderstorms has cropped up off Florida's Southwest coast this morning, stretching down past Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico.

At the moment, high-level wind shear is keeping the storms from getting too organized, but forecasters say that could change by mid-week.

"There are signs that the wind shear will lessen enough for a broad area of disturbed weather to attempt to organize into a tropical depression over the central Gulf of Mexico at midweek," writes Kristina Pydynowski, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.

If the storm does develop, it would be named Andrea and could pass over Florida as early as Wednesday.

Either way, Miami's in for a crappy first week of hurricane season. Forecasters are calling for a 70 percent chance of strong storms today and tomorrow and expect the rest of the week to be soaked as well.

Hurricane season! Now we remember why all those Canadians have already put up the shutters and fled back to Quebec.

I'm parking in Miami Beach so I can collect the insurance money for my flooded car.  Hurry, spaces are filling up fast around Alton Road.

I lived through Andrew and the season a few years ago when we had four in a row with Wilma kicking our ass. It shouldn't be taken lightly. That said, the same article comes out every year

Laughable at best: "There are signs that the wind shear will lessen enough for a broad area of disturbed weather to attempt to organize into a tropical depression over the central Gulf of Mexico at midweek" The FL weather reporters cant get it right when there IS some sort of storm, now its time to speculate and get it even more wrong... or who knows they might actually get it right for the first time with some random lucky guesses? seems to work better than whatever other systems they have been using for the longest. so cool, lets put it on the news all week and make sure walmart and kmart sell out again this year for another false alarm. THE END OF THE WORLD IS NEAR BUY AS MUCH CANNED FOODS AND WATER AS YOU CAN! OH AND PLYWOOD!
