The Silent Threat: Canadian Snowbirds Could Stay Longer in Florida Under Immigration Bill

Categories: Politicks

As the U.S. Senate's immigration overhaul has inched forward, shepherded by our own Sen. Marco Rubio, South Floridians have hotly debated the most contentious issues: English-speaking requirements for immigrants, long wait periods for citizenship, a ban on LGBT benefits.

But it seems we've ignored a silent threat tucked into the bill for too long: an extra two months a year for Canadian snowbirds to hang out in South Florida.

That's right, America. If the Senate has its way, those Quebecois bikers flooding your favorite beachside tiki bar with their poutine and their Fin Du Monde will be allowed to stay up to eight months at a time in the U.S.

Canadians can currently travel to the U.S. without a visa, but can only stay for six months minus a day per year.

Dear Marco Rubio: These people, many of them do not even speak English as their first language. Do you realize this? They still pledge allegiance to the Queen. THE QUEEN. Not to mention that the mayor of their biggest city allegedly smokes crack cocaine and the mayor of Quebec's biggest town was just arrested this morning for corruption.

These are the people you want to give free rein to roam our beaches and corrupt our children with their "parliamentary democracy?"

Sure, half a million of them own property in Florida and they pumped about $4 billion into the economy last year. Plus there was that whole unfortunate incident where our governor accidentally pissed off the whole country with his Geneva Convention-violating driver's license laws, so we probably have some bridges to rebuild.

But is this about money, Marco Rubio? Or is this about freedom? Think about it.

Um if you knew anything you would know that the French in Canada do not pledge anything to the queen of England, which is why they were deported in 1755. Look it up. The French do not care about the Queen.

Not sure who reviews articles on this website but frankly this dude Tim should not be published. One stupidity after another in his article, not to mention the clichés used.

Hey Tim, get you facts straight:

- Quebecers don't pledge any allegiance to the Queen, you're a moron and probably heard about Quebec from Wikipedia or some TV. If you would spend some time researching before opening your mouth, you'll know that in this province the Queen and monarchy in general means ZERO. Even the national holiday called Victoria Day (May 24th), in Quebec is re-branded as Fete des Patriotes (Patriots Day).

- Quebecers do speak English, some top English universities are in Montreal, IT, pharma, aerospace and R&D are quite present, 90% of commercial trade is with US. Each weekend teenagers between 18 and 21 from Vermont and NY do come and party in Montreal, and we gladly take their money. In short, yes, English is still quite present, despite what separatist would want, but Quebecers do speak English, not so sure about your overwhelmingly Hispanics but that's another story.

- your rant about the mayor of Toronto and drug usage is moronic too, your President smokes or used to smoke marijuana, what's your point mate? Florida lives of the drug trade, is not like you're from Iceland and make a living of fish industry. Seriously, you're complaining about drugs from Toronto but can't see your own backyard, get your eyes checked, fast!

- what's wrong with a parliamentarian democracy? Last time I've checked US has 2 houses as well and Congress is as infective as our Parliament, really no point there. Is not like Quebecers care too much for the House of Commons in Ottawa and the federal portion. They give a rat's ass while down in Florida about stupid politics.

- you're from Florida and you're complaining about bikers, seriously? This way of life is typical of US, riding a Harley on Route 66 free of everything used to be part of the American dream for some. I'm not sure if you can't afford a bike or you're just complaining of those bearded/leather wearing guys or just jealous of their womens. Seems you're just sad, a sad little man, accent on little!

So 2 extra months for Canadians and Quebecers vacation down South is really a non issue mate, ZERO! Get a life, get a real job, leave blogging while you can, it's not for you, you're just an ignorant moronic and idiotic prick with some racist and nationalist agenda, same as our retarded separatists from Quebec.

Marco Rubio and  Mario Diaz-Balart,leana Ros-Lehtinen. ted cruz/other cubans have credibility on immigration issues when they advocates that immigrants from other countries are treated the same as those from their homeland – Cuba. So either grant automatic legal status as soon as they set foot on American soil, or make Cubans go through the same process as any other immigrant. Until then, just another hypocrite.

There should not be a "wet foot, dry foot" policy. Cubans should be subject to the same immigration requirements as any other would be immigrant. No special treatment.

You should be thanking those Canadians staying for the two extra months. They are after all pumping money into your sinking economy. You will also be hard pressed to find a Canadian that actually wants to corrupt your children with Canadian political values. We are some of the least patriotically people in the world. I'm afraid America has corrupted their own children-perhaps some responsibility and action should be taken for that-instead of blaming Canadians. You would do well to educate yourself on what you are writing about. No one likes a person where the strength and narrowness of their opinions fail to match the amount of knowledge they have on the matter. Get a clue.

The proposed immigration legislation does not have a "ban on LGBT benefits."  The proposed legislation, like the present laws, are gender neutral and refer to "spouses," not "wives" or "husbands."  Adding LGBT provisions to the proposed legislation would be misplaced.  That is a DOMA issue, not a DHS issue.

@me002 No, they were deported to America and are now Cajuns.  Some French hid and did not get deported.
