Barack Obama Needs to Raise Money to Nail Sorry Black Politicians

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke has some advice for the President.

While it was nice to see President Barack Obama finally address the nation about his blackness in the wake of George Zimmerman's acquittal in the killing of Trayvon Martin, the commander-in-chief needs to go much further. Saying "Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago" is not enough.

Obama should crank up his political fundraising machine -- the one that raised close to a half-billion dollars to get him re-elected -- to set up a super PAC that confronts the inequality African-Americans continue to face in the 21st Century.

If Obama is serious about stopping white vigilantes from claiming self-defense when they kill unarmed black teenagers, the prez needs to call up his boy Jay-Z and ask for some of the profits from Magna Carta... Holy Grail to get rid of politicians responsible for Stand Your Ground laws. Put me in charge of the hit list.

I'll start with U.S. Rep Frederica Wilson, a South Florida African-American pol who voted for the controversial law in 2005. Wilson, who at the time was a state senator, now claims she would have voted differently because she never imagined someone would invoke Stand Your Ground to kill an unarmed 17-year-old black boy.

In the wake of Martin's death, she's been front and center at rallies, demanding Tallahassee repeal or make changes to the measure they voted for. Wilson has been demanding that the U.S. Department of Justice file civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

That won't wash her hands of Trayvon's blood. She didn't have the backbone to vote against the law because she was afraid of taking on the National Rifle Association and its lobbyists.

The African-American community can't count on politicians like Wilson. The people who represent us are owned by special interests. They get a phone call from the lobbyists who raise money from people and businesses that don't live in the African-American community telling them what to do. They are afraid the lobbyists will run someone against them If they don't do what the lobbyists tell them to do. And the lobbyists who do look like us are controlled by the white lobbyists.

That is why no one in Tallahassee respects African-American legislators. They don't accomplish anything because of their dependence on the people who raise money for their political campaigns. Without that cash, they have no money to buy the absentee ballots that will win them re-election.

That's what Norman Braman was trying to accomplish by going after the county commissioners last year. He wants to buy his own black politicians to do what he says. We need to demand that our black politicians don't take money from people who don't live in or don't have a stake in the black community. That is when we will see real change happen.

Until then, it will be business as usual.

Correction: This column originally reported that Sen. Chris Smith voted for Stand Your Ground. In fact, he voted against it as a member of the House of Representatives in 2005.

Greetings Miami New Times Editor & Uncle Luke, as a fan of both I have to respectfully disagree with Uncle Luke's comments on President Obama's Zimmerman verdict speech and here's why; Luke's criticism of Obama is an indictment on himself due to most Hip Hop artists and fans seeing his accomplishments to Hip Hop as he see's Obama Presidency. The Truth of the matter is that, President Obama's Zimmerman Verdict speech will go down in history as did King's "I Have A Dream" speech. What Uncle Luke doesn't realize is that both he and President Obama conquered systems/industries with some of the most outrageous but outstanding strategies. Uncle Luke entered an industry for RAPPERS but solidified his place in Hip Hop history as a GRUNTER. Obama entered his candidacy for President as a black man and will solidify his place in American History as a GREAT MAN. When you leave out the facts that President Obama has allocated funding for the various disparities Uncle Luke criticized him about; the breakdown was not on the Federal Government, it's on the State Government. Like his criticism of President Obama, some would say Uncle Luke's legacy as an entertainer is genius but others would say his literacy as an entrepreneur is anus...

as for the AFRICAN-AMERICAN community relying on BLACK politicians that didn't work with marion barry or rev jackson's son or allen west or colin powel or in detroit or in chicago

believe it or not it would be a WHITE OR HISPANIC that the BLACKs can get best results in aligning themselves with,  a chance BLACKs missed back in the 60's when they could have allied with the JEWs, and most likely will miss again today

the MAIN problem is of ALL ELIGIBLE BLACK voters only a few actually VOTE.......i know voting APATHY runs through ALL groups but it is historically the LOWest among BLACKs

i don't think BLACK votes are a major worry for the N R A

....................."they were afraid of taking on the National Rifle Association and its lobbyists."

this is the entire issue in summary,  the N R A,  as nothing will get done otherwise

i personally think you have a better chance to unionize WAL-MART than defeating the enactment of N R A sponsored legislation but okay by me go ahead and good luck

O.k opinion.  Kind of bland. If you read it as a single article, it's ok. If you read it as a weekly article, and place it in relationship with the other articles that Puke writes, then it is more of the same crap. It's a continuation of a constant rant against the white man, and another excuse to blame someone else...again. Puke never writes about the disproportionate amount of murders and felonies that blacks commit. Puke never writes about black on black crime. How many kids are killed, or shot in drive by shootings in Chicago, Compton, Watts, Detroit, Miami, Camden? Go back and continue to write about Trayvon. Let's count the murders this week that occur in the ghetto. Why don't you write an article to Sharpton or Jesse and ask them when they are going to visit those cities and call out the black on black crime. Until then, I will still look forward to your Tuesday morning posts and I will laugh.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Pure gold below. Also, was wondering. How is it that you are going to bitch about the politicians you blindly vote into office?

I didn't vote for most of them. But someone did. And since the African American community is called a minority it does make up most of the population.

How about your community educate themselves with the ways of government and register to vote and apply that knowledge. Then things can change.

You bitching about the same racist bullshit each week, not only makes the situation ignorantly worse, but is not doing anything to educate the masses or rectify the situation.

The government is a lot like you so shouldn't you be happy?

Should politicians try to be more like you?

You always go full retard.  It never ceases to amaze me.

"...they never imagined someone would invoke "stand your ground" to kill an unarmed 17-year-old black boy."

Actually, if you had followed the case at all, stand your ground was not invoked.  Also, how do you explain Zimmerman's injuries?  If he were uninjured, then obviously he was never in fear for his life.  But the man had head injuries and was on the losing end of that confrontation.

so does that mean UNCLE LUKE isn't entitled to HIS opinion ? and as far as going up against the N R A as being the answer to GUN control, i think is proper

or else how about THOMAS JEFFERSON owned slaves, does that negate all HIS opinions and theories the same way "arrests" negate the theories and opinions of UNCLE LUKE ?

it seems to me UNCLE LUKEs "arrests" were for crimes against puritanism;  WHILE jeffersons moral crimes were crimes against HUMANITY and sins against religious ethics that all men are created equal in the eyes of GOD - no ?
