Slate: Miami Has the Worst Drivers in America, Hialeah Third

baddriver.jpg
If you ask any Miamian which city has the worst drivers, they'll say with absolutely no reservation and a strange mix of pride and disdain: "Miami. Duh." Of course, there's no agreed upon standard of how to determine the "worst" drivers. Several sites have tried. Forbes.com, for example, ranked Miami ninth last year. Other measures don't even put Miami in the top ten.

Well, today, online magazine Slate decided to put the dubious honor to rest once and for all and determined that Miami indeed has America's worst drivers and that "it's not even close." To add insult to Miami-Dade's injury, Hialeah was ranked third.

Slate's methods are pretty thorough, and it takes author Brian Palmer several paragraphs to describe his research. Essentially, though, they started with accident rates provided by Allstate Insurance, factored in things like the number of miles an average driver travels each year in each city, the number of fatal traffic accidents, drunk driving fatalities, and pedestrian strikes. Slate admits their methods could be up for debate, and they don't include common minor traffic gripes like "people not using their blinkers" or "drivers cutting across three lanes," but it's a pretty hefty look at available data.

Hialeah came in third:

The drivers of Hialeah get into a middling number of accidents, ranking 11th among the 39 candidates. But when they hit someone, they really mean it. The city finished third for fatalities. They also have a terrifying tendency to hit pedestrians.

Miami, however, took the crooked and dinged crown:

And it's not even close. First in automotive fatalities, first in pedestrian strikes, first in the obscenity-laced tirades of their fellow drivers.

Philadelphia separated the pair of South Florida cities at number two, while Tampa and Baltimore rounded out the top five.

So there you have it: Miami officially has the worst (and apparently most deadly) drivers.

If you are one of those bad drivers and need some help, earlier this year we compiled "Ten Things Miami's Terrible Drivers Need to Learn." Regrettably, we did not include "Don't kill people" on the list.

Waiting for the entire state to sink into the Atlantic--as scientists predict--or I hit the Lotto and get the frock far away from here!  I could get into soooo many car accidents here and NONE of them would ever be my fault because of obvious neglect of the other drivers. Nine out of 10 times, tailgating would be a major factor.  This would come around to bite me in the butt because insurance companies would see me as a high liability and either refuse to insure me or charge me skyrocket rates. Damn if you do. damn if you don't.

It's not funny.....this driving fiasco causes shattered families, amputated limbs and senseless deaths every single day. It makes Miami one of the most dangerous places in the USA to simply go about your daily business. I'd be lying if I didn't say it was a factor into why I moved away.

THE OTHER FACTOR here is as with ANY study - what is the MOTIVE

for an insurance carrier to point to the "problem" without offering a "solution" means on thing to the INSURED PUBLIC - rates will go UP and in MIAMI you can blame your neighbor's bad driving habits

meanwhile put too many people in too many cars ALL of them DISTRACTED on roads continually under construction in PEAK times to and from work ADD 100 degree days and a few cups of cubano coffee - and the results ARE PREDICTABLE

didn't WE ask ALLSTATE INSURANCE COMPANY to pack-up it's "ditty bag" and get out of FLORIDA after it screwed all it's customers denying proper claims filed by desperate insured people from damages of ANDREW in 1992 ? ! ?

ALLSTATE is a greedy UNreliable insurance provider known to HOLD legitimate claims until the insured suffers more damages and is FORCED to settle for MUCH LESS than they were properly covered for - it was a scam where ALLSTATE people should have been charged CRIMINALLY

most of the idiots know the cops from way back in 'Guanabacoa', so that's why they drive as such in Miami. Drive I-95 South and look how the pattern changes once past Hallandale Beach Boulevard... IT'S INSANE!! Those of us who've lived somewhere else, can attest to this driving lunacy. And don't try to label be "Anti-Cuban", please but what's the problem with losing your minds when being honked at?! Did Fidel used a "Bocinita" at Mazorra, or I didn't get the memo?!?!

YES i have studied and OBSERVED this phenomenon and can report;

1)the road conditions WEATHER-wise are almost always PERFECT (as compared to snow and ice conditions causing LONGer stopping distances with hills and blind curves requiring absolute attention - all this means you can comfortably tail-gate at 80 mph while texting and applying make-up) - so there is always a false sense of security which LULLs drivers into bad decisions

2)the sheer VOLUME and CONSTANT CONSTRUCTION leads to the inevitable mazes and formula-one style obstacle courses that INVITE a bit of WRECKlessness by too many cars in too little of a space

3)the DRIVERs have a LACK OF AWAREness of their SURROUNDINGs either due to feebleness of age or self-imposed DISTRACTIONs or OVERinflated sense of ABILITY or any combination of those three factors so and in being LATE or RUSHed and the table is set for disaster

4)our VISITORs and GUESTs find themselves consulting MAPs and GPS devises that have NO RELATION to the current road directions or uncharted deviations and discover these discrepancies typically either doing 60 mph in the wrong lane OR at green lights where they are frozen in panic

otherwise if the 25,ooo,ooo DAILY commuters of NYC had to DRIVE INto that city the results would be similar IF NOT worse

True worst drivers in Hialeah ,,back in 1972 I was riding my triumph motorcycle up 103 st  about a block west of red road  and was on the right side lane and on the right of the oil slick  which is in all lanes in the middle, when this dumb Cuban lady passes me by in my lane missing my handle bar by a few inches , I screamed at her calling her every name I could think of ,when she looked at me and said ,sory no peeke engsh,,,at that point I said to my self ,time to get rid of my motorcycle ,,now iv noticed later in life that the Haitians are by far worse then the Cubans , they pull out of a stop sign when your almost apon  them and go slow making me slow down ,,hate that....I figured out whats happening in Miami ,,as I see it Floridas sticking out into the ocean like an arm  and all these  islands like Haiti Jamica ,cuba and south America , and mexico and so on see Florida as the closest to their home lands so the migrate here ,,,when I was here in the 40s and 50s  the people from all the southern states and Europe were here and all them were excellent drivers , now we get these people who only had a donkey cart to drive  come here and in 1 day are driving here ,,,shame  shame  shame ... miss the European people and new Yorkers  as they drive aggressive and are better drivers then the donkey cart drivers ,,,there you have it   Dino still in Miami ,,,  out !

Whoever conducted this research is full of shit. There really are no purely objective methods to derive a definitive conclusion to the ineffectiveness of drivers. Forbes magazine has come the closest. Anything else is pure speculation.

Oh yeah! Thats the main reason I moved from that zoo! I love driving where I live and theres no probs on the road, no traffic jams! Problem in Miami is that the majority of its residents are a bunch of idiots! Lol

But Honestly speaking...Any of you people driven the I-4 tampa to Orlando Stretch at night? The combination of lost tourists, fast and the furious townies and the horrifically designed highway makes for a very scary ride. I once Saw TWO HELICOPTERS land like 5 miles apart from each other. I remember my immortal words "De pinga...."

the entire county, with the exception of Doral (because of its police farce, YES I WROTE FARCE!), Gables and Aventura (because of the camera system in both cities!!), has the worst drivers in the galaxy. Funny thing is that, when these brutes drive 2" north of County Line Road, become Germans, meaning, the best drivers anywhere. Other than that, everybody starting with cops, elders, the coked-out teens, those LEON Medical Center van drivers and government employees, namely County & City, drive as such because of their "Untouchable Aura."

............................not that the analysis and conclusions may not be valid - it's just that ALLSTATE has had devious and criminal motives in the PAST here in FLORIDA - and it may be MOTIVATED to stir the problems UP and reflect them in HIGHER PREMIUMs

frankd4

if it is any consolation - they bash into EACH OTHER with greater frequency than they bash into everyone else - so statistically speaking they are their own worse enemies

moreover they are losing thier young kids especially young men to the machismo of car ownership as again statistically many many of their own sons DIE unnecessarily in the male egotistical pursuit of cool doing something that is HIGH RISK

its a monster of their own creating

funny you mentioned the PD because according to the PULITZER PRIZE winning article of the SUN SENTINEL the PD are among the MAIN causes of problems IN THEIR OFF-DUTY TIME driving at excessive and dangerous speeds in NON-emergency response travel ! ! !

imagine if we didn't NEED cars

like NYC with the........... "Beaches, Sun, Good Music, Warm Winters, Beautiful People and Great Food." you mention

unfortunately our "founding fathers" were all greedy developers who MIS-used the land and created a concrete jungle of DISconnected areas based on which municipality's commissioners would require the least costly bribery and kick-back scheme and look the other way on providing the necessary essential services which we now lack
