There's a Petition to Boycott Florida Until "Stand Your Ground" Is Repealed

Right or wrong, the rest of the nation has been side-eyeing Florida ever since the George Zimmerman verdict came down. Even though the controversial "Stand Your Ground" law was not ultimately used as part of Zimmerman's defense, a new petition is circulating online in which signees claim they'll boycott Florida tourism until the law is repealed.

Here's the text of the MoveOn.org petition:

Boycott Florida tourism until the "Stand Your Ground" law is overturned. Send a message to Florida that their state is not a safe place to vacation if their citizens are able to kill anyone they deem suspicious.

Well, technically, if you see things that way then even out-of-staters are allowed to bring a gun down here and kill anyone they deem suspicious. If anything if that's what the law actually said (and it does not) then perhaps Florida could market itself as a real life "The Most Dangerous Game" experience.

Florida: Come On Down and Kill People.

Sadly, that could actually increase certain types of tourism, and that kind of scares us actually.

Not that we don't think Stand Your Ground is a horrible piece of legislation, but let's not blow things out of proportion here.

Anyway, as of blog publishing time the petition has 1,715 of 2,000 required signatures. When it reaches that goal it will be sent to Gov. Rick Scott and both houses of the Florida Legislature.

We would like to remind people that 19 other states have laws similar to our "Stand Your Ground" law, and several others have "Castle Doctrine" laws. Might want to boycott them too.

.........well after the NATION witnessed our presidential election voting problems here in FLORIDA (even HAITIs presidential election count went smoother than in FLORIDA) mitt romney finally conceded the state to obama SO that saved us the embarrassment of continuing with a screwed-up count (possibly the ONLY thing allen west am i will AGREE on is we can't count votes down here) eventhough that meant our 26 delegates didn't count in the results either (and wouldn't have mattered anyway) except when the rest of the country has concluded their counts two weeks prior it does make us look DUMB

and now DUMBer has arrived

zimmerman as an egotistical fatso wannabe cop condo-commando leader out of full metal jacket fighting machine is proof the inmates have control of the asylum here in FLORIDA

tourists come down for the sun liquor and sex - period - so most germans and canadiens won't even have heard of zimmerman

and hopefully this means the end to south beach URBAN weekend which was a giant disaster anyway

maybe NOW i'll be able to get a parking spot on hollywood beach ? ! ?

Zimmerman had a long history of violence, including a restraining order for domestic violence, felony charges of resisting arrest, and assaulting an officer (the charge was pled down to a misdemeanor and then closed; Zimmerman's dad was a magistrate at the time). He was bounced from a job as a bouncer for being too aggressive with patrons, the New York Daily News reported. And a family member accused him of a pattern of sexual molestation. He wasn't convicted of any felony charges, which could have barred him from a gun license, but in some societies, people would determine that such a history makes someone less than an ideal candidate for the right to carry around a hidden loaded weapon.

Until the Stand Your Ground law is re-examined, Florida is a state where committing murder using the right alibi and witness is completely legal.

“I am very sad and disappointed. I am concerned about Trayvon's family.
Marissa Alexander get 20 years for warning shot scare off her husband when she felt he was threatening her and zimmerman gets off for killing shooting Trayvon martin welcome to florida. This particular case am convinced that corruption and power permeate American society. Zimmerman will fall again since the evidence that he is a criminal and has a disturbed mind and his daddy won't be able to protect him next time ...

unbelievable and by that I mean believable.”

FLORIDA IS A FUCK UP STATE

that will kind of funny if somebody used stand your ground on george zimmerman

there is reasonable belief of an unlawful threat, without an obligation to retreat first.

zimmerman is NOT someone who should have had the PRIVILEDGE to have a GUN but the NRA basically guarantees that any lunatic (read ADAM LANZA)  should under the 2nd amendment have the right to ARM themselves (and then make up a story about self-defense AFTER the other guy is dead)

@Emmett Conrecode You keep telling yourself that. Me and the adequate money to afford a Florida trip will find someplace sane to go. If I'm the only one, you shouldn't care. If there are a bunch like me, maybe you should. Especially if your job depends on tourism. I the message still hasn't gotten across, maybe I'll find Florida oranges unappealing too.

@Domenico Taribo Read more of his articles.  You will be amazed that he's even employed.

@drakemallard She was found guilty because she left the scene of the altercation, grabbed a gun, then RETURNED.  She fled then went back.

@frankd4 Adam Lanza could not legally own his weapons due to his mental issues.  They were his mom's.  Why she chose to keep firearms around the house knowing she had a troubled son is what caused this tragedy.
