Univision Aired Its First Gay Telenovela Wedding This Week

With all those murderous maids, seductive priests, and double-crossing fiancés, a gay wedding would actually be one of the least dramatic things in a telenovela. Yet, until this week, Univision had never aired one.

The wedding aired as part of the runup to the finale of Amores Verdaderos, a Mexican-produced telenovela that translates to True Love. You might have to call your abuela to fill you in on exactly what is going on here, but according to the show's Wikipedia page, the main character's chef married her arch-enemy's son. Sounds kind of dramatic, but Wiki also informs us that characters on this show have been "killed in a car accident after being poisoned," "shot to death by police while attempting to kidnap Beatriz," and "mauled to death by wolves." So it's actually a pretty happy ending for the couple.

"It was the first time a gay wedding aired in a novela produced and distributed by Mexico's largest -- and notoriously conservative -- media conglomerate, Televisa (to which for years GLAAD attempted to reach out but to no avail)," GLAAD notes.

The wedding comes during a historic month for the network, whose production headquarters are in Doral. The station is expected, for the first time ever, to come out number one in the July ratings (yes, beating ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC).

But how cute is that pug in a suit jacket?

Univision and Telemundo shows with White, more light-skinned actors living the lap of luxury, all we need to do is look at popular culture: Latinos promote whiteness more than ever. They sell a world of whiteness, and have done so for decades. And that is wrong.”
