Armed Citizens Project Is Now Offering Free Shotguns to People in Florida

Categories: Crime

The Armed Citizens Project does exactly what its name implies: It hands out guns for free. Now the Texas-based nonprofit is turning its bullet-blasting beneficence on the Sunshine State.

Promising to "deter crime by empowering neighborhoods," the ACP has already begun distributing shotguns in Orlando's Sunshine Gardens neighborhood.

Two fun facts about Sunshine Gardens:
1. It's 92 percent white (in a state that is 78 percent white).
2. It's only 25 miles south of Sanford -- you know, the town where George Zimmerman killed unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.

Now, you might ask yourself: What the f--- is the sense in giving away shotguns in a place so close to a tragic and now-infamous shooting?

Could it be a thinly veiled ploy to garner national headlines so the nonprofit rakes in donations (used to buy guns, which are then handed out amid fanfare and even more donations)?

Not so, says the ACP.

mug_trayvonm.jpg
The shotgun giveaway is occurring just 25 miles from where Trayvon Martin was killed.
"Pro-gun activists have largely been content to simply fend off new potential gun control laws," says the group's website. "It is our belief that gun-rights activists must take the offensive, and actively encourage the increased presence of defensive weapons in society."

Never mind evidence that guns make countries and communities less safe, not more. Or that violent crime is at a 20-year low in Florida. The ACP wants to give you a shotgun and then see what happens to crime in your community.

"It's not one of those things when we hand a gun to someone and don't hear from them again," president Ron Ritter told CBS. "We're going to keep in touch if someone is receiving a donation."

Here's how it works.

"All participants that wish to receive a weapon, and take our training, will receive a shotgun," the website explains, adding that recipients must pass a federal background check. "There are many reasons for us to use this type of weapon, and it will be our standard weapon of use. They are easy to use, less expensive than other weapons, and effective against intruders."

What happens if one of ACP's shotguns isn't used to defend America's freedom but rather to do harm? For instance, what if the gun is stolen (as more than 600,000 are per year) and used in a crime?

"Many people have asked me if I am concerned about the potential liability that I may incur from this project. The short answer is no," the website says. "Even if, heaven-forbid, one of our weapons is misused in a manner causing injury or death, one would have to accept the premise that guns, not people, cause crime, in order to find us liable. I will not play into the hands of the anti-gun establishment. The future belongs to the bold, we must fight."

The ACP also promises to seek high-crime areas for its shotguns, so you too could soon be gripping your own deadly weapon, Miami.

Just so it doesn't get lost in the clutter, a testament to how much research was done prior to writing this article:

Where'd you get the 600,000 number from?  Made it up?

http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/press/fshbopc0510pr.cfm

"WASHINGTON – About 1.4 million firearms were stolen during household burglaries and other property crimes over the six-year period from 2005 through 2010, according to a report released today by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). This number represents an estimated average of 232,400 firearms stolen each year— about 172,000 stolen during burglaries and 60,300 stolen during other property crimes."

Oh, you got that number from "Mayors against illegal guns" who also don't cite a source.

But digging deeper, that 600,000 number appears in a paper that cites numbers from 1994: http://www.ojjdp.gov/pubs/gun_violence/sect01.html

the author of this article has no idea about where this neighborhood is located. yes it might be 25 miles from sanford where that scumbag killed trayvon martin but its about 2 miles from pine hills. (go ahead and take a second to research pine hills crime rate.. http://spotcrime.com/fl/pine+hills .. i made it easy)

crime doesnt have a race or color. ive been pistol whipped for my wallet in downtown orlando by a white guy. my ex girlfriends house was robbed by what police described as a "black male with dreads" ..the police did absolutely nothing in either case. whats the point of them being the only ones that are allowed to have them?

NO, NO, NO!!! It's such a huge step in the wrong direction =( Giving away guns won't do anything but create exponentially more problems. Why aren't we investing our time into TRANSFORMATIVE SOCIAL CHANGE???

Much needed since george zimmerman is on the loose in Florida neighborhoods again

It's only a matter of time before
He kills himself
Someone kills him
He kills someone
He is arrested for something serious
Suicide by police

This biased bullshit from the hipster assholes that write this "newspaper" makes me sick, Treyvon fucking Martin was not a saint first of all so stop bringing that shit up, nor was it a tragedy. Tragedies happen every day in South Florida where young men kill each other over what block they live in, but you cover more art walk and what hipster bullshit overpriced tortilla stand opens in Wynwood over real news, then you come with this bullshit about the gunshine state and all that crap. Look how safe Chicago is with all the gun laws they have asshole. The key words in this program are TRAINING and BACKGROUND CHECK. If you do not pass those you don't get a weapon, pretty simple. Also, as someone brought up earlier, guns are the great equalizers they put a 5' 6" 110 lb woman on the same level as a 200 lb 6'0" burglar, you clearly have no kids or significant other, but me as a father and a husband I want to make sure that both my women are as protected as humanly possible.

More gun cry-babying from you pussies.

"Or that violent crime is at a 20-year low in Florida."

Yeah--what happened during that 20 years? More guns than ever to law abiding citizens in Florida, with a vast expansion in concealed carry permits. Yet somehow violent crime is at a 20 year low.

Hmmmm....

You can't compare Florida to a country like Switzerland.

LOL, Rainy Kinchen, you've been paying attention. Imagine a gun in the hands of a naked zombie ?

All you fukers can kill yourselves with your guns. I will be playing golf where guns are banned. LMAO, but i would love to own a shotgun manufacture in Florida. DAMN!

Didn't Florida, just last year, have a gun amnesty program? Are we now paying the public for their guns in order to "give" them back? If EVERY citizen were required to participate in the Armed Forces. They'd receive training as well as provide for our country's defense. Then it would work. Look at Switzerland, no standing army but they arm all their citizens as a "people's militia." It works.

Will they also pass out guns to people they perceive to be crazy or unstable? Or to minorities (whom they probably already perceive on sight to be dangerous)? Just wondering...

"Never mind evidence that guns make countries and communities less safe, not more."--- Ask Mexico how restricting private gun ownership worked out for them.....I don't see anyone running across the border to Mexico to be "safe"

@inkaddict I agree with you 100%...this is a very biased article and was most likely written by some shithead that knows nothing about guns or crime statistics.

Hey there @inkaddict Let me take a moment reprieve from my hipster's lunch of overpriced tortillas and liberal ball-licking to respond to you. Let me get this straight: when "young men kill each other over what block they live in," it's a tragedy. But when an unarmed teenager gets killed by a grown man for no good reason, it's not. Why? Because the kid smoked pot? Also, I noted the training and background check in the story, just as I did the fact that 600,000 guns are stolen from homes every year. A lot of those thefts occur in Florida, only for the guns to end up in places like... you guessed it: Chicago.

tectorg

@inkaddict Don't worry, the government (i.e. the police) will protect us all. That is the implicit premise of these losers.

Uh, yeah. Occasionally they do a half-way decent job of investigation AFTER THE FACT. But in 99% of crimes they are not there to protect anybody, nor could they be. But they wait around for the coroner to show and put a toe tag on you.

@Alex Anico yeah he would have shot Zimmerman you dipshit then what.

@tectorg right on the money, there are even more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens and we are therefore able to protect ourselves from criminals.

@Christopher J Warren go play golf in Chicago you moron see how well the gun ban worked over there...Oh right it didn't so you are more likely to get shot while driving to the next hole than you are here driving through the worst neighborhood. Stupid fucking naive people.

@Rainy Kinchen PROPER TRAINING, BACKGROUND CHECK. Did you not read the article? Or is it selective vision?
