Dolphins Replace CEO Mike Dee With Guy Dee Replaced at the San Diego Padres
So after former Miami Dolphins CEO left the team this summer to replace some guy named Tom Garfinkle as President and CEO of the San Diego Padres, Stephen Ross and Dolphins brass started an exhaustive search to find his replacement. Oddly enough they've decided that the very same Tom Garfinkle, whom Mike Dee had replaced, is the right man to replace Dee.
Got that? Apparently these two dudes are just completely interchangeable.
Garfinkle had been CEO and President of the Padres since 2009. His resignation earlier this year came just a few months after a new ownership group led by Tom Fowler took over the team, and many speculated the new owners had wanted to install their own guy. During his tenure there, he helped to negotiate a $1 billion TV contract, though the team never made the playoffs.
In San Diego, Garfinkle had input into the on-the-field product. At Miami, he will not (and that's part of the reason Dee jumped ship in the first place). So his inexperience in football isn't all that concerning.
"As we set out to find the right leader for the organization, we had a specific set of criteria that we felt were critical. Tom has all of the qualities that we said were important in making this hire," Stephen Ross said in a statement. "Throughout an exhaustive process, Tom simply stood out from what was a great pool of candidates and it became an obvious choice. His intellect, leadership philosophy, and strategic mindset were clear separators. He is the right person because he is a leader with vision and integrity who can take this organization to the next level."
