LeBron James on Staying With the Heat Past 2014: "That's Ideal. But..."
LeBron James' Miami Heat contract gives him the option to become a free agent as soon as this summer. The King tells ESPN that while it would be "ideal" to stay with the Miami Heat, he really has "no idea" how exactly the future will play out.
Don't freak out too much though. We can't blame the guy for being a little shy when it comes to future promises to the city where he's currently playing.
"I have absolutely no idea," James told ESPN.com when asked about his plans for summer 2014. "I would love to spend the rest of my career in Miami with this great team and great organization as we continue to compete for championships. That's ideal. But we don't know what may happen from now to the end of the season. That's the nature of the business. It's the nature of not knowing what tomorrow brings.
"I mean, as a kid, I never thought the Bulls would break up," he continued. "But sometimes the nature of the business doesn't allow things to happen like you would want them to. But we'll see."
Let's also remember that both Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh could opt for free agency in 2014 as well. Other stars like Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant could also become free agents as well.
Sounds like LeBron's plans could be intertwined with his teammates' future. If he finds himself left on a Heat team he no longer feels can win a championship, don't be surprised if he at least thinks about jumping ship.
This is really a preview of what we should expect media-wise for the next 10 months. If the team falters at any point through next season -- or really does anything short of winning the championship -- expect lots of talk and rumors about how the Heat almost-dynasty will be lost to free agency.
In fact, we'll probably have to live with that chatter until LeBron finally does leave town or retires. It's the price we pay for having the biggest basketball star on the planet playing in town.
