Ricky Williams Used to Smoke Weed Before Games, Claims Channing Crowder

It shouldn't be that much of a surprise that Ricky Williams used to smoke pot the night before Dolphins games. And it's even less of a surprise that former Dolphins Channing Crowder is blabbing about it.

Former linebacker Crowder was on WQAM yesterday morning when he started addressing Williams' marijuana use.

"Remember that Buffalo game, the 200-yard game?" Crowder said. "Smoked the night before. Talk to Ricky. He was doing it, that's what he did. Ricky has social anxiety and he smoked weed. Ricky's marijuana didn't affect the team until he got caught smoking ... Him smoking weed, sitting at his house smoking weed, didn't affect anybody but Ricky. He got high and then he sobered up and then he went to practice the next day."

Pro Football Talk goes on to suggest that pot use amongst NFL players isn't really all that uncommon. Players are tested only once a year, and, ironically, testing begins on 4/20. Once they pass that test they're pretty much free to toke up until testing roles around again the next year. Williams was apparently just a bit more careless.

Oddly, this is not the first time a former player has claimed a star Dolphins player used to smoke pot before games.

Offensive lineman Kyle Turley once told Dan LeBatard that he's heard Dan Marino got high before games and didn't even leave time to sober up. He says Marino would actually play stoned.

"I've actually heard from guys that it actually slows things down so you can see things a little better and that's where the whole Marino thing came from," Turley elaborated. "And I don't know if it's true or not, but it's something I heard that that was something that he was able to get relaxed before the games and not be too edgy and calm and collected and be able to see things more clearly on the field."

Of course, Turley never actually played with Marino, and said the rumors are just locker room talk.
