Hurricanes Are Biggest Top 10, Undefeated Underdogs in History Against FSU

The Miami Hurricanes have had to come from behind to secure wins against lesser opponents in their last three games. The Florida State Seminoles, meanwhile, made former No. 3 Clemson look like an FCS team in its own stadium. So maybe it's not much of a surprise that according to Vegas, the Miami Hurricanes are the biggest underdogs in any match up this late in the season between two undefeated, Top 10 teams since records have been kept in 1980.

The line opened at 21 in favor of the Seminoles and now sits at 22.

Eye on the U points out that according to ESPN radio host and Vegas insider RJ Bell, that's a record.

Only twice in the past 33 years have there been match ups between two Top 10, undefeated teams this late in the season where the line was even in double digits:

  • Texas favored by 12 hosting Oklahoma State (Oct. 25, 2008)
  • Miami favored by 11 vs. Ohio State (2002 BCS Title Game)

Texas ended up beating Oklahoma State by only four, and let's not talk about that 2002 BCS title game.

When you look at both Miami's and FSU's paths to their Top 10 status, it's not easy to figure out why Vegas is so hot in favor of FSU. The Seminoles' closest game all season was a 14-point win. They picked off Clemson with a 37-point margin. Miami beat North Carolina and Wake Forest by a combined total of six points. Add in FSU's home-field advantage, and, well, I guess you get a 22-point line.

Of course, this is the Miami-FSU rivalry. Anything can and has happened.
