On a rural block facing fields of crops a few blocks from the edge of the Everglades in South Dade, a gunfight broke out around 7:45 last night. By the time a swarm of Miami-Dade Police officers reached the remote scene, at least two people were dead and several more were wounded.

Police this morning are still trying to sketch out what caused the bloodshed, but CBS 4 reports the shooting might have occurred at an illegal cockfighting ring.

The violence erupted inside a shed on a strip of farmland near SW 168th Street and Krome Avenue.

A spokeswoman declined this morning to discuss the shooting with Riptide, saying homicide detectives had yet to report back with information about the deaths.

But a CBS 4 chopper last night caught at least two bodies being carried out of the shed and reported that multiple other victims were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. Two other people were spotted fleeing the scene, police tell the station.

The rural location has made the investigation more difficult, an MDPD spokesman says.

"It is a remote area. Crime scene investigators have their job cut out for them in order to be able to process everything that occurred," Det. Alvaro Zabaleta tells CBS 4.

We'll update this post when there's more information about the shooting.
