Miami Santeria Mystery: Who in Hell Stuck This Family Photo Inside a Live Chicken?

Categories: WTF Florida

A family photo was pulled out of this male chicken named Trooper.
Freedom of religion is enshrined in our nation's founding documents. But every once in a while, someone overdoses on the Holy Spirit and goes way overboard. Like the 22-year-old Tennessee pastor who exposes his congregation to deadly snakes in the name of Jesus. Then there's the Amish sect leader who went on a terrifying hate crime spree. Or just Google "jihadi."

Here in Miami, many of the most shocking spiritual snafus involve Santería. We've seen skinned puppies, dogs nailed to crosses, decapitated animals strewn across the street, and even a human skull or two.

But perhaps none of that is as crazy -- or cruel -- as what a Parks Department employee found earlier this month: a live chicken with Santería charms sewn into its flesh. Warning: These photos are pretty freaky.

Here is an email sent by the Parks Department employee, who does not wish to be named, explaining her hideous discovery:

Hi [Redacted Name],

Hope you are doing well these days. We haven't talked in a while, but a very odd thing has happened that I thought you'd find interesting and wondered if you have any suggestions.

About 10 days ago, I was at Larry & Penny [Thompson Park in South Miami-Dade] and a young chick walked toward me along the right-of-way. Alone and out in the open, I have no idea what he was doing there, how long he'd been there, or what happened. I offered some food and he let me pick him up. Upon inspection I saw he was injured along the knee bone. I didn't have much time and thought he probably wouldn't make it through the night, but he did.

I cleaned out the "wound" and did 3 days of dewormer, then several days of bird biotic. He is eating well and looked progressively better each day.

I had to go to my mom's for several days, so I took him with me and he's been a real trooper. As the swelling has gone down after several days, I cannot figure out what is going on with these injuries. There were 2-3 round open marks on either side of the keel bone plus an odd injury right at the top point of the keel bone. As of today it looked as though the keel bone was protruding out of the chest!

My friend the chicken lady [Katha Sheehan] stopped by today to help me take a better look, and we wound up finding the most odd thing. Someone had sewn into this poor live bird some kind of religious artifacts. Unbelievable that this bird was even alive.

Cue the grisly photo reel:

Hypocrisy is the tribute vice pays to virtue, so they say!  All religions pretty much impose unreasoned beliefs and sacrifices upon their innocent and unconsenting children.  I think that's why religionists won't put an end to this ugliness.  They like to just sit on the sidelines wringing their hands and saying, "Religion is good.  It's just the people who practice it (in ways OTHER than MINE) who are evil."

As an atheist I find it interesting that all you religionists have a hard time denouncing blood sacrifice because you all have it in your closet somewhere:  even if today you practice only "blood sacrifice in effigy" (the Mass.)  The same way Jews can't in good conscience denounce the female circumcision so long as they practice the male version.  Yet atheists are abhorred as being "immoral"?  When is the last time someone has pronounced the words "atheist blood sacrifice"?

I tend to agree this was not "mainstream Santeria" but probably some con artist extracting money from the ignorant and the desperate.  If it is so, the Santeria people must expose and denounce these practices, or the bad smell will continue to cling to their robes, and they will continue to be credited with every bizarre act involving animal sacrifice.

This is called witchcraft which is part of the Occult, condemned by the holy Word of God. Let's understand something. The crazy things that people do, such as the pastor exposing people to deadly snakes, is NOT from the Holy Ghost. Those that are spiritually blind will do these things. But, as for the witchcraft seen above, it is the worship of Satan and his demons and is very real. God is real and so is Satan. Obviously, to worship in Spirit and in Truth you need to accept Christ into your heart, repent of your sins, and allow God to lead your life (in other words be born again and repent of your sins). Any other way is of Satan and invites demons into your soul.

What kind of evil people do you have living in your country? This is your new immigration groups??? Anyone with half an education knows that people who are cruel and insensitive to animals are the exact same to people.

"Seriously, we're curious. If you know what this is ...let us know."

You admit not knowing what it is. Yet you have no qualms of labeling it as "santería" before you have any evidence that it is. Thanks for the prejudice and the sloppy journalism.

Here we go "it's not Santeria" you say every time it's ugly. But Santeria is the reason this uncivilized, ignorant shit is beyond legal consequence in this state. You can't have it both ways.

When are Miami journalists going to start actually researching African religions before attributing everything to Santeria? It's like attributing every sexual abuse case to a "Papist" priest.

This appears to be a bastardized working of Palo Mayombe. If you look at the paper closely, you see a skull with a firma drawn, and beside it the word Zarabanda, which is the name of a nkisi in that faith. However, to my knowledge such a working would not be done on a living chicken. The chicken would be sacrificed first. Plus -- chicken doesn't even GO to Zarabanda. It would be a rooster. This looks like the handiwork of someone who was mixing and matching stuff -- in other words -- someone crazy.

it may actually be a good thing. a very active santeria practicer I know said maybe its because that family is in another country and they are trying to get them over here and immigration paperwork approved so they can be US Citizens.

This has nothing to do with a Santeria ritual. Some people are just plain crazy. I know an "hija" de Oya that is so GONE that does crazy things...similar to this crazy, abusive story.

Very interesting report. Would like to be updated if found the people on the photo and the "meaning" of that cruelty to that poor chick. Thanks for sharing.

How's is this a "santeria" ritual? As an active practioner and priest of 25 years I have yet to see this or any ritual involving dogs nailed on crosses as the artjcle implies. In addtion I must agree with Edward Edward Delatorre when he implies our hypocrisy when it comes to commercial farming and it's abuses.

What was done to this poor bird is horrible, but how about doing a little research before you slander an entire religion?

Also it is interesting how people will get upset about something like this... but they'll still eat chicken. Some kinds of animal torture are considered beyond the pale... yet other kinds are just a part of our everyday life.

@bstuartmyers   I checked another article about this.  The chicken is actually a rooster.  This article doesn't have the same details reported in local accounts.

While I can't speak with any authority on the religion Palo Mayombe (other than that this doesn't seem like a "valid" working by a "valid" priest), anyone interesting in how Lucumí/Santeria sacrifices are done could take a look at a book I've written on the subject. It's better to be educated on what is valid in a tradition and what is not when seeing horrible things like what was done to this live chicken:

@josemiami And we would want people who do this to animals to be
US citizens...why?

@bella6379 @josemiami ... Or conversely, we should now stop people from immigrating just because their relatives do things we don't like? How about if people are only responsible for their own actions?
