One Brickell City Centre: Tallest Building in the Southeast

Categories: News

The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing plans for a 1,100-foot-tall monstrosity planned for 700 Brickell Ave., currently the Northern Trust Bank building. One Brickell City Centre would be taller than any skyscraper in Miami or Atlanta or anywhere else in Dixie.

It would even be taller than Manhattan's Chrysler Building. And it would be a helluva lot higher than Miami's now number one, the Four Seasons Hotel, which is a pitiful 70 stories and 789 feet, or Atlanta's 1,023-foot, 55-story Bank of America Tower.

ExMiami reports the site for the tower at 700 Brickell Ave. will combine land bought by Swire Properties for more than $13 million, and land next door, which cost more than $64 million.

It would be the second stage of the enormous -- and now-under-construction -- Brickell City Centre just to the west. That project will include a luxury shopping center, two residential towers, apartments, offices, and a wellness center, featuring an innovative $20 million "climate ribbon" that will provide air flow, according to Curbed Miami.

Like the mixed-use monstrosity next door, the new tower is being designed by Arquitectonica. Steven Owens, Swire's president, said in a release: "The site is of great strategic importance for the development of Brickell CityCentre because it provides the project with a critical front door onto Miami's most significant boulevard.''

Whether it will be tall enough to withstand the flood created by global warming remains to be seen.

Mibalz, if that was the case, half of the skylkine would have toppled over by now. The FAA has a 1,010 ft. height restriction in Miami, so I suspect Squire is shooting for the stars and will settle for hitting the moon. Granted, if anyone has the experience, money, lawyers, and leverage to bend the rules, it would be Squire, so we'll see... Either way, this will be a huge addition to the skyline when it's built, even if the FAA chops it down a bit.

if you were to tell me, that this leviathan was to be erected on Ponce De Leon, away from blithe and ghetto, OK... But bringing high end stores from Bal Harbour to Brickell?!?! Stay tuned.

Honest question: Will the soil be able to handle the building? I was under the impression that you couldn't build above 40 stories.

Monstrosity? Global warming flood? Let's see, you don't like capitalism and buildings that stand for it. You're not going to be around to see "the flood" anyway, hippie freak.

MYABE it IS progress but i step back and see JORGE PEREZ a multi-billionaire developer GETTING BIGGER and the average MIAMI resident stuck on 95 as well as in career and frazzled and GOING DOWN underwater and the average non-english speaking resident even worse off stuck in minimum wage unskilled jobs in declining neighborhoods GETTING SMALLER - so WHO do these projects really benefit ?

ten thousand MORE cars to come into MIAMI on (barely moving) 95 to deliver workers to the desks of the business section of a building like this and few hundred MORE housekkeepers to come into MIAMI by (barely functional) public transportation to attend to the occupants and hotel guests and the residential / resort portion of this building - AND I GUESS THAT's PROGRESS

i guess it beats an empty unoccupied luxury high rise whose units have all been purchased for CASH sight unseen by DRUG KINGPINs laundering illegal profits in a sham transaction

...............................actually being in a HIGH building during global warming IS where i would want to be - just keep climbing the stairs up - right ?

anyway if anyone down here cared for global warming it's too late - we killed the everglades beyond hope and that's that - its' gone = period

and also the real estate developers and south american and mexican geo-narcotics drug kingpins, the real players in these FINANCIAL monstrosities could care LESS about the local economy or environment or local residents or climate change = period

IF THE real money behind these trasnactions had any conscience they wouldn't be selling the DRUGs (the dealers) and they wouldn't be building useless expensive baseball stadiums (the developers) gutting local neighborhoods

...................if those druglord would pay $1,000 a square foot those greedy developers would find a way to pave the whole everglades over with concrete = period

Miami has a neat little thing called barrier islands, Miami Beach being one of them. If any part of South Florida will be under water in 50 years, it won't be Brickell.

It shouldn't surprise me how short-sighted and ignorant people who post here are when it comes to basic economics.

They continue to support and vote for continued Keynesian policies.  A economic theory that even it's creator admits is purely short term.

The worst part is that history has proven time and again that it isn't even effective in the short term.  Witness the longest economic downturn in US history we are currently in.

FAA? Then guarantee it will be done. We've been fighting them for the last 10 years over the stupid unusable runway they've been building for fort lauderdale. Apparently FAA has carte blanche when it wants to ruin cities.

................................another monstrosity ONLY DRUG KINGpins can afford to participate in - buying units sight-unseen at over $700 per square foot and higher AND never occupying them...................... anyway once BRAZILs economy crashes all these projects will once again be busted

IT MEANS nothing to the average MIAMI resident

Denison Wiedman
Denison Wiedman

Why? it's not worth it, Miami's gunna be under water within 50 years why don't they start designing the city to adapt to the future? who gives a fuck about the tallest buildings anymore, it's a waste of money...

Another building that'll never see even 50% occupancy and thanks to tax breaks will cost Miami more $$ than it'll ever make

The only monstrosity is the jealous hatred spewed in the article.

Funny how the people who generate Billions of dollars in projects and actually stimulate the economy seem to not be worried about "Global Warming" but a hack writer for a free tabloid is,

I wonder why.

If the left is right about Global warming how come so many move to Miami?

@frankd4 I guess the 1000's of immdiate jobs and tens of thousands of jobs long term means nothing to the average Miami resident.

Seriously......Does anyone else here have even the most basic grasp of economics>

.............................you sound qualified to be the citys head code ordinance except what about MIAMI real estate development EVER made sense ?

we got a very expensive new BASEBALL stadium in an area made poorer by it and a TEAM that no one respects

and you're preaching green environment climate economics ?   puh-leeze dude whatever is good for geo-narcotics drug kingpins is where we aim - right ?

the commissioners don't get kick-backs from tree-huggers

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

................................yes that is the general idea - the developers profits by gougin drug kingpins who BUY IN yet shorts the city out of proper impact fees and initial real estate taxes - however the unions will need the city to hire new water / sewer maintenance and fire and police personnel PLUS all new equipment (imagine the new multi million dollar fire engines needed to service that building !)  and training and conventions and administrative meetings - AND ALL THOSE KICK-BACKs from all those NEW vendors !

here in ft liquordale the MORE luxury high-rises went up the MORE into the hole the city became YET the city is onto allowing MORE buildings - so it can't be the city admin is working in the best interest of the FINANCIAL HEALTH of the city (so it MUST be something else - right ?)

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

............................yes drug kingpinS DO STIMULATE THE ECONOMY..............LOOK AT mexico - right ? problem is they also PRICE normal MIAMI residents OUT of the market - another problem is they also KILL people

but if you want drug dealers and kingpins as YOUR neighbors generating these BILLIONs of dollars okay buit tell me HOW IS HIALEAH BETTER OFF TODAY ?

didn't their MAYORs both just get arrest or indicted - that's the government you want this stimulated economy to be buying into ? that's your idea of economic health and viability ?

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

yeah right hey .....................LOOK HOW healthy HIALEAH became with the completion of that NEW VERY EXPENSIVE BASEBALL STADIUM - right ?

don't people want to FLOCK to HIALEAH to live and shop and play since all that money was spent on construction and improvements and a new ballpark ?

same with this new proposal - think of all the new BRAZILIANs and south americans who will FLOCK to this new cosntruction like pigeons - right ?

frankd4

@Anthonyvop1 @frankd4

well if that were the case WHY IS HIALEAH broke ?

why is ft liquordale on the verge of bankruptcy ?

WHY DIDN'T all those J O B S after andrew in 1992 create a BOOM in the standard of living (MIAMI for one is among the poorest big cities in America (how basic is that grasp of economics for you?)

i think you confusing "activity" with "progress"

BANKS did a lot of "mortgage transactions" but did NO "mortgage banking"....................and look where that got us !

Anthonyvop1

@frankd4 Now it is drug kingpins?

Anthonyvop1
Anthonyvop1 topcommenter

@frankd4 What baseball stadium in Hialeah?  Do you even live in the Miami area?

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

....................the MAIN question is this:

with ALL the cataclysmic spending on a sparkling new baseball stadium and all those luxury high-rises post-andrew and building billion dollar tunnels and expanding roads and infastructure to improve the resources here - THEN WHY are HALF the school aged children either FOOD or SHELTER (insecure and most BOTH) and MIAMI the largest population POOR city in america with MOST of the population living at or under the poverty line ?

basically, how many "locals" are actually financially IMPROVING their standard of living ?

Anthonyvop1
Anthonyvop1 topcommenter

@Learn2SwimFastNow @Anthonyvop1 Wow.

So in your world businesses world wide would risk the liability and loss of income just to make a quick buck.

In your world every company is evil and incompetent.

In your world those who are successful got their through immoral acts.

In your world it is only the greedy corporations and the Republicans preventing you from living in Unicorn and Rainbows bliss.

@Anthonyvop1

that is exactly what i said:

"so one year AFTER andrew (1992) THROUGH today with ALL the monstrous projects and cataclysmic CASH pouring INTO construction - both those cities peoples are worse off than before"

i repeat we are WORSE OFF THAN BEFORE because we spent a lot of money a cataclysmic amount BUT created nothing lasting or self-sustaining or improving what we had before = period

similarly i say that $563,ooo,ooo,ooo that was SPENT IN HIALEAH on that new baseball stadium, will do nothing more for HIALEAH except be a drain on local resources

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

@Allemandes @frankd4 @Anthonyvop1

it's certainly NOT better off than it was twenty or so years ago either

my point is there has been a monstrous amount of building and construction and increased strain on resources

it's certain no more "livable" that per-andrews IN MY OPINION and that of many others

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

@Anthonyvop1

EXHIBIT ONE = MIAMI and HIALEAH are both poorer today that twenty years ago (factoring inflation and season fluctuations and dollar valuations)

so one year AFTER andrew (1992) THROUGH today with ALL the monstrous projects and cataclysmic CASH pouring INTO construction - both those cities peoples are worse off than before

MIAMI is the largest poor city in AMERICA = period

you can blame who you like or explain it with whatever VIDEO you like but basically the economics are the locals cannot afford those high rise luxury units being bought up by outsiders who do NOT improve the local economies on a sustainable level = period

YES the rich come in and play and a lot of benjamins float around BUT the people, the local residents, are getting poorer than they were decades ago

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

@Anthonyvop1 @frankd4

.

okay enter POLITICs i see where you are coming from now

lets take an island like BAHAMAs and use the hotel complex ATLANTIS to compare with MIAMI

building that hotel DID indeed create J O B S and many local bahamians or "conch" did indeed benefit however a small handful of conch benefited even MORE in fact they became multi-millionaires and to this day control the island

those same J O B S eventually translated into unskilled labor housekeeping and dishwashing and cutting grass and laundry AT ATLANTIS - hundreds of unskilled low paying J O B S which previously skilled carpenters and mechanics and building tradesmen took because ONCE ATLANTIS was compete so did the good paying J O B S disappear

now all the rich NYers come down and pay $12 for a 12oz Coke with ICE plus TIP and TAX comes to $18 - but the servers and unskilled workers don't see more than their $2 per hour standard wages on that monstrous mark-up

the investors reeping the spoils are those few local conchs who are multi-millionaires and rich foreigners who SUCK OUT every last profit from the ATLANTIS operations (basically rich owners suckling from rich tourists)

same in MIAMI rich developers paying locals pennies in either temporary J O B S or political kick-backs to suck drug dealers CASH which those kingpins are LAUNDERING - the locals do NOT profit from or benefit in any way that is self-sustaining AND IN FACT have to accept the low paying unskilled J O B S that do exist

that my friend is how it works here in MIAMI = period

@frankd4 @Anthonyvop1Hialeah and Ft. Lauderdale's economic woes are down to failed Keynesian policies and nothing to do with the Marlin's stadium.

    You obviously subscribe to the broken window fallacy that politicians like to push unto low information voters like you.  Andrew was a perfect example.

Here. Take 31/2 minutes of your life and educate yourself

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG3AKoL0vEs

After Andrew we did have a temporary boost in construction employment but it in no way made up for the 1000's of displaced businesses that left South-Dade because of the Government's actions.

@frankd4 @Anthonyvop1 How many "Drug Kingpins"  2? 6? A Dozen?  2 Dozen?

We are talking about thousands and thousands of condos.   A handful of drug dealers barely registers as a blip.

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

@Anthonyvop1

well once the article goes PUBLIC you will see that certain luxury high-rise condos in particular buildings are a statistically meaningful barometer of that buildings ALL CASH unit sales connection

(one DRUG dealing KING PIN had five units seized in ONE building - his "secretary" bought three of the units and later quit claimed the units over to the King Pin - ALL the units were initially purchased ALL CASH from LLC sources !?!)

it may take years to convict this King Pin on drug related charged but he is only ONE of MANY who are in that pipe-line

@frankd4 @Anthonyvop1 Your support for your argument is anecdotal at best.

The fact that some people are protesting in Brazil doesn't mean that there aren't wealthy people there.

People protested in the US as well.  Remember the Occupy Wall Street twits?  Plenty of wealthy people in the USA though.

You have a problem separating the free market and capitalism, which I am a supporter of and Cronyism which is what the Marlin's Stadium, The World Cup & the Olympics in Brazil is.

I abhor Cronyism in all forms.

the LLCs that wire cash IN to purchase sight unseen high rise luxury units is currently the NUMBER ONE source of drug related money laundering activity in the US

in a few weeks an article will come out expanding HOW MANY UNITs over the past years have been seized by federal drug enforcement agencies in SPECIFIC buildings here in MIAMI

where do YOU think this money is coming from ?

IF BRAZILIANs are so wealthy why are the people there in the streets protesting lack of basic services ?  why are investigations in BRAZIL highlighting the millions being spent on the WORLD CUP an OLYMPICs when so many people are going starving uneducated poor housing unemployed ?

      When you say things like, “Shit head” you are basically admitting they can't use reason and logic to make your point. It is probably because you are stuck in some form of cognitive dissonance which you can't see. Goes back to the saying "internalize success, externalize failure"... how about instead of throwing ad hominems and straw mans, you actually make a coherent point, otherwise no one can take you seriously anyways.

     Freedom is fact based, statism is based on emotions and the rejection of logic.
