Aventura Entrepreneur Posts What "May Be Biggest Social Media Blunder of 2013"

Gopman poses with Mark Zuckerberg. His startup is sponsored by Facebook.
Greg Gopman has a very fitting name. The University of Florida grad and founder of the now-defunct Weekend Gator bus service moved to San Francisco in September 2011 to form a startup, AngelHack. After two years, the wannabe entrepreneur is apparently still appalled by the homeless population there. Gopman, who hails from Aventura, recently posted a Facebook diatribe about the "degenerates" who live in the City by the Bay.

"Just got back to SF. I've traveled around the world and I gotta say there is nothing more grotesque than walking down market st in San Francisco," the 29-year-old wrote on Tuesday. "Why the heart of our city has to be overrun by crazy, homeless, drug dealers, dropouts, and trash I have no clue. Each time I pass it my love affair with SF dies a little."

When his insensitivity was called into question by national media outlets such as Slate and the Daily Mail, and after the Huffington Post wrote that it "may be the biggest social media blunder of 2013," Gopman took down his rant. On Wednesday, he posted an apology that wasn't well received by all.

It's fair to say Gopman probably encountered quite a few displaced, unfortunate souls during his upbringing in Miami-Dade. Anyone who has ever walked through downtown wouldn't be surprised to know that about 800 homeless live in the city today. However, in Miami, a middle-class family can afford about 51 percent of the homes for sale.

In San Francisco, things are much more dire. Only 14 percent of homes for sale in that city are affordable to the same demographic.. Of course, Gopman and his techie friends are part of the problem. Thanks to an influx of wealthy people looking to start "like, a cross between OkCupid and Yelp," the median rent in SF went from $2,968 in 2010 to $3,414 this year. Additionally, no-fault evictions are pushing out the Bay's natives to make way for people like Gopman and his friends.

AngelHack advertises itself as "the best damn hackathon you've ever seen," and CEO Gopman prides himself on offering "gourmet meals, toys, shirts, shwag, and massages" to its participants. Weekend Gator, his first startup, was apparently a bust. "It was on its way to be a $1,000,000 business, but as fate would have it, I chose partners poorly, and greed ended up destroying things as the money started to pile up," Gopman wrote on his LinkedIn account.

Oh my fucking god. The girl telling him he shouldn't have had to apologize? Who said she'd put homeless people in labor camps, and defended it with a Dr Seuss quote? Holy shit.

considering Ronald Medina's existence, this isn't nearly the worst social media post in the county - let alone the year or world.

The problem is the do gooders that refuse having some of these "chronic homeless" from being forced into work and shelters. I know about a dozen homeless that I talk with on a frequent basis....sometimes help a bit and definitely limit cash....but they all are highly manipulative people that pray on the sympathies of strangers. I know, one guy brags about all the time ... especially the "Village Voice" scam where he sells those newspapers....they pocket a bunch of the cash and others make out by taking the cash for their rentals rooms..... I am referring to the chronic homeless which includes people who are just plain old "bums" that don't want life's responsibilities and get by just they way they like on the streets. They get free bus passes and laugh about stinking up the buses. In the end, to a man they are all about the freebies and avoid working...which ironically they put so much effort into not working that it is practically a job in and of itself. We need to stop enabling freeloaders in our society...

He is a pussy for apologizing. But at the same time he is also a naive little bitch from Aventura. His little Asian girl friend needs to watch her mouth. Cunt doesn't know what's she is talking about either and says she wants to put people in a labor camp.

Thank God we don't have to live with who he is. Unfortunately for him, he does.

My advice, especially to up-and-coming entrepreneurs, if you're going to complain follow it by providing a solution and then act on it. Your name and your business will soon benefit as a result.

Watch yourself young man you lost one business you are only one step away everyday yourself. One serious illness one injury one more failed business. But for the Grace of God go I dude. Humility is a good quality in a successful person. Karma is a bitch dude.

The invocation of Dr. Seuss in the same breath as a call for labor camps for the homeless is mind boggling. Come to think of it, calling for labor camps as a solution for homelessness is mind boggling in and of itself. And what if they refuse to go to the labor camps? Shall we shove them into gas ovens?

That's a very good observation of DT SF. It IS a toilet waiting for Nancy Pelosi to flush!

The same degenerates, homeless, and dropouts that he has pass on his way up, are the same ones he will pass on his way down.

My opinion alone. The nation should have more social services for the homeless and population as a whole. Mental health is a rabid disease that our people suffer from. With a post like Greg Gopmans, it's a call out for the local govt. and how they handle or don't handle it's people. Govt. can find funding for abortions and arrests and jailtime for pot smokers but not for housing or half way housing for the mentally unwell that end up on the street. Some of these homeless people have family that has been disconnected for years!! Reconnect and I'm sure some of these families will contribute to the financial side. How often do we see a homeless person make the news for a good deed etc and a family that's been lost for decades comes forward? Greg Gopman isn't the bad guy w his post.

Subject seems a bit lightweight for MNT, with due respect (and that is saying A LOT). We're literally gossiping about a dumb post from a kid who grew up in Aventura. If this is worthy of coverage my personal News-Feed is a gold mine.

"Forgive them father they know not what they say or do". Having worked and lived amongst the educated and affluent while also taking time to visit with the homeless and "lost" in cities throughout America in my travels for business, I've found a greater call for extending compassion to the wealthy who are so often unhappy and "empty", than to the homeless who are humble in spirit, grateful for kindness and possess a window in their eyes which often allows me to see Christ!

I was homeless in The Bay Area for many years & he is right - SF does take the cake for disgustingness as far as its underbelly is concerned.
