Coral Gables Is Miami's Best Neighborhood

With a city hall as epic as this, is there even a question?
My colleagues argue that the Beaches, both North and South, are the best neighborhoods in Miami-Dade. Which is fine, I suppose, if you're the kind of person who wants to drag sand into your tiny apartment every afternoon and whatever boozy hookup you picked up every night. It's a fun life for awhile, but most serious people who want to establish a life in Miami-Dade dream of calling only one city home: Coral Gables.

It's "the City Beautiful," after all, and here are ten reasons it's the city best.

See also: South Beach Is Miami's Best Neighborhood, Hands Down

1. Coral Gables knows what it is and stays that way.
Half of the other areas in Miami change identities more quickly than Charlie Crist flip-flops on political positions. South Beach has been an ever-changing hot spot for mafiosi, poor old people, criminals, gays, boozy Europeans, NYC expats, and rich old people at various points in its history. Some neighborhoods go from Puerto Rican enclaves to artsy gallery drags to (eventually) gaudy outdoor megamalls.

Not Coral Gables. Now just a few years shy of it's 90th birthday, the Gables is still exactly what it originally set out to be. Laugh all you want at its strict zoning laws, but Coral Gables is still the same it always was -- well, with a few more pickup trucks recently.

2. All the benefits of having a major college, few of the downsides.
It was the founders of Coral Gables who first envisioned plans for the University of Miami (so, you're welcome, rest of Miami), and the city enjoys all the perks of hosting a Top 50 university and few of the downsides. See, UM students may love to party, but it's not much of a party campus. The Gables gets them during the day when they're bright and studious, and then they head to the Grove or the Beach to party. It's a perfect harmony.

3. Venetian Pool
Yes, living right near a beach is nice, but Coral Gables has one of America's most unique public pools. Plus, admission is discounted for Gables residents. Built on an old rock quarry, the waterfall-adorned pool features fresh water directly from Florida's aquifers.

4. It's hospitable to drivers, bikers, and pedestrians.
Yes, there are a few major roadways that wind through the Gables, but for the most part traffic is relatively sane. That cuts down on driver stress and leaves plenty of friendly areas for bikers and pedestrians to roam.

5. Banyan trees!
Everywhere banyan trees! Big, beautiful banyans along almost every street. How can you not love banyans?

Very few Jamaicans. Even less Haitians. A great formula for any good neighborhood.

Why does BEST NEIGHBORHOOD have to cost so much to live there. I think that is SO DISGUSTING. A good h neighborhood should comprise of different socio economic classes.

Coral Gables is it's own city with a rich history that rivals Miami's. It's not part of Miami, and it's not a neighborhood.

Had to move out cause of the rent but it easily beats any other spot in town. Very walkable, bike friendly, many trees and many cultural events.

..................as for the U .................. comparing it to what i myself am familiar with as far as "university towns" the city of NEW HAVEN connecticut has a love / hate relationship with YALE - one doesn't "make" the other and it's not even a symbiotic relationship YET similar to DARTMOUTH in new hampshire and PRINCETON in new jersey there ARE benefits for each, town and school, that transcend mere geography

as for a cuba or hispanic influence today well yes but i don't know if that matters nor is it the financial resources now available to maintain it's infastructure

my old neighborhood also had a U school - whatsamatta U - and although there wasn't seemingly a lot of money around it certainly was and IS resourced in history and religion and culture and food and foreign language and custom, then AND today, as a safe and pleasant environment for young AND old alike (whereby a stranger would be initially given the benefit of the doubt)

Phil you're an idiot. Ask any student at UM if they walk to sunset late at night. No!!!!! Why because you're going to get mugged. Does the same happen in Miami lakes? Palm Springs north? Nope.....Coral gables is bordered by section 8's.

If your upper middle or above getting close to retirement with grandchildren and are not concerned with night life or walkabilty. I live there now and I'm out this bitch and headed for the Flamingo park area at South Beach. You would figure the New Time's to be more "hip" SMH

Coral Gables is a Spanish revival architectural gem. It is a model that should be followed by many sunbelt cities that have taste, a sense of European charm and a desire for walkable living. Their codes are strict, but they work, look at the result? It is elegant, his building's worth preserving and also has a very hip and cool crowd that do the restaurants. They should make a Lincoln Road and it is adios, Miamii Beach. I cannot afford the Cables, but I live close by and enjoy Spris, the Biltmore and house watching. We should strive to make the rest of Miami like the Gables, the way Havana once was. Or where do you think this great idea of Spanish revival came from? San Francisco? Think again. Try Paseo Del Prado, Miramar or Vedado in Havana.

Listen crazys. When they said Coral Gables they didn't mean The Grove and the infested little Bahamian right next door. You want to know the god honest truth why Coral Gables is Miami's best neighborhood? It's because it doesn't have a lower class; blacks, Latinos. Along with a well paid police force these two variables make for a safer environment than others. You want to call me racist because you are a bleeding heart, ignorant liberal, go ahead. The truth is I'm not. I'm a realist.

"Best neighborhood" is an oxymoron. Best for what group of society? CG is best for the residents of CG. Hypothetically if everyone had the same income and values, then we could compare. This is like trying to define the "best country" or even the "best people". High School politics. We need to appreciate the tremendous diversity of this county and not feed divisive feelings. Neighbors should respect other neighbors...

All good points...especially on SoBe -

The Gables is old money and old school and surrounded by old crime...That makes wearing a Rolex more dangerous than driving a Porche GT drunk.

DelVicio, if anything happens in Gables, it's always an inside job (like that stolen Aston Martin, from Gables Estates!). Drop the "racist" label when addressing me and, next time, READ PROPERLY instead of magnifying "CUBAN". Gables police will, politely, trace yo' ass if they perceive you don't live or belong in Gables. Along with Aventura, are the safest places to live in Dade County... Them and SoFi.

^^^ Racist Phil ....how many UM students get stabbed walking to sunset place...please, the grove???? How many people got stabbed on Halloween last year. What rock have you been hiding under? How about DUI's around grove??? Please Coral gables is infested with malice. The robbers go to nice neighborhoods to rob buddy!!

the mayor's not Cuban, few Cubans in the City, no Cubans in City Government, no Leon Medical Centers and secure though bordered by both the Grove and South Miami ghettos (need I say more?!).

Cuban Americans make up a majority of homeowners in Coral Gables, we even had a Cuban mayor, Valdes Fauli...so get your facts straight!

marsman10x

The former Mayor WAS Cuban, the current one was at the USINT in Havana, Coral Gables HAS a majority CUBAN population, deal with it.
