Critiquing George Zimmerman's $100,000 Painting

The art world is abuzz today about the price of George Zimmerman's debut painting, "Untitled (One Nation Under God)" reaching nearly $100,000 at renowned auction house eBay. Zimmerman's monstrous debut only adds to the growing importance of the Conservative Renaissance Art movement, which already includes promising young talents such as George W. Bush and Jon McNaughton, a Utah artist celebrated for his various works depicting President Obama defacing the Constitution.

But what does Zimmerman's painting mean?

First, we must examine the materials.

"As far as I know, it is regular household latex paint. I know it's not the fanciest, but it is what we had, and I needed to put these visions onto the blank canvas as soon as possible," Zimmerman wrote in response to a potential buyer's query.

His choice of materials can only be read as a bold and fearless rebuke of the elitism of the art world. He doesn't traffic in elitist, fancy-pants paints like oil or acrylic. Zimmerman is just a regular guy using regular household paint in an attempt to communicate his vision to regular Americans. It intriguingly asks the question, "If it's good enough for a summer camp arts-and-crafts class, why can't it be good for the art world?" Why not, indeed.

The eye, of course, is immediately drawn to the text. They are familiar words selected from the Pledge of Allegiance, but Zimmerman has rearranged the text. "God" comes first, with "one nation" underneath it. Clever, if not breathtakingly innovative.

While previous studies of the American icon -- such as Childe Hassam's The Avenue in the Rain, and Jasper Johns' Three Flags -- concentrate on the iconic red, white and blue, Zimmerman here chooses to represent the flag in monochromatic shades of blue, a color associated with melancholy and depression. It might be easy to assume Zimmerman is making a serious critique of the state of our nation, but perhaps it runs deeper than that.

The American flag as we know it is a bright display of strongly contrasting colors, but perhaps Zimmerman is suggesting that America is stronger when it is made up of various shades of the same basic color.

That theme would dovetail strongly with the message of his previous performance art. You know, that time he killed an unarmed black teenager and got off after claiming self-defense. Oh, God, and now someone out there is apparently willing to pay $100,00 for his new little hobby. If anything, this work's strongest message, unintentional of course, is just how horrible this world is. Good Lord.

Serial killer John Wayne Gacy's artwork didn't start selling until AFTER he was executed on death row. Sounds like the right business model for George Zimmerman too.

Nobody's paying $100,000 for that painting. It's like the time somebody bid $1 million for Manny Ramirez's gas grill on ebay. It's not a real bid...just a goof.

Art prices are a scam.

Snobs pay a million for a canvas with a dot in the middle just because of the name behind the dot. A small tin can with feces is more expensive than gold.

You idiotic morons made George Zimmerman a celebrity.

Now he paints a piece of cardboard and somebody is willing to pay a fortune for it.

Own it, suckers!!

It is stolen from a copywriter photo & manipulated, You know, that time he killed an unarmed black teenager and got off claiming self-defense. Oh, God, and now someone out there is apparently willing to pay $100,00 for his new little hobby. If anything, this works strongest message, unintentional of course, is just how horrible this world is, Good Lord. And, if the buyer does not know about the plagiarism before the end of the auction, expect a law suit afterwards. So, he's a plagiarist, besides being a murderer

If you look close, there are no brush-strokes. You can have this done at Costco or walmart .that ASSHOLE always get away. You'd be surprised some of the copyright suits that have been filed and won, on images that are much, much less alike than his. He is in violation of the copyright on this, no doubt about it Seeing as Shutterstock’s images are copyrighted and are not free to use, things could potentially become legally complicated if Zimmerman

Hope is true. He deserves it, and more too, for all the evil the media has done to him.

note* if you don't pay your bid, you lose your account, and can be permanently banned by last name, address, bank account and SSN making it almost impossible to ever use again... if high enough of an amount prosecution is also part of your agreed bid and contract

You people are stupid. No one is actually paying that much for this. They are probably all fake bids meant to drive up the final price. In Ebay world final price = HUGE final percentage to Ebay and no actual buyer to pay for it.

The same as most of the crap "they" sell at Art Basel for way too much money. What's the difference? Price is a construct.

George Z has literally stolen someone else's flag, distorted it, made it about color and stamped it with a pathetic, insincere pun. Yup, I think we know exactly what this guy is about. He isn't a smart or thoughtful person, and mistakes his impulsiveness for sincerity. He doesn't mind being this way, as long as he gets a few nickels in his coffee can. He has no idea how cheap or silly he seems. Art exposes everyone, even bad artists

The horror is it's probably a good investment, and that's what America truly values.

And here you are giving him free publicity. To answer your question, he couldn't pay me enough to hang that atrocity in my home.

george zimmerman assaulted a cop, twisted a women ankle at a bar, has been accused of domestic violence against his previous fiancé, stalking people, animal cruelty bullying his coworker, road rage, bullying his neighbors,  se xually molested girls, spread derogatory stereotypes about Mexicans.Pulled a gun on a UPS delivery man. Was on various prescription drugs with known, violent side. Shot  a unarmed kid in the heart. Who he was stalking and frustrated  MAD about his wife not being in their home. No wonder he had such aggression towards "these punks that always get away".. His exact words! No wonder he pursued Trayvon. looking for an altercation.Zimmerman Hid Second Passport, Lied About Money He was mad, in a bad mood from obvious personal reasons with the wife. Accused of threatening wife and father in law  as well as assaulting him, is on video trying to destroy evidence that can be used against him and so on and so forth yet. Zimmerman was involved in a situation involving domestic violence with a gun on new girlfriend. Scheibe’s daughter received a text message from George Zimmerman. Mason said that message was a still image from an intimate home video of Scheibe I guess for many people the man can do no wrong. No wonder he seems to feel like he can get away with anything, for the most part it seems like he can

I don't begin to understand it. He's not just a hypothetical loose cannon--he's already killed once. I believe he's being enabled into taking another life, because the only message he's gotten from the law or the courts is that there are no real consequences. In fact, he's in worse trouble for breaking a glass table top with a gun (presumably the handle/butt) than he was for shooting an unarmed teenage boy. A random table is worth more than a kid's life. So of course he's going to rage on, until he crosses a line in a huge way, and every bit of what's happened since that shooting is the fault of a legal system (in Florida) which has come to enable sociopaths.”

“Who is really surprised by this? He think he is above the law.

It is amazing how poorly the investigation in the Trayvon Martin Case was conducted. If Zimmerman's real background was investigated properly, these things should have been brought to light, and allowed to become evidence. There is no dought in my mind that he deliberately killed Trayvon Martin. That right the only asshole that always get always it's you george zimmerman.Zimmerman will continue to commit violent acts until someone lays down the law. He NEEDS to do some type of time ... He thinks he is invincible

Definitely not Trayvon Martin's blood.
