Diddy Being Mistaken for Kanye by Jeffrey Deitch Is the Most Art Basel Moment Ever

Categories: The Z List

Pack it in, folks. The most Art Basel Miami Beach moment of Art Basel Miami Beach has already happened. In fact, we're pretty sure that no moment before has, and no moment in the future will, really better illustrate the inanity of this insane clusterfuck of a week.

Apparently, yesterday, mega-gallerist Jeffrey Deitch went up to Diddy and greated him with, "Hi, Kanye."

According to Page Six, Deitch, the influential force behind NYC's Deitch Projects and the former head of MOCA Los Angeles, was walking around at the Convention Center yesterday when he noticed an uproar among attendants.

Someone told him that Kanye was in the building. So Deitch walked up to the back of the nearest sharp dressed black man and said, "Hi, Kanye." Turns out it was Diddy.

"There was a big crowd gathered at the entrance to an art fair booth. I asked the dealer what the commotion was about and she said, 'Kanye is here,'" wrote Deitch in an e-mail to Page Six. "I could only see the person from the back, and went over to say 'Hi Kanye'. To my great embarrassment, it turned out to be P Diddy. He thought it was very funny, especially since we had spent several hours together visiting my street art show in Los Angeles."

Hrag Vartanian, of art site HyperAllergic, overhead the exchange, and said it seemed like Diddy wasn't aware that Deitch had recently left his post in Los Angeles. At least he didn't reply with, "Hey, Larry Gagosian, how's it going?"

We mostly like the fact that Deitch is the kind of man who hears that a megastar is nearby and decides to walk right up to him and greet him without even making eye contact first.

As it turns out Kanye was not in the building. We patiently await the five minute mini-rant he's sure to go on when word gets back to him.

Meanwhile, we'll be debuting our latest performance art piece later tonight entitled, "Hi, Kanye," in various locations in Miami Beach in which we walk up to people's backs and greet them with "Hi, Kanye."

Isn't Kanye now very identifiable via Kim Kardashians ass being in close proximity and orbiting his bobble head?
