Here's Your Yearly Reminder Not to Shoot a Gun Into the Air on New Year's Eve

At this point, our favorite Miami New Year's Eve tradition is the annual public reminder to not shoot your guns off into the air when the clock strikes midnight.

Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, Police Chief Manuel Orosa, and Miami-Dade Commissioner Audrey Edmonson along with civic and religious leaders have bound together once again for the "Just Don't Fire" campaign.

"These AKs, these choppers, start to go off at midnight and I hate to see a family wake up in the morning and a little kid, their little son or daughter has been struck by a bullet," Reverend Jerome Starling told CBS Miami. "I'm begging and pleading that you will put down these guns, stop the violence and understand one mentality: what goes up will come down."

Police meanwhile are asking anyone that hears gunfire on NYE to call 911 and are reminding citizens that firing your gun into the air is a crime.

This is now the 16th year that officials have rolled out this campaign for both New Year's Eve and Fourth of July, and yet the public still doesn't get the message.

Back in Fourth of July 2012 two people were hit at the Biltmore Hotel by falling bullets. In 2010 a young boy visiting from Italy was struck by a falling bullet while dining in the Design District with his family.

As for Miami itself, I’ve lived in and/or extensively visited cities around the world. There is nothing that any of them have that we don’t. Except maybe for pride. I hear folks saying all the time how they’d love to move to X because it has Y and Z, but it’s just snobbery — no one goes to the museum more than once anyway, and you can do that there on vacation. Then come home to perfect weather year-round. Miami is a beautiful gem. Remember those NYC shirts that said “Go love your own city.”? Well…

Miami New Times, fair point regarding gun play, but the shaming seems like a pretty regular thing to me. And I’ve only been following for a few months. Even if the VV gripes, we follow their lead? Miami’s character is generally sunnier anyway, and the city sure doesn’t need unnecessary criticism from within. Obviously, it’s up to y’all, but as I scan your headlines I’ve thought to myself, “This person isn’t from here."

New times you have been coming off as anti miami lately with these lame shame attempts. The city needs a positive not "Miami should be embarrassed" bullshit.

Shooting guns on NYE is a Mexican thing, here in LA. We are a city if such endearing traditions, you know.

Martin, PEOPLE kill people, using more than just guns. Get real.

Allan, if our shaming prevents one idiot from shooting their gun into the air, who cares? Also, you don't really read the Village Voice (our sister paper) if you think that statement is true.

Yeah, let's face it: shaming is what Miami needs sometimes. More often than we'd like to think.

When I lived in Los Angeles the problem was so bad they cut off ammo sales a week before to reduce NYE injuries from celebratory gunfire. Surprisingly (or not) there are a lot of stupider cities than Miami.

Allan Baldwin, do you realize people are stupid and need to be reminded from the smarter ones within the tri-county area not be be stupid?

Miami New Times, do you guys realize that you take the shaming tack often? Do you not actually like Miami? The city and the state get enough ridicule from others. Shouldn’t the entertainment guide of record lift us up instead? Imagine if the Village Voice lead with these kinds of headlines. Places like NYC have the reputation they do in part because they are self-congratulating. Show some love, yo.

I guess people forgot their Physics.

Unless you shoot Directly 90 degrees perpendicular to the ground(A near impossibility) any actual bullet shot skywards will fall back down no faster than a pebble of the same weight.

If shot exactly 90 degrees with will reach the Terminal velocity of Approximately 300 Feet per Second or less than the muzzle velocity of a BB from a Daisy Red Rider of a Christmas Story fame.  It ain't gonna kill anyone.

The injuries by Bullets during these celebrations are by careless, drunk, Idiots who shoot off their guns any which direction.

@Anthonyvop1 great! now give these idiots detailed instructions on how to shoot up in the air! I guess people forgot their common sense.

@Anthonyvop1 @BB007 Anthonyvop1 I think you make a very good point regarding the speed of a falling bullet, but I would disagree with one thing: a bullet short directly 90 degrees straight up is the only one that WILL probably fall at a bullet's terminal velocity, as any other angled shot would include angular velocity (I think you just mis-typed that sentence). But even though you make a great point that a bullet shot straight up in the air probably could never be lethal, I also agree that as a policy, all celebratory gunfire ought to be discouraged.
