Marco Rubio Signs Up for Obamacare: Can You Say Hypocrite?

How do you spell hypocrite?

Republican Florida Senator Marco Rubio and his family have signed up for Obamacare, the Tampa Bay Times is reporting. He is also accepting a federal subsidy to pay 75 percent of his health care -- under the provisions of a bill that some Republicans wanted to kill..

This comes, despite the fact that our own Tea Party-lite Senator has been among the most outspoken critics of the bill and has tried to kill it on numerous occasions. According to almost everybody, he has also misrepresented what it really means again and again in crude scare tactics.

Here 's what he told Fox News in July,

Under Obamacare, people who "have a doctor they've been seeing for the last 15 or 20 years, they won't be able to keep going to that doctor."

Politifact Florida rated this mostly false.

Here is another whopper.

"Obamacare is bad policy that adds around $800 billion of taxes on the American people. It does not discriminate between rich and poor. It hurts everyone."

Politifact rated this one completely false:

And here he joined whack-job Senator Ted Cruz from Texas in trying to kill Obamacare by tying it to an ill-fated budget deal.

"This short-term budget is especially damaging because it wastes money on ObamaCare, a law that is costing many hard-working people their hours at work, their jobs and their existing health coverage," Rubio said in a statement to the media."

Finally, here is what he wrote in the Wall Street Journal just last month about his attempt to repeal an Obamacare provision that would prevent insurers from being reimbursed. It was a submarine law-killer:

"When Obamacare was debated... none of its proponents, including the president, told the American people that the law granted the federal government the authority to bail out insurance companies at the expense of taxpayers. But now their dirty little secret is out,"

Marco, I hope you don't get sick from all this prevarication. Who knows what will happen to you under Obamacare?

I don't like Marco but I feel bad for him that he has to put with a failed program which he didn't even vote for.

Now that the hypocrite has enrolled himself and his family in one of the exchanges AND is benefiting from a subsidy, unlike some of the other Republican lawmakers who rejected the subsidies out of principle, will Rubio continue on with his "poison pill" bill to repeal the Risk Corridor provision of Obamacare with the hopes of causing major price increases? ;)

The real question is… HAVE THE POLITICIANS WHO CREATED THIS BILL SIGNED UP FOR IT? Last I heard they exempted themselves and their rich cronies. Not at all fair.

How could he get a 75% subsidy? He must have lied about his income. He has to have claimed under $40k a year. Really?

Voters who elected him believed every lie he said because the Tea Party was smart to use the title of Republican to get elected.  Well first Rubio had the Dream Act but changed to run with Romney on Self Deportation.  Accepting his fellow Party calling him and other minorities wet back/low IQ.  Now he is told to make sure people don't sign up and save with Obamacare.  Speaker Boehner announced all the Republican/Tea Party lawmakers have signed up for Obamacare but are sticking to their push to assure their supporters and those who hate Obama don't sign into the Plan.  Conservative Republicans had already signed on.  Even State Governors who refused the plan for their States have signed up for their families.  Marco knows people will follow what he tells them to do and Don't sign up for Obamacare.

Hope this article is backed up with good research and journalism and correct me of I'm wrong but under Obamacare you do not qualify if you have health coverage through your employer. He works for the government they have health insurance plans...

the politicians are too dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it -- that that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. (They vote on their own raises, healthcare, and pension plans, and we are left with the bill. ,Members of Congress sleeping in the office are thus playing on the edge to eek out even more compensation from the taxpayer. They convert use of a space -- that we have paid for -- intended for work into living space as they avoid rent) AS we know, the money hungry Congress men and women have taken millions from the Koch, et.al., and that really is what drives their positions, not the interests of the American people. That makes them low-life indeed

Rubio is against the ACA but signed up for it. Paul Ryan is against Social Security but it paid his college tuition and lifestyle. Can these folks be any more hypocritical? The Republicans rail against government funded healthcare, whilst they enjoy their government funded healthcare. How can all these Repubs that are getting covered under the ACA , come out and tell others not to. But still okay with Republicans telling young people to not sign up for it and take the chance of being uninisured!!! The fact that the 2016 frontrunners are signing up for Obamacare is quite telling. They can all afford insurance off the exchange but they know that Obamacare will be popular and they can use their early embrace of it to their advantage in the next general election.

I slightly disagree with this. First fact, ALL insurance companies, how they operate, what is covered etc has been changed by this law.

Second, as long as he is a Senator he is COVERED(or offered ones to choose from) by the policies that are afforded to ALL federal employees as part of his compensation package. (Just like anyone else who has insurance at work) Some of his family may be on that policy, others may NOT. TRUST ME, he didn't go through the "healthcare" exchange permitted, on the Computer that is available to most Floridians. I say this, because OUR sucky Governor (Scott) has done ALL he can do to block expansion of Medicaid in Florida (with federal $ helping) ALL people Filing incone tax returns will be REQUIRED to account for their policy! Each will then recieve tax credits this year if everyone on policy is covered this year..this will continue as a credit (takes away taxes you owe) Eventually (sorry not sure when) ADDING to what you owe (I think year 3) if you DONT have coverage!

The company offering the policy might have given Sen. Marco "the Thirsty" Rubio a sweetheart deal...

I'm the end if you want to fix health care because we all know it's a mess to begin with and this law is only going to make it worse.... These are 2 simple things our government officials in DC can do to make it much better.... 1) Tort Reform 2) Allow health insurance companies to compete across state lines

Noel Emmanuelli
Noel Emmanuelli

Hmm, technically you do get "taxed" regardless of owning a vehicle or choosing public transportation ....you pay state and municipal taxes (which pays for public transportation, bike paths, walking paths, etc.) either way you're paying for it some way, some how....and this whole thing about him being honorable....hmm the honorable thing would be to stand by your convictions....in the words of Tony Montana "All I have in this world is my balls and my word and I don't break them for no one." Looks like Rubio has neither....

I'm not too sure Rubio has THAT much money to spare. Doesn't he still owe his Law School debt from his time at UM?

Probably signed up just to prove how fudged up it is. He will be better able to say just how crappy it is by experiencing it first hand .

Steven Mačečević

Mario it's honorable imo. If you think that's silly that's your problem lol . I suppose you feel that Harry Reed and staff asking for exemption from Obamacare is ok? And of course people are going to do what's best for their family. Who won't but I think Rubio has enough $ to do pretty much whatever he wants . I don't think he signed up for Obamacare to save a few bucks lol

Clarence Bolanos

I love hearing the car insurance analogy...... Yes if we own a car we are to own insurance.... But some people don't own cars because they don't want to. They ride their bikes or walk or taxi or even ride the bus. They aren't penalized for it either. Now if an individual has had a plan that was cancelled due to Obamacare and they don't enroll they get penalized with a tax.... So comparing car insurance to health insurance is apples to oranges.

Mario Francisco Garcia
Mario Francisco Garcia

Rubio is offered an insurance package. There is NO NEED for him to enroll in the exchange. He shopped around in the exchange for a better option and found one. Rubio wouldn't enroll in Obamacare if it provided worse options for his family because of "HONOR" or whatever, that's just silly. He wants what's best for his family and for him. We all do.:)

Noel Emmanuelli
Noel Emmanuelli

Hmm do any of you guys defending Rubio do any research at all. First off the ACA doesn't force you to sign up, it forces you to have health care coverage...whether you choose to pick a private option or sign up with the ACA to view multiple options is up to you (think of car insurance, doesn't matter whether its Geico, State Farm, etc, but you have to have it.) As a government employee he already had health care coverage and didn't need to sign up for the Affordable Care Act...this is why he is a hypocrite...Hypocrite - a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs...he slammed and railed against it but here he is taking advantage of it....

Clarence Bolanos
Clarence Bolanos

Why should government employees be exempted to begin with? That should be a bigger question to ask.... They are no different than the normal individual that has to follow the law.

Rick Hernandez
Rick Hernandez

Will the misinformed please stop crying about Harry Reid and his staff, and congress, and unions, and blah blah about being exempt. If you already have health insurance you are exempt. PERIOD.... Obamacare is private insurance you buy on the open market. They probably already like what they already have. So of course congress and staff is exempt. They already have health insurance!

Phil Ramirez
Phil Ramirez

not everyone is required to sign up... If you're a union member or a government employee (City, State, Federal), you're exempt.

Phil Ramirez
Phil Ramirez

no, he's a hypocrite because he's a Miami Republican, who happens to be a Hialean...

Steven Mačečević
Steven Mačečević

Mario a lot of Senators and Congress folks who don't agree with Obamacare still signed up because they feel that if the rest of American is required to do so they should have any special exception. I believe this is HONORABLE. Of course reed and his staff run from what they created which i feel is cowardly. But to each their own.

Alain D. Mozas
Alain D. Mozas

Most of the GOP senators are signing up and not taking the 75% federal bonus (instead signing up via their own state exchange) so this is ironic considering the stand he took/is taking against Obamacare. Everyone knows it is a law pointing that out is redundant LOL.

Mario Francisco Garcia
Mario Francisco Garcia

They don't "need to" sign up for anything because they are already given other options. Rubio decided that Obamacare was his best option :).

Steve Klare
Steve Klare

Are you schilling for Barry and the gang. They all need to sign up for this royal piece of crap....What is good for the Goose is certainly good for the gander. Now if Harry the " Moron " Reid and Barry O would sign up for it..

Mario Francisco Garcia
Mario Francisco Garcia

Wait, he doesn't get an insurance package as a Senator? Why does he even have to sign up to begin with?

Ace Greene
Ace Greene

Why do they keep saying "sign up for Obamacare" as if it were an insurance policy? It's just a market that is forced to play fairly.

Steven Mačečević

This proves how misinformed and foolish libs are. No idea what is going on, yet trying to stir the pot.

Steven Mačečević

Hey Miami New Times not sure if you are aware but Obama care is the LAW. Marco Rubio is obeying the law. Everyone is required to sign up.

Clarence Bolanos

But the new times won't report that Harry Reid exempted a good portion from his staff from having to enroll in Obamacare......
