Ten Differences Between Miamians and New Yorkers

Categories: Listicles

We survived the New York invasion that is Art Basel, but make no mistake: New Yorkers are still very much among us and will be for the rest of the season. While both cities may be noted for their diverse makeup, rudeness, and cosmopolitan flair, we still can't help but view New Yorkers as something of a strange breed very different from ourselves.

Oh sure, this list of ten differences between Miamians and New Yorkers relies a bit too heavily on stereotypes of the jet-setting type of New Yorker who flies here for Basel and New Year's Eve. But considering most New Yorkers are convinced the only part of Miami is South Beach, we don't feel too bad about it.

New Yorkers judge a party by the guest list. Miamians judge a party by how fun it is.
New Yorkers like to pretend they're unphased by celebs and other boldfaced notables, but read just about any party or nightlife report in New York City and you'll find a list of the VIP in attendance high up in the story. Miamians, meanwhile, seem to get more excited about elements of a party that would play into their own personal pleasure. Namely, free booze, dancing, and a concentration of good-looking people they might actually have a shot with.

Let's put it this way: New Yorkers would go to a letter opening if it were hosted by Anna Wintour, Lena Dunham, and Jay Z. Miamians would go to a letter opening if there were a good DJ and an open bar.

New Yorkers Can't Dance
Poor New Yorkers. It's not totally their fault. Mayor Rudi Giuliani's dumbest legacy is his no-dancing law that literally prohibits more than three people dancing at any given time in a bar or nightclub without the proper license. Have you seen New Yorkers try to cut it at a Miami party? It's all finger-pointing and awkward side steps. Miamians, meanwhile, pretty much take the opportunity to dance just about anywhere, and no one can stop them.

New Yorkers are afraid of color in the wardrobe. Miamians certainly aren't.
Here's what happens when you Google "New York Style":

newyorkstlye.jpg
So bland! So neutral!

Here's what happens when you Google Image search "Miami style." (With the embracing caveat that we had to filter out searches involving the Kardashians. Damn it, gossip blogs!)

miamistyle.jpg
Wow! Much color! Such patterns!

Miamians can't drive well. New Yorkers just can't drive.
A word of warning to anyone from lesser cities: Never get into a car with either a Miamian or a New Yorker, but for two different reasons. Most Miamians drive every damn day -- in Miami -- which has left them soulless monsters behind the wheel, ready to cut off anyone and lurch across three lanes of traffic without so much as a nod, much less a blinker. New Yorkers, on the other hand, never drive. They just kind of sit behind the wheel while blabbering about the subway and how they haven't had a car since they graduated from Sarah Lawrence.

New Yorkers care who their neighbors are. Miamians know better than to ask.
The most notorious facet of high-end New York real estate are the co-op boards. Before you move into a fancy condo building, you have to sit before your potential neighbors and answer all sorts of crazy questions about your life and personal finances. Miamians, conversely, know better than to do that. If you buy a luxury condo in Miami, you take on the very real risk that you'll be living next door to a porn mogul, drug kingpin, or Russian mobster. Ignorance is bliss.

There are so many NY "transplants" in Miami they're considering changing the name to NY-SOUTH because South Bronx was taken

New Yorkers also don't give a shit what Miamians think of them.

I, once, liked New Times for the "NEW TIMES" we were living in and experiencing...This article is obviously written by a recently turned 22 year old who hasn't even BEGUN to live the "life" of what being a Miamian is...All they know is clubs and fast cars because this article is basically catered to the material and nightlife...Dancing? Lists? Drugs? Neutral Colors? I bet you like to fist pump your favorite dubstep song in a midtown bar because you're too original to dance it like a hipster....I'm sorry, but is this under the "COMEDY" section of the paper or the "LETTERS TO THE EDITOR"... I mean, a middle school student could write an article on why they love XBOX versus Play Station best and THAT would be more entertaining and insightful...Keep practicing your Miamian lol no, for real...

Alonso Aliaguilla I read this earlier today. Pretty crappy. Also humorous how much Miami likes to compare itself to NY. The dancing is the only accurate thing. New Yorkers can drive. It's much harder to drive in this mess with old ladies hauling shopping carts full of recycled goods than the splendor of a beautifully paved four lane highway. Oh and Miami people not caring about whose on the guest list HAHAHAHA. i love me some 305 but this was pulling at straws.

you already put this stupid article before and new yorkers can dance and drive, first if all, people from miami cant drive ive had my arm damged cause of this and second of all, new yorkers dance in clubs. in miami its more about standing around, in new york they have dancing circles and here in miami i have never seen that...

Haaaa...funny in nyc I've never seen an article about how nyc is better than Miami. All i'm saying is that i've grown to love Miami and I'm from nyc. I lived there for 32 years. Miamians you need to chill, carve out your own identify (which you already do have) and stop making comparisons. The generalizations that were made were so asinine i cringed at the thought that someone might be paying this ass to write. I was going to write a comparison for myself and then i thought to myself why would ever write something so stupid.

If you're from New York, then why are you here?!?! If you despise Miami so much, then why are you here?!?!?! If NEW YORK is the best city in the world, then why are you in MIAMI?!?!

I am not a New Yorker. This article is the stupidest article I have ever read. What kind of crap does the New Times need to write to sell themselves. Wow! What a new low on journalism.

New Yorkers are the best, most aggressive drivers in the world. They have to be. It's just the Manhattanites that can't drive.

...........................and i have to add this: ask DIRECTIONS in NYC and most people will know precisely how to guide you........however ask directions in MIAMI and either they don't speak the language or they have no idea where you are asking about and cannot help in any fundamental way = period

i would say generally NYers are infinitely more AWARE of their surrounding than MIAMIans

i can't prove this scientifically but i see many observations based on this daily

frankd4

..........................NYC is the walking capital of the world - PEDESTRIANS RULE IN NYC = period (MIAMI is among the least pedestrian-friendly cities)

lack of PUBLIC accomodations here in MIAMI especially ways to get around quickly and cheaply means MIAMI is at a severe DISadvantage ............. being enslaved to automotive transportation (no parking, too much traffic, very expensive) is undeniably a negative and an uncorrectable deficiency

just love the comment about driving. So Wrong.

...........................otherwise NYers know "exclusive" as in the hamptons and fifth avenue penthouses AND educationally have NYU and Columbia as serious centers of learning AND international flavors from the entire globe at the UNited NAtions as well as world renown arts, hospitals etc

as for the "dancing" part i wonder if the name JUILLIARD was ever considered in taking the position that MIAMI is better - what place in MIAMI do the best dancers in the world want to attend ?

as for neghbors NYers live in CO-OPs not CONDOs and a CO-OP board rules can legally descriminate and keep OUT whomever they want including people like MADONNA and ex-pres NIXON were denied the ability and turned down their request to reside in a building = in MIAMI drug kingpins buy luxury high-rise CONDOs for all cash wired in from foreign accounts with no questions asked and would NEVER get approval of a typical NYC CO-OP board = period

(plus such drug lords would probably NOT want the scrutiny of the NYPD and are better off in MIAMI where the police department can be bought off with drug money)

...............................THE biggest DIFFERENCE actually is NYers come down here as easily as if it were the sixth borough of NYC on and live on their " Discretionary spending BUDGET " whereas MIAMIANs cannot afford to reciprocate and visit NY

therefore NYers are the richer relatives to MIAMIans poorer relatives - so the BIGGEST difference is real money

This article is the equivalent os Shit taking a SHIT!!!. This author has clearly never been to New York or at least he is trying to a cheap following by ignorant people who are easily impressed by stereotypical assumptions.

dumbest list ever, new yorkers cant dance yet most dances were made in new york, new yorkers cant dress yet the fashion world is in new york and OMFG, miami people have zero taste in fashion... new yorkers cant drive? you clearly have never been to new york and compared it to miami... they know their cars have blinkers and actually use them. new yorkers get stressed about the city life? what its all they know who the fck even thinks about that? holy shit. new yorkers do care who their neighbors are because they arent anti social rude weirdos like most miami folks....... whoever wrote this should take a trip to new york and not just make assumptions, worst list i ever read lol kill yourself please

So funny. I've met the rudest and most self centered people in Miami. I often feel like I'm living in a twilight zone where individuals here think they are the only ppl that exist. They don't even look in their car rear view mirrors b4 backing up! Lol. They just run ppl over on the road and leave em there to die. Literally. No one holds a door in public and good luck w any elevator etiquette. I've lived in both cities and new York is way cooler hands down. We love Miami but pot calling the kettle black on rudeness. Nice try author.

erinclark1979
erinclark1979

Wait...what is inaccurate about this article? Maybe the driving part. New Yorkers drive like they want to die. Miamians drive like they are dying. New Yorkers do more coke. New Yorkers stress out about being on time. New Yorkers give up, Miamians end up. New Yorkers love New York. Miamians hate Miami...mostly. Miamians dress like a candy machine threw up on them. Miamians dance more because it's okay to dance here. New Yorkers listen more because they have better shows.

...........the nice weather during the winter maybe ?

all i'm sayin is NYers who live BOTH places know the differences - MIAMIans who cannot afford NYC don't know the benefits and positives and world-class exposure to things NYC offers that MIAMI could never attract

a real NY goes many different places in addition to just MIAMI

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

.........IF someone can earn in NY and spend in MIAMI that's the ultimate situation

it is very difficult to sustain a lifestyle based on LEGAL earning here in MIAMI = period = most who flash the cash are into ILLEGAL operations and black market type incomes

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

.................and the really RICH NYers go to NAPLES or BOCA or AVENTURA or LAS OLAS because the shopping is better there AND they can accomodate their BIG SHIPs

frankd4
frankd4 topcommenter

........................the problem is Sha Almont most MIAMIans cannot AFFORD NYC so any details about NYers are purely circumstantial and stereotypical let alone dated and uninformed.....the real rich NYers don't even come to MIAMI anyway

......................THAT'S A BINGO !..........".....New Yorkers love New York. Miamians hate Miami....."
