Miami Named 4th Worst-Run City in America, Hialeah 9th

Perhaps the most surprising part of the City of Miami being named the fourth worst-run city in America is that it was higher in the rankings than Hialeah. However, both cities made the top ten.

24/7 Wall Street decided to start off the new year by ranking America's 100 biggest cities from worst to best run. "The area's economy, job market, crime level, and welfare of the population," were all taken into account.

Hialeah came in ninth with the following statistics:

> Population: 232,000 (83rd largest) > Credit rating: not rated > Violent crime per 100,000: 347 (12th lowest) > 2012 Unemployment rate: 11.7% (14th highest)

"Just 71.2% of the adult population in Hialeah had a high school diploma in 2012, one of the worst rates among large cities," writes the site, adding, "Nearly 36% of residents didn't have health insurance last year, the most among the 100 largest U.S. cities."

Miami meanwhile came in fourth with these statistics:

> Population: 413,864 (42nd largest) > Credit rating: A2, negative > Violent crime per 100,000: 1,172 (15th highest) > 2012 Unemployment rate: 10.3% (24th highest)

"Roughly one in 10 jobs in Miami is construction related, more than the vast majority of the largest U.S. cities," says the site. "Miami's poverty rate of 31% last year was roughly double the national rate."

Falling home prices and rising foreclosures were also cited for both cities.

Oddly, things like public corruption and effectiveness of municipal services don't seem to have been considered, which one would assume of a list purporting to decide how well-run a city is. Many of factors that bring Miami and Hialeah down are at least in part beyond total local control.

In case you're wondering, San Bernardino, California, was named the worst run city. Irvine, California, took the honors as America's best run city.

..........................wouldn't the worst run be DETROIT ?

as for the statistics the numbers can be taken in a variety of ways to mean different things BUT one thing is clear - the city of MIAMI is poor and uneducated - which is no surprise because the main interests are TOURIST related and they get first priority and then come the real-estate developers who buy and large "own" the city

so as long as the visitors and guests have no SAY here (they all VOTE somewhere else) and spend their money AND as long as drug kingpins and geo-narco dealers keep buying for cash sight unseen high-rise luxury condos (they need to park their drug fortunes somewhere - right ?) , everything will stay the same

the city is actually quite well-run for tourists and property developers, in fact it caters to BOTH those groups

it's the common residents who live here year round that get short-changed

The criteria used for "best run" are bizarre at best, I would say. I actually think Miami does a fairly good job at providing half-decent government services compared to other major cities I've lived in (Los Angeles, Pittsburgh). They are definitely a lot more innovative than those other places. Perhaps corruption encourages more efficient contracting for city services as opposed to having a large staff of slothful city workers. Frankly, anyone who's lived in Los Angeles laughs at Miami traffic, which occasionally actually moves at half-decent speeds ...

The surprise is that I would think Hialeah would be 4th and Miami 9th... I'm Surprised the Feds haven't taken over yet, for as many times as the city has had been in the red..

It's so bad here that everyone wants to move here and spend their life savings going in vacation here! When someone says Miami is a horrible city I laugh as they are probably writing in a desk hidden in the basement. Or they are mad cause they couldn't get into LIv the last time they where here.

Gotta love it. Though those 'worst-run' cities lists are imperfect at best. Some of those things aren't really on the shoulders of current local government. But yeah, Miami.

...................when it comes to providing BASIC resources and support the TOP items like WATER and elementary EDUCATION and affordable HOUSING, the full-time residents do not enjoy the benefits of good leadership results here and will continue to struggle along like they do now

when it comes to TOURISTs and REAL-ESTATE developers the government is VERY responsive indeed and actively caters to theses two groups

so it's TWO TALES of ONE CITY (instead of a TALE OF TWO CITIES - get it ? ! ?)

when three quarters of the economic drivers, TOURISTs and DRUG KINGpins, WHO DO NOT VOTE here YET spend enourmous amounts of money here - there is little impact on the livability of the commoner here = period

they are so corrupted, they pay to get their name off the list, packet change money by Russian or Italian mafia, I have no doubt

.........................DRUGs, TOURISM and real-estate development are the entire non-voting contributors to the economy SO THEY are all well served here

as for the commoners living here things will always be slim pickings YET to most of them since their own home countires are so much worse than MIAMI i guess they don't see any reason to change anything here

..............................MIAMI is a nice place to VISIT but most americans wouldn't want to live here

for one the language (spanish),  and the other is the pervasive corruption of drug money and real-estate schemes infesting goverment decision-making into illegal and under-the-table transactions the norm here

however many CENTRAL and SOUTH americans have invaded simply because of those same two reasons, the language (spanish) and the corruption (otherwise legally they wouldn't be here)

white americans have long ago tended to favor BOCA (and north) and the NAPLEs / TAMPA area but those places have their problems also

don't take it personally, I came from Cuba too, except I lived most of my life in the United States, miami is not. I did lived in South Beach five miserable years, Never seen so much corruption, most crimes I witness were 11th and Collins, 11th and washington, right at front of the police department, people selling drugs, prostitutes, every miami city officials, specially Cuban Mayors, have been involved in scandals of corruptions, or their children. Most people after they come here as immigrants , join the ex-batistas in the name of hate to Castro, and like the blinds, follow a monster just as worst, cuban-american republican leaders, The Exile community. where life evolves around hate for Castro, not life in America as an american; when you do not learn the language, the laws and the way of living in this country, your local goverment, will help them self to do one thing and one thing only, take advantage or ignorance and gain as much as they can. In south beach, i met so many have been here as long as I have, couldn't even defend them self in court, people that after years, they never cross county line in to Broward , never mind drive to Savanna, Atlanta or Los Angeles, i have. I'm as proud as any cuban of my roots, but it is time, to question why, this rating of the city so beautiful and so bad at the time. as I always say; Miami is Paradise in Hell or Hell in paradise, you pick
