Willie Sams was fatally Tasered by Miami-Dade Police on Feb. 5
Six months to the day after teenager Israel "Reefa" Hernandez died when Miami Beach cops shot him with a Taser, another young man has met the same fate -- this time when Miami-Dade Police used the device.

Willie Sams was visiting family members in Liberty City on February 5 when he got into a confrontation with cops. The 21-year-old from Georgia was Tasered and died shortly thereafter, the Miami Herald reports.

Miami-Dade Police have confirmed the incident, but the Medical Examiner's office has yet to announce a cause of death.

"An encounter occurred between the officers and Mr. Sams," according to a MDPD statement. "The officers deployed an electronic control device, striking Mr. Sams. [Miami-Dade Fire Rescue] was called to the scene and Mr. Sams was transported to North Shore Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased."

Sams was from the small town of Palmetto, Georgia, and was studying to become a barber, the Herald reports.

Facebook photos show a photogenic 21-year-old who loved to give friends and family members boosted fades.

Sams is far from the first person to die after being Tasered by Miami cops.

But as New Times revealed back in 2010, authorities never admit that the massive electrical shock is actually the cause of death. Instead, medical examiners often cite a mysterious condition called "excited delirium."

Moreover, it could be months -- maybe years -- before a cause of death is announced.

Authorities have yet to release Reefa's official death report, for instance. So the mystery around Sams death in Liberty City isn't likely to be resolved any time soon.

Sams' mother, Lagayla Bennett, told the Herald that she spent more than a week in Miami trying to retrieve her son's body, and that MDPD had ignored her calls.

"To this day no one has called me to say my son passed," Bennett said. "Now I'm trying to track down his driver's license."

Its so easy to sit behind your phone or computers and speculate what you "think" happened. Willie was more on the none confrontational side of things. He was a goofy, sometimes reserved but always smiling type of person. To even hear this story and it be a friend of mines I am truly shocked. Right or wrong his parents, family and friends at least deserve answers. Call it what you want but him being a black young man in Liberty City, Florida with an incident involving the police I'm not shocked at the outcome. That alone should speak volumes!!!!! Are you truly being protected or are you actually the target at hand? Nobody but the police and Willie know what really happened so before you go making assumptions about a friend of mine who you know nothing about, just take the time to think: 1- it could happen to you, your family, or friend & 2- what would you do and how would you feel? R.I.P Willie relax and let take over your beautiful soul

Resisting arrest to police officers does not necessarily mean what the term implies.  Resisting arrest to officers can mean, me not agreeing with them, or me questioning them. IMO the officers these days have absolutely zero familiarity with the communities that they are patrolling; they have improper training; and many of them are too immature to handle the responsibilities that come with being an officer.  how many times have we seen cops pull a gun and shoot an unarmed suspect?  how many times have we seen several cops simultaneously beat unarmed suspects?  now we have taser trigger happy cops and dead people. Family needs to request all the video, audio and Tazer memory information.  Civil suit will take five years.  All the witnesses will have moved on and the city will settle.  The police unions cover up this by never completing the investigation.  They are a criminal empire.

You will never win fighting authority. There is a monumental lack of respect in today's culture. You want respect, give it 100% of the time, every time. Life is to short to die over a single incident that will pass if you just go with the flow. Stop the BS thug nonsense, being dead proves nothing.

I think the reason my generation has no respect for cops is due to the internet. Before, it was heard of but not seen cops abusing their power. Now, every few minutes a new police brutality video is up on youtube. How can we repsect them when we have so much evidence of them abusing their power. I see cops and my first intinct would be to get away as soon as possible. They don't make me feel safe and given the evidence I don't think they really are there to protect us.

We live in a police state where if you step out of line you will be punished regardless

Im not condoning the cops actions at all, but back in my day when a cop told you to do something it was "yes sir" or "yes man." Now, youth have no respect for anything except a can of kick ass. The taser is a much less lethal option than a night stick or a gun - the only other options for them. What are they supposed to do, take out their wallets and offer the guy a Benjamin?

People must learn not to have confrontations with police officers, that's what the courts are for, In court is were you argue and state your case, Not in the middle of the street in Liberty City......bad move.

Maybe cops should all carry dogs instead of Tasers.

It's because they're so fat and out of shape they can't run or chase or hold someone down without using brutal force. I thought there were health standards they had to abide by. Men and woman. It's disgusting and shows they can't even take care of themselves, let alone protect us.

It's not murder unless there is a conviction. Can't be tried for murder if there was no intentional death. Why would you even say the word "murder"? You think a cop intends to kill someone with a taser? I'm sure that when a cop uses a taser it's for no apparent reason. I dislike cops as much as the next guy but come on. Listen to yourselves.

Sadly cops get away with way too much leaving citizens with lack of respect and trust in them. Even worse is that nothing will be done until it effects the rich upper class, which will most likely never be effected. Therefor fight for your rights but be prepared to be bullied/murdered by ill trained, cowardly, heartless cops. There isn't much protecting and serving going on, protect your self!

I hate to see anyone die. But every time I hear these stories it's because the person decides they want to be all hard with the cops. All these teenagers or young men think they don't have to.listen to.cops. then they get shot, beat or arrested.. they the new papers put headlines like they are the victims.

So what kind of confrontation did he get in with police?

@kikrocksfreshkrew Why should we have to speculate what happened ? He obviously did something to get tasered, but it's lacking in the the story , as usual from a liberal rag, that is just trying to stir up racial tensions .. Look at the job it's done on you .. You have no clue what your friend did to be tasered, all you know that he was tasered by cops and he is dead .. I assume you think it was a white cop too , right ?

This story is doing what it is supposed to do, stir the pot .. Pitting whites against blacks, course we all know the reason behind this too ..

BTW, what are your thoughts on tasers now ? Should they ALL be banned ?

snazzysnooker

@anon I guess they all should go to "hood" school before being let loose into the community ,eh ?

@MiamiBeachCrack  All that trouble can be easily avoided:

--  Do not resist arrest. Let the courts decide.  --

It's the law. Resist arrest, the officer has the right to force you into compliance.

Yes, but they will be the FIRST people you call when your house is robbed, or your purse snatched .. Hypocrite much ?

snazzysnooker
snazzysnooker

Course, it would be nice to know what happened, no ? I mean, you don't find it funny, that it wasn't in the story, what the kid did to get tasered in the first place ?

" It's because they're so fat and out of shape they can't run or chase or hold someone down without using brutal force"

If that is the case genius, then how do the cops get a hold of the suspects in the first place to use "brutal force" ? You really don't think things through, before you just spout off what's on your pea brain, do you ?

snazzysnooker
snazzysnooker

Why do you dislike cops ? Funny, they will be the first people you will call if you got hit by a car, or your wallet was robbed though , right ?

I love all you hypocrite morons .. You never think before you speak, which gives me something to laugh at. . Thanks ..

Why would you even say the word "murder"?

-----------------    ------------------   ------------------   -----------------

Because they are ignorant.

In their imaginary world, the law is whatever they want it to be, and words mean what they want them to mean.

Exiliado

Obey the law.

Resisting arrest is against the law.

If you have an encounter with a corrupt officer do your best to expose him/her, but if you resist arrest you are implicitly giving the officer the right to use adequate force to get you in compliance.

That's the law.

Don't like it?

Write to the legislators that represent you, but good luck with that. Do you even know who represents you?

@HarryTheHandyman  It's not clear. We have requested the police report but MDPD has yet to release them to us because "the case is still open."

snazzysnooker

@MikeMillerMiami @HarryTheHandymanThen why write the story in the first place ? You are just stirring up hatred for cops and racial tensions .. Are you proud of you achievement ?

Why not get facts before you write a one sided story ?
