Dr. Alexis Martinez, Regional Schools Superintendent, Arrested After Mysterious Shooting

Categories: Crime, Education

The man in charge of administering the southern region of Miami-Dade schools has been temporarily reassigned following an arrest after a bizarre shooting earlier this month.

On February 7, Dr. Alexis Martinez was involved in an incident at a home on SW 94th Place. Neighbors tell CBS 4 that they heard a gunshot followed by a woman's screams.

Police believe the .40-caliber handgun was shot accidentally. In fact, Martinez was not arrested for the shooting. Rather, he was taken into custody for his bizarre behavior toward police.

When officers arrived, Martinez confronted them despite warnings not to do so. He told officers that although he didn't own the gun, he had hidden it in the house but simply forgot where he put it. Because, hey, who doesn't remember where they put that gun that just went off?

This forgetful man, mind you, is in charge of the single largest region of Miami-Dade schools. He has oversight over 99 schools and more than 100,000 students.

Martinez refused to give police information as to where the firearm might be and allegedly disobeyed orders to keep his hands in his pockets. Eventually, the gun was found underneath a couch cushion like it was pocket change.

Martinez faces charges of tampering with evidence -- a felony -- and a misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer without violence.

He self-reported the arrest to the school board and has been temporarily reassigned pending the results of an inquiry.

Its sad how ignorant some of you people (mostly the writer) really are. While you all clamor around the idea that someone after being shot at can possibly forget about where they may have hide the gun of the person that tried to shoot them....If you read the story you notice that the person who discharged the firearm was not reported as arrested for discharging a firearm in lieu of the public (A Big No No in Florida, Remember 10, 20, Life ) or even arrested it seems from this article (it doesn’t say 10, 20, Life except if you shoot at someone by accident). I know that personally If I had gotten shot at (accidentally or not) by a 40 caliber I’d be pretty shaken up when cops arrived to question me. So understandably a "Rational Person" would be shaken up if they got shot at, and of course it would make people scream because sudden gunfire tends to do that.

Now the bigger problem as I see it is why was the person that got shot at arrested and the person who did the shooting not arrested. Because from the story it seems that the Martinez guy lived there and the other person didn’t because The Martinez guy hide the gun from the assailant in the house. Additionally why would a police officer charge the victim with tampering with evidence of a crime and not arrest the person who committed the crime thus creating the crime which he would technically be charged for tampering with. It seems to me that the police officer arrested a person for tamper with evidence of a crime that given the facts from the article the Martinez guy didn’t commit.

Maybe the writer should spend sometime researching stories before he tries to beat the news teams to a story. Honestly, I’d like to see what ends up happening with this story. The fact this it was an MDCPS employee is apparently the only reason this deeply dedicated writer decided to write this article. Truly great work dodo. Great journalism there, I see your ready to post articles in a middle school paper, under gossip.

Domestic Violence! I hope the woman speaks out! Some men want to repress woman...SORRY GUY, THIS WILL TEACH YOU AND THE REST OF YOUR MACHO FRIENDS THAT WOMAN ARE WORTH A LOT MORE THAN WHAT YOU THINK!!!

Investigate further to find out the mistress works under him. Poor decision all around and favoritism. People with high titles and power think they are untouchable. Further review of all his direct appointments of young Hispanic women would be interesting. Favoritism towards friends and abuse of power in decisions that impact staff, students and community! Can't wait for a real detail follow-up story, or will this too be covered up and swept under the rug?

Funny seeing you here, old principal. Really puts your tag line at pep rallies ("Always remember, Go Cavs!") in new perspective.

This demonstrates that Dr. Alexis Martinez cannot be trusted to make wise decisions.

Ordered to keep hands in pockets?  Seriously?

The "Found" the gun?  Was there a warrant?

I am no fan of the cronyism and bureaucracy of the MDCPS but this stinks of more Police Fascism.

How would you feel about cops ordering you around when no crime was committed? I'd sure would not be happy.

@patria  where does it say this is domestic violence?.. no where, read thoroughly next time then comment. She could have simply screamed because.. I don't know, a gun went off?

@gfmiamichick  Thank you for writing the truth. Some administrators think they are untouchable, like you have stated. I guess he thought he was above the law and forgot he was not at work!!!

@Anthonyvop1  were you there to asses the situation? you don't even know if the guy gave consent. Fires were heard coming from the house, the police has to search for injured people, and what not; have you heard of probable cause or exigent circumstances ?

learn the law.

It's a crime scene. No warrant needed

@Funk764 A Nosy neighbor claiming she heard a Gunshot is not a Crime scene.

Even if it was they need a warrant unless they are under the belief that crime is actually taking place. And that was not the case.

This is another case of massive police overreach.
