NFL Report: Incognito and Two Teammates "Engaged in Pattern of Harassment" Against Martin and Others

Categories: Sports

The NFL has released the independent report into the Dolphins' locker room climate conducted independently by attorney Ted Wells, and it doesn't look good for Richie Incognito ...or, surprisingly, two of his teammates.

In addition to concluding that Richie Incognito "engaged in a pattern of harassment" of not only Jonathan Martin but also an assistant trainer and another offensive lineman (neither of which are named), Wells also concluded that center Mike Pouncey and guard John Jerry were also involved in the harassment. Though, those players tended to "follow Incognito's lead."

However, the report also faults the Dolphins organization for not enforcing or clearly explaining their own team rules against locker room harassment.

You can read the report in full here.

"The Report concludes that three starters on the Dolphins offensive line, Richie Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey, engaged in a pattern of harassment directed at not only Jonathan Martin, but also another young Dolphins offensive lineman and an assistant trainer," said Wells in a release. "The Report finds that the assistant trainer repeatedly was the object of racial slurs and other racially derogatory language; that the other offensive lineman was subjected to homophobic name-calling and improper physical touching; and that Martin was taunted on a persistent basis with sexually explicit remarks about his sister and his mother and at times ridiculed with racial insults and other offensive comments."

Here's a selection of the insults that were hurled Maritn's way about his sister:

  • We are going to run train on your sister. She loves me. I'm going to fuck her without a condom and cum in her cunt.
  • Hey, Jmart's sister is in town. Get the plastic sheets ready, she's a squirter.
  • I'm going to bang the shit out of her and spit on her and treat her like shit.
  • Hear your sister has a wolf-puss. A fat, hairy pussy.
  • I flew jmarts sister into Indy. My dick is dry and needs some of her healing squirt juices.

Martin claimed that when he got the infamous "half-n*gger piece of sh*t" text message from Incognito during the offseason he was particularly distressed because Incognito had never used a racial slur before, and that it signaled the harassment he received during his rookie season would continue into his second year with the team.

After that text, Incognito continued to refer to Martin as "liberal mulatto bitch," "stinky Pakistani," "shine box" and "darkness" in person. Conversely, Jerry and Pouncey would also taunt the mixed-raced Martin for not being "black enough."

"People call me a Nigger to my face. Happened 2 days ago," Martin wrote to his father at one point. "And I laughed it off. Because I am too nice of a person. They say terrible things about my sister. I don't do anything. I suppose it's white private school conditioning, turning the other cheek."

The report also concludes that Incognito also regularly threw homophobic insults at another "quiet and unassuming" offensive linemen, though the player is not believed to be gay.

Incognito reportedly accused him of 'sucking dick' and 'pissing while sitting down' and asked him 'where's your boyfriend?'" reads the report.

Dolphins' Offensive Line Coach Jim Turner was also accused of taking part, in at least one instance, of the homophobic taunting of the player. Turner gave all player gift bags over the 2012 holiday season with female blow up dolls. The harassed player however received a male blowup doll in his.

Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey also targeted a Japanese-born assistant trainer. They called him "Jap," "Chinaman," "Dirty Communist," "North Korean," and "Chink."

Though, the report also blames the Dolphins organization for some of the problems.

"It appears that the Dolphins' rules of workplace behavior were not fully appreciated and, with respect to at least some of their actions, Incognito and his teammates may not have been clearly notified that they were crossing lines that would be enforced by the team with serious sanctions," reads the report.

Wells suggests that the NFL needs to enact a stronger set of rules and policies related to locker room harassment.

The report states that Incognito and his compatriots never intended to drive Martin from the team, but also finds that Martin did not embellish or makeup any claims of harassment.

The report hopes that Martin continues his career in the league, stating "it would be unfortunate if he did not get the chance to resume playing in an environment that will permit him to reach his full potential as a professional athlete."

Update: Richie Incognito's lawyer, Mark Schamel, sent a statement disputing Wells' findings:

"Mr. Wells' NFL report is replete with errors. The facts do not support a conclusion that Jonathan Martin's mental health, drug use, or on field performance issues were related to the treatment by his teammates. It is disappointing that Mr. Wells would have gotten it so wrong, but not surprising. The truth, as reported by the Dolphins players and as shown by the evidence, is that Jonathan Martin was never bullied by Richie Incognito or any member of the Dolphins Offensive line. We are analyzing the entire report and will release a thorough analysis as soon as it is ready."

This is why we lose games and couldn't run or pass block. Glad these idiots are gone. Time to move forward.

The NFL has their heads up their ass and refuses to accept that Martin was never a real man. So the real question is, what do we do to teach our kids to stand up for themselves? Too late I guess for some. Grow some b@lls Martin. Nothing worst than seeing a 300+lbs man crying about being bullied.

The NFL is a very elite group of players and competition amongst these guys to be the best doesn't stay very nice even for teammates. These guys never know when they are traded or move on. So now we are going to expect our modern day gladiators to beat out the competition and be nice doing it ? Incognito may be viwed as a barbarian but he's no Bill Romanowski or Conrad Dobler or Dan Dierdorf. He reminds me more of Kyle Turley ? Martin, well he's not cut out to be an all pro, simply not mentally tough enough. His skill set for a 312 lb NFL lineman were questionable as well ? He didn't make anyone forget Jake Long ? Near the bottom of the starters statistically, he made it to late October before being replaced and ultimately leaving the Dolphins. I think you don't do your job very well and that's a bigger reason the rest of the bunch attacks you. In some work environments/offices even this happens, whether it's proper for white collar work is one thing, but the NFL, I doubt Martin anchors his side of the line, that anyone says or does anything to him beyond admire him in awe. But give up sack after sack, just the post game scrutiny by the media will make his life miserable. Wonder when that is coming in the NFL, that the media has to be nice too, when the team underachieves ?
